I had a brain storm the otherday at the LHS. Joe had just put togather a new Slo-V and was trying to hawk it to me. It looked pretty cool but I already have a Slow Stick. $130 for a RTF plane seemed like a good price, but I figured I could build one somewhat cheaper and maybe COOLER.
Any way, Im thinking of names...
One idea was "POSSUMSTICK" Say that out loud a few times with a slow drawl and youll understand why I have reservations about that name.
I was also thinking of "STINKERTOY" on account of my wife saying ite airframe looked like tinkertoys.
Ive got a DWG of the layout of the "hubs" if anyone is interested.
Im quite proud of the motor mount. Its a piece of aluminum arrow shaft and it looks like a keeper. Time will tell.

Thanks guys. I got it almost done. The AUW is 21.5 oz with a 2712-12 motor, 10A esc, big ol futaba duel conversion Rx, and a 3S1P 2200 mAh pack. (I want to stay in the air for a while!) Ive got an 0804 APC prop on it now, but I'll probably go to a 0806 APC.
With 480 sq in of wing my stall should be around 13 mph and top should be around 28 or so.
So far Im planning to go sans-aileron. I ve never flown a V-tail befor, so I dont know exactly what to expect.
I set the radio up tonight. I planned to use a aileron/ rudder mix so I could steer with the right stick, but my radio (Polk) is only mixing in one V-tail servo.....So scrap that, Ill steer with left stick. I guess I just need to break down and put on the ailerons. That will give me another 96 sq in of wing too

For now Ill just leave it in the blue foam. If it works out, ill squirt some paint on it. We have had wind, rain storms and hail for the last few nights, so I havent been in a big hurry to go fly it..

I got a good maiden in tonight. I flew for about 8 min befor I decided that it was getting too dark. The wind was light and varible, about 5 mph and gusting to 10. The plane handled that pretty good. Much better than my GWS slo stick. I did notice that above 3/4 throttle, pulling back into the wind, I was getting a little flutter on the wingtips. I kind of expected a little of that, and it really wasnt too bad.
This plane is definately going to get ailerons. I just cant fly right with rudder alone.
I really like the arrowshaft motor mount. I bored the inside out with a 21/64" bit and slit it on the bandsaw and used a spring clamp to secure the motor. The arrow shaft will slip over 5/16" dowell rod with a little finesse.......bang.....a cool motor mount.
Thats all for now.

Hey Possum,
Sounds great! Nothing like seeing something fly that you pulled together yourself!
I just have one question for you, which is still not clear in my mind.
Do you LIKE the motor mount you made? I'd like to hear more about that!!

Naw you sound like me. I do something that works for once and I wanna tell my wife about it over and over again....
Congrats!!!

Heres some more pics. I used that big, nasty Futaba Rx because its the only duel conversion Rx I have on hand. This thing flies HIGH in the sky and I didnt want to have a radio glitch make my plane go bye bye.
I got a 10 min and a 15 min flight in this morning. The 10 min flight burned about 750 mAh. the pack is still charging from the 15 min flight. (edit: 15 min flight burned 1076 mAh) Im flying a 2200 mAh 3S1P pack , so I guess I could get a 25 min flight pretty safely.
15 Min is a LONG time for me to fly. For what ever reason, I get to shaking, and I also start to lose orientation. Im gonna go my red/green and yellow paint job and see if that helps any.
I think that pretty much sums it up!

Good Evening, fellow modlers,
I tried an underwing camera mount (facing down) and found it to be less satisfactory. Im going back to the looking forward mount.
I shot some color on the wings (looks like hammered shark snot), and rebuilt the tailfeathers. My full flying feathers were touchy, which I could live with. The bad problem was, the dowells kept getting broke off and the pull-pull strings lost tension as the dowells lost their "spring". With no tension on the pull-pull lines, I was getting lots of oscillations....it made for some really bad vids. I also have the c/g set a little closer to "right", so I dont have to "load" the tail. With the tail unloaded, the oscilations were even worse.
I could not find any rules of thumb for sizing V-tail feathers.....I just know that what I have now smells a little better. If the wind lays down tommorrow night, and God wills it, Ill know if these new feathers are better or worse.

I tried that once with the camera pointing down I hated it it is either facing forward, or I mount the camera under the wing pretty much up right get some good photos this way just fly diferent circuts to get what I want. I have it pointing down just a touch so I am not getting just the horizon.
Good luck with the new tail feathers and calm weather to try it out in.

I got a 24 min 24 sec flight today....WHAT A BLAST!!!!
The new tailfeathers are the ticket.
Im running a 2712-12 with a 8x4 APC prop and a 2200mAh 3S1P pack. All but about 60 seconds were under power. The pack just got done charging and I used 1484 mAh. My all up weight is 30 oz.
I should be able to get a half hour flight out of the plane on a nice calm day.

Gramps,
I got on-board vid of the whole flight. Im pretty happy with the steadiness of the picture now, but I need to modify the mount for a little more "down". Ive got it looking down at about 3 or 5 degrees now and I need to move it to about 30 degrees. I guess Im flying at about 400 feet and at that altitude Im seeing about a half mile out in front of the plane during level flight. I want some horizion, but I want to get vids of the house that can show a little detail too.
