Default Zlin Z50 70 class and E-Power

So as most know - I rebuilt my Zlin and during motor testing - the prop shaft snapped when refitting prop. Its likely shaft may have cracked during the runway crash.

Anyway - I am having a devils job trying to remove the shaft - actually I cant !! Its a threaded on extension to the crankshaft and I reckon factory must have Loctite'd that baby on permanent ...

So I now see that EU warehouse of HK has Zlin in stock ... YES ! clicked to buy. I also clicked to buy new 15cc RCGF ... I swear I have not been drinking !

Right ... the new engine MAY go in the old Zlin and old engine of for repairs OR stay as spares.

The HK site reckons a 50 size Outrunner ....... 80A ESC and 5S up to 4500mAh.

So guys and dolls ... what E-power to put in her ... Please remember that I am restricted to Hobby King principally.
US dealers - most do not deal with Latvia so that's out.

I want to have good vertical and if possible on 5S with 3D as possibility.

AUW of model I have is 3.1kg in the air. She likes a 15x4 prop and the 15cc rpm range is 2000 - 9500 by the Tacho I have in her. So I need similar results.

HELP !!

You could go with the 46 or 60 Turnigy. Is the 6# weight the nitro version ? HK always has nice selection of BL motors and esc's You may want extra power for prop hanging if that's what you want to do. That's a lot of prop. Will it clear? Anyhow, you don't
need our advice to sort it out. I believe you already have the answer. HA

I know my Phienix Tucano weighs at least 6 # and I'm using a Powerup 46 with 85 amp esc on 5S or 6S. She hauls the mail!

Sorry .... 6# ... ??

The model weight is 3.2kg (7lbs) ready to fly with the 15cc up front and the 15x4 is clear of ground at level fine. The engine and gear probably runs about 1kg total ... so its a lot of weight to equal in E-power. With that lump up front - she needed no correction to achieve correct CoG.

I was thinking in terms of 14x6 or similar prop or stick with the 15x4.

Lets look at some figures ... aiming at about 950gr up front ...

G60 motor at 360gr
Battery 5S 4000 25C at 580gr
ESC will bring me to figure ...

But thrust figure on the G60 is not enough to get the girl truly vertical it seems.

Working with eCalc leaves me wondering if anything will do it !!

6# US engr. abbreviation = 6lbs

After researching, I'm really not too surprised that the G60 would not provide enough Goo. It's 400kv motor only producing 1000 watts of power. Sounds like the G110 might be better. Run on 8S ( 2 x 4S)

For 3D the rule of thumb has been 150 watts / lb. Correct ? S0 you need something that produces at least 1050 watts minimum 746 watts per HP . How many HP does your 15cc glow produce?

I didn't make this up: http://rcmb.org/Electric_Info/glow_elec_bonus4.pdf

http://www.gregcovey.com/glow_conversions_made_easy.htm

Good luck on your choice and happy prop hanging. Nice plane !

The 15cc gives a spec'd 2.1HP .... and I have rpm of 9500.

I want to stay with 5S as I have 5S 3000 packs I can double up if needed.

I looked at 5055 Turnigy but even that is marginal.

In theory I should get away with 7 x 150W ... 1050W. But when I look for motor - I don't see decent prop size capability.
If I fit a 12 or 13" prop I will not get the vertical grunt.

I'm plumping for the Turnigy 5055 400kv with 15x8 prop on 6S 3300 pack.

See what it does ...

Enjoyed flying my gasoline powered Zlin today ... and think it would be nice to have an E powered version for convenience.

If you can get your hands on the Leopard line of motors, you will be impressed for the cost.
I'm running this in a 60" 70e class MXS at 6 pounds auw and it is a rocket with 15x8. Hovers at 1/2 throttle. This is on a 6 cel pack though. Leopard offers a pretty large variety of kv winds to accommodate prop size restrictions and flying styles.
Great bearings, 8mm prop adapters etc. all the things that turned me away from Turnigy.

The biggest problem for me is getting items in Latvia. There are many items that are available in USA but importing to Latvia is often not possible or costs are just crazy.... after taxes.
Hobby Kings EU warehouse means quick delivery at reasonable price.

Had a great flight today but one was enough ... hands were freezing by end of it ...

6 mins and still 'juice' left in the battery ...

Today I did all she could ... loops, rolls, inverted, prop hanging. the lot ... what a peach !!

This is one fine machine ... sadly Hatcam failed me today ...

This sadly crashed due to my being stupid quite a while back and the broken frame / wing sits there ... but she is BAD ... would be major affair to get her back flying again..

The cowl and canopy are totaled !

BUT ... I still have the gasoline powered Zlin ... and just ordered another 5055 motor. This one though is the 600KV version - so will prop back a touch ... ie 15x8 or 14 if needed.

The Gasoline powered version is really good ... but the E-Power one had a bit more versatility to it.

Will update as things move on ...
