Maybe I'll go get myself an rpm gauge and see what' I've been missing out on. It might be something worth looking into. It never hurts to gather more information.

That's more right than you know.

If the motor is not installed in the actual aircraft and airborne, all the data collected in the world isn't just totally inaccurate, it is scientifically meaningless noise. But more often, it is inversely related to actual, installed, airborne engine performance.

That is why in the field of aerodynamic propulsion we always derive an empirical installation error curve, per airframe and flight envelope, when characterizing thrust available. That error correction factor is often rather enormous, especially with tractor props. The reasons are fairly obvious:

- A motor on a test stand has no aircraft pulling back on it through the shaft (there is no form, parasite, and induced drag) and that reduces airborne thrust dramatically. With a tractor prop setup, the error from that alone is around 30-80%, and that varies massively depending on the prop diameter, pitch, form, cowling match, and gearing, and what parts of the aircraft are located inside the air column and out, Angle of Attack, airspeed, and the percentage contribution of induced and parasite drag to total drag at the test airspeed.

- The cowling, while it can be considered part of form drag, may truncate the different wing profiles of various types of propellers in very different ways, so the cowl has a major effect on thrust as well as on drag.

- Motor weight, battery weight, and ESC weight, all add a huge amount of induced drag. Different motors/props have very different power needs, even at the exact same thrust level, and that thrust level is achieved at very different airspeeds. The complete power system can account for as much as half the weight of the aircraft. Once again, test stand data ignores that, entirely.

Bottom line: all test stand data isn't just inaccurate, it is positively meaningless information when it comes to how well a power system will perform, when installed in a particular aircraft, in the air. And if you choose a motor based on test stand data alone, you will almost ALWAYS choose the worst performer in the air.

I do agrEe that the Exceed motors do perform as well as the e-Flite motors!! Only catch is that they don't last no where near as long. I bought a Exceed 60,110 and a 160. They held up for some time then one by one the bearings went. Since then I've been replacing the motors with E-Flite power series motors. All I can recommend is either take your micrometer and spec out bearing sizes to Bocca Bearings in Flordia. Better yet go for one of the best! E-Flite!!

Default How long?

How long did your Exceed motors last? I have a bunch of them and I've put in a ton of flights on them. I get about 6 flights each weekend and have been doing that on one motor for months. It has well over 100 flights and still going strong. My 3 big planes all have the Power 160 Exceed Monster Motor installed.

I had 2 die and replaced the bearings and replaced them with E-Flite motors. I gave the repaired ones to my dad. I still have three running and will be repairing with Bocca bearings as well. The play in the bearings is minimal but its their. the basic play in the stator is a bit more then when I first started using these. The keeper that goes on the back of the shaft just behind the x-mount now had to be readjusted due to the fact that it started to hit the x-mount. I can grab the prop adapter and pull the stator back and fourt a good amount compared to when I first bought them. Two of the motors on top of the play in the stator have a tad bit of vibration due to bearings having play-left to right-> I stoped counting how many flights I have on these planes but it would be well over 140. I would fly from sun down to sunset when im off and at the field. overall I wouldn't say their bad motors but you Cant compare the quality of bearings and prop adaptors to E-Flite or other top notch motors. It would be worth buying a micrometer and specing the sizes to Bocca and getting the porclen bearings. One other thing is that its hard to find parts for the Exceed motors if you can!! PS if you know where to get parts please let me know due to the fact that theirs a ton of broken exceed motors laying around in my club members work shops that can be repaired. Well their cheap enough to just buy another and save the time for rebuilding and just go fly.

Maybe you're right about the Exceed motors not lasting as long. I don't know. I have 4 Exceed Power 160 motors and only 1 E-flite 160 motor. That's because the E-flite motor is 2.5x the cost of the other one. Will the E-flite motor last 2.5 times as long? I don't know. I'm pushing at least 100 flights on 2 of the Exceed motors, and it will probably go all the way up to 150 or more. That means the E-flite motor will have to give me 400 flights in order to give me the same return on my money. Will that happen? Only time will tell. For $60, I'll go with the Exceed for now. Other people will opt for the E-flite for $150, and that's all fine. It's just preference.

I have several Monster motors. I don't think they are around any more. I have several Heads Up 4248-08 motors that are great, but they arn't around anymore either.

Default leadershobby.com motors

looks like hobbypartz.com replaced their monster motors with tacon ones. i've been buying my motors at leadershobby.com lately. I have 4 of the Aeolin motors running on 10S and they have been better performers than the monster motors I've had. They run at a higher temp and have a huge kv selection. And the price is the same with more selection. Just make sure you order them from the US warehouse.

They carry a 4840-06 still (firepower 40). I'm guessing about the same motor with a different kv rating?

It's not the same. The ones I have are purple. I am a fan of Heads Up but have not tried the Fire Power motors.
