Hi gang! Newbie here and was looking around and liked what i saw. It has been years since I flew RC much less Heli's and now after playing with a 120 SR for a month I found myself buying a used assembly of Heli's. I have a 450 Pro DFC and now a 550e with a DX8 setup for each. My bad but I tried to fly the 450 right off the bat and the radio was in throttle hold (3D insanity setting) and of course I am waiting for some rotor links now. I picked the 550e V2 up yesterday and received instructions on how NOT to have the radio in 3D.
My question is, am I nuts to try and fly the 550e even knowing it is ready and stable? I am cautious and just want to hover practice....

Go online and google "RADDS Helicopter"
He has a complete tutorial system that goes from absolutely zero beginner to advanced ... in easy steps.
You can download the total lessons or one by one ...
Do it before wasting more money on parts !!
Mikeys RC also has set-up and advice for Heli's ... on Youtube.

Looking at it now... Thanks. Not total beginner but I am open to any and all information for sure. Never too much information, at least in RC world..... Lol
Wow, after watching parts of it it reminds me of bad experience i had with training gear. Not really sure but it was a hindering for me. Once I got frustrated with them and removed them I was up and hovering just fine.. maybe with more power/larger size it would be better?

Anyway, rather than spend a bunch of time regurgitating volumes of tips, here's a few links from this fourm that cover many of the same issues:

As you have stated that your'e not a newbie, then you are aware that size makes a difference in not only performance and repair-ability, but also in cost to maintain.......since your hanger is full of used heli's, I'm sure you have gone through each of them mechanically to insure reliability and proper throttle curve settings matching your model and pilot skills....!
There will be a moderate difference in the set-up learning curves related to flybar vs. FBL models.....particularly related to the TX settings, hope that awareness is applied swapping between each model.....many have made that mistake without realizing the "curves" differ especially in idle-up modes.
A few of us here can walk you through many of the specific issues you may be having.......but this site is really geared towards the more seious plankers and beginner/intermediate heli, multi-rotor types.
Welcome to a seriously "no-nonsense" forum.....!........

Look forward to saving you long term time and $$$$......

Thanks for the welcome and yes the setups are different and i am trying to get a handle on this. Old time and not up to speed on the newer remote setup menus but yes just reading and looking in this forum has helped me save $$$ so far. Just some stupid mistakes like accidentally hitting that throttle up switch while moving my fingers cost me 40 bucks... Lol
Seems previous owner was a 3D junkie and i have to deprogram or lockout the switch...
Oh and the nick, well I fly the full size rotor wings and was a name that just stuck with me through the years. It all hangs from that one piece of hardware...

Well, run ups, tail turns on the tarmac and then light on the skids using collective and small leans using cyclic. After battery two I was bunny hopping. I like the way this 550e works, max rpm then collective from there, nice.... radio is now setup right trimmed and everything is ready for tomorrows lessons. Thanks for the links. I am still vibrating and shaking just a tad, I think I am now bit hard! LOL

I find the bigger helis (500 and up) far easier to fly than the smaller (450 and less) types. Big ones just give you a lot more time to react. Take it very slowly and you should be ok.
If you can find an experienced flyer to set it up for you and help you over the initial stages of learning then that's the ideal route. It's also more fun if you find someone to fly with.
