Congrats Liquidity Good run, I am thinking I might need to get a plane like that, to get to the 100 mph , I just purchased 4- 1800mah 20c ,2 cell lipos, so I can make up 2 - 4 cell packs, Chellie

Are there any legal ramifications for flying electrics at high speed? I mean, I know there would be legal issues if you hit someone (assault & battery, etc. etc.), but what if some authority figure simply saw you flying that fast? Could you get in trouble? Would you have to be in a certain type of area, or possibly even licensed at some level?
I dont think so, Have you driven a Car over 100mph, I dont think flying a plane at 100 mph will draw any attention, the fastest I have driven is 160mph in a 69 Mopar Road Runner with a 413 police intercepter engine, 4 speed, posi, and the car got to feeling very lite, I had the speedo pegged, its a 160mph speedo, and had more pedel, but no more nerve Chellie, Hows That Lanie :p

So you're saying that because you can drive a car at 160+ mph, that no one would care if you flew a plane at 100+ mph? Not quite sure I follow your reasoning there. I'm sure if an officer and an FAA admin were sitting in the same squad car and they had a car go past them doing 160mph, and then an RC foamie flew by doing 110mph, they would obviously opt to chase the car. But what I'm not clear on is if you were flying your RC on your own property at speeds in excess of 100mph, and an FAA guy happened to notice, would he come track you down and tell you to stop?

I Think more attention would be placed on me doing 160mph, but i dont think the feds would get involved because they would not be able to catch me Chellie

besides there are nitro planes that fly over 100mph all over the country

All the more reason to have these attempts conducted under controlled circumstances!

Right--but since I'm new to RC planes, there's lots of things I still don't know. Such as, are there any restrictions on flying RC planes, electric or nitro? It's not that I would ever try flying a plane in a residential area. But the field in which I usually fly my planes is a big soccer complex. I'm not flying anything fast (30mph or so at most, by my guesstimation), but I was wondering what would happen if I was wanting to fly a larger/faster plane out there.

gzsfrk,
There are restrictions as far as the FAA and AMA are concerned. The AMA authorized speed limit is 200mph. Of course not everyone fly's at AMA sanctioned fields, but hopefully if they are flying at these speeds, they are in an isolated area if not at a club.

There are competitions for high speed hotliners (F5B) that are designed to push the airframes and pilots skills to the limit. 150 mph is a drop in the hat to these airplanes.

Ok..I got the awards worked out. If you check my profile and post information on the left, you'll see them. There is a 100, 125, 150 and 200. I am working on a way to nominate or request these awards, but think it might just be better to sticky a thread and let it be the communication focal point.

Default Speed Entry

Hey guys..

Thought I would put in my 2 cents on the speed ranges. I have found a few hurdles that most seem to run into when going for speed. 100mph is definitely the first elusive goal one I think. The next wall seems to be around 120mph After that 140mph followed by 150mph then it gets real slim because it is really tough to get past that so I think from there on it should be by 175mph and 200mph +. Reason, because in my opinion you are in another power class and those numbers are easier to reach with those type setups. I really think there should be a 160mph category for electric setups cause that is a real feat for those motors but in the interest of keeping the number of awards down I think these 5 are real speed goals according to the lipo/motor structure we run on.

100 mph
120mph
140mph
150mph
175mph
200mph+

Here is my video entry we clocked at 150.3mph..Thanks Chuck D for the great video and doppler testing.

Post the video!

Larry

P.S. We havnt talked about diving entries or verifying wind direction or making two runs back to back in opposite directions etc etc. All those pesky "contest like" requirements that might be present if we were trying to make this some sort of official thing.

Im all for keeping it loose and easy. If the dopplar run shows the speed - up wind down wind down hill or up hill - then its good enough for me

I do think maybe somene other than the pilot should provide the confirming dopplar though

Unless we all want to do it differently?

Sounds Great Mike Thank You Very much for all the Hard work that you have put in to this, There was no way before to group all the people that have gone 100 mph+, and this thread just helps to gather the Speeders and give them an Expensive Award for there accomplishment, and helps others to learn how to make a fast plane, set up, Etc. Take care & Have fun, Chellie
