Default New Corsair - My first all-scratch build

This has been my project for the last month or so. Until now all my planes were conversions from chuckers. This time I used Elmers board and made my own wings and fuse.

Here's a link to the build pictures, as well as more finished pics. Enjoy!

Fantastic craftsmanship there. That would be fantastic from a kit, but scratch built...

Looks really good Phil. You did a great job finishing the foam.

Thanks guys.

"Is the fuselage material chunks of packing foam glued together?"

That's how the fuse started out. Once I had the correct shape, I glued a sheet of Elmers foam board around it. Then much of the packing foam was hollowed out.

Wow, I looked at your build pics. You could never tell what this plane looked like before you started. Very nice.

Very nice. Is that cloth tape you have on the elevator and rudder? You did this in a month?! What did you use to seal the foam before painting? Yes I am full of questions, but I have a scratch build project of my own I am working on and one behind that as well.

P.S. You should get your pilot out of the bathroom and into the cockpit.

Thanks guys!

That's Ultracote on the rudder, elevator, and aileron hinges. It works best if you needle-and-thread a few stitches along the hinge line to hold the upper and lower hinge pieces together.

After spackling/sanding the blemishes (I can see) from the raw foam, I like to spray color over it. The solid color lets you see every little dent and bump you missed before, and the color is easy to sand so those can be fixed easily. Clear water-based polyurethane (I used gloss) goes on last to protect the paint. It also will make the color a little darker so plan ahead.

I started this build on April 21st, so 5 weeks is more accurate.

Thanks Phil. That's great information I can use (I am already using water-based polyurethane)!

Yes. I think I noticed that! Do you have one that you fly?
