Default What Does R/C Stand For?

I've heard it both way many times.

R/C = Radio Control or Remote Control

So which is it? And can you provide proof?

Thanks,

Frank

Radio control.

Remote control are those little toy cars that are tethered to the controller by a cable.

Or what you use to change the channels on the tv:p

Default R/C?

Hi Frank,
I believe R/C in the modeling context stands for "Radio Control".
"Remote" can be any type of device that is actuated by a controller in a different location. For example an undersea search vehicle using a cable-transmitted control system is an "RV" or Remote Vehicle. A camera (or flash unit) triggered by an infared light beam is a remote control device. Even the "Clapper" is a remote-controled device, using sound as the signal.
So, our models are also remote control devices, using radio signals for the control.
JMO,
Ron

As mentioned by others, the acronym "R/C" (or "RC"), when used in the context of the aircraft upon which this site focuses, most often refers to "Radio Control" due to the most common nature of the control systems used. However, there are exceptions, such as my Air Hogs AeroSoar indoor flier, in which case the "RC" would instead stand for "Remote Control", as it uses an infrared-based control system.

To clarify, "Radio Control" is a subset of "Remote Control". Therefore, a "radio controlled" device is always potentially "remote controlled", but a "remote controlled" device is not always "radio controlled".

(I say "potentially" because you could technically be inside a device such as a plane or automobile that you are controlling via radio control, in which case that would not actually be "remote" control.)

R/C; Really Confusing, Rarely Consistent, on and on. Early on we used to say "Radio? yes. Control? sometimes..."

Well, I'm an idiot because I voted "remote controlled". Ya know what, who cares, go fly something already.

I like this poll Frank, it gets you thinking. Good job friend.

I think originally it meant radio control but with infra red and others it should now mean remote control. Not that I give a damn about it. Think I might go find the remote control and watch some TV.

Reed switches that were operated via Radio signal to effect Control of a specific surface.

Just my $0.02 worth.

From the start, when the pioneers such as Chet Lanzo, the Good brothers, and other hall of famers were developing it, R/C meant Radio Control. That is, control of a model or full size aircraft through a radio link to operate control surfaces.

I first heard the term 'remote control' applied to our R/C plane by kids who didn't really know much about what was going on.

Remote control, as far as I'm concerned, goes back to any kind of control system, mostly tethered, sometimes IR or sound, where the operator is removed from direct contact with any sort of device. So, R/C, radio control, is a type of remote control. In the late 40s or early 50s, Jim walker, and maybe others, actually experimented with an acoustic remote control system. Problems with weight and background noise.

Sometime in the very early 50s, Air Trails, or one of it's later incarnations, had an article and plan for a single channel plane that actually was tethered. No radio, just a long 2 wire tether, I think about 150' or 200', attaching the plane to the flyer to operate an escapement from the ground. Doable, but apparently, unlike with toy cars and trucks, not too practical.

Thus, even control line models are a kind of r/c, or remote control model.

Hope I added to any confusion.

Radio Control....but then we have the magazine formerly known as "Quiet Flyer" spelling out "remote control" every time they use the abbreviation "RC" and we have a hobby shop in the area that calls itself "Remote Control Hobbies". *sigh*

Frank, you left off one choice for the definition of R/C.

Really Costly.
