Default Going from 8.4 NiMh to LiPo 7.2 or 10.6v

I need a better battery for my stock RTF HF cub, It came with a 8.4v NiMh - 600ma pack @ 87 grams or 3oz. Im sure there are better packs out there, Ive found a 8.4 - 900ma at about the same weight.
Im thinking of LiPo, they are either 7.2 or 10.6v not 8.4v so Im thinking a 7.2v LiPo may work as well with much less weight, the voltage probably drops from 8.4 to 7.2 in a hurry anyway. Question is whats best & has
anyone tried replacing a 8.4v HiMh with a LiPo pack ???

An 8.4v NiMH pack will actually give around 10.5v when fully charged, although this will quickly drop off under load.

A 2s LiPo is nominally 7.4v, but will be 8.4v when fully charged.
A 3s LiPo is nominally 11.1v, but will be 12.6 when fully charged.

As you can see, switching from a 7-cell NiMH pack to LiPo means either too much or too little voltage. My brother and I both started flying with planes that originally came with 7-cell NiMH packs - he had a Multiplex Cub, I had a Wing Dragon. We quickly switched to LiPo, settling on 1500mAH 3s packs, as they weighed about the same as the originals.
Both planes were fine with the higher voltage, although the motors would've worn out sooner. After a while, we replaced the motors with brushless setups, before they actually wore out.

Something else to bear in mind before you decide whether to go for 2s or 3s is, what will your next plane be? Choose some packs that'll fit your next plane.
