I'm a newbie to this, so be gentle. The nylon gear attached to the shaft of the motor is loose. It slides up and down on the shaft and it slips when the power is applied resulting in almost no propeller.
What is the best way to afix the gear to the shaft?

the main gear is pressed onto a spleened hub (at the end of the drive shaft). they are tough to remove and sometimes destroy the plastic main gear in the process.
an entire new gearbox is about 6 bucks. takes about 10 minutes to remove and replace.

I concur. Did you by any chance punch this plane in on its beak? I have run the gearbox with a 3550Kv inrunner and a 2700Kv inrunner for 10's of flights and never had the spur separate - I have had the front half of the fuselage separate from the wing and the tail for sure, but either yours took a mighty direct fore-aft shock, or there is a crack you just don't see.
Order yourself a gearbox and save the shell in the bag - you will need it later. Trust me on this.
