Default MISTER MULLIGAN Before & After Repairs

This Golden Age Racer like so many had a colorful history. I t was the only one to win both the Bendix and Thompson Trophy Races the same year - 1935.

Great Planes Electrifly supplies it in a 1:7.2 scale ARF. I have a passion for Golden Age Racers so ordered it from Tower Hobbies. It went together very well and has a very commanding presence but I confess it intimidated me and I put off flying it for a while. I finally found a good day and maidened a month ago 01 Aug 2014.

It flew like just beautifully with absolutely no bad habits and landed like a dream. Not at all like I'd seen in a few videos and despite some cautionary comments.

Two days later, on second flight of the day (5th overall) - exactly one month to the day I lost signal on and he went down, completely out of control. Once I got past some of the ugly disbelief and the adrenaline rush, damage really was not that terrible considering it went in from about 65 feet altitude and downwind.

Repairs have finally been made and I hope to taxi test and re-maiden soon as I get a Wx clearance.

Meanwhile here's some pics before and after......

Not much wing and it's short coupled but fly's very honestly from my experience. However the wing tip required repair, and I'm curious if it'll will affect performance.

Thanks for looking into the Apprentice for me Dick. Hopefully I'll get a good flying plane with her, now that I have my own Rx in her. Let you know how it turns out.

Excellent Mike.....I'll talk to you later via land line for the flight rpt meanwhile.

Couldn't download pics of the J-3 - I'm having to use my old laptop without the software.

Carry on as were smartly dawg

Default E-flight J-3 Cub 450

The finished product - tried to maiden Saturday, 25 Jan 2015 but faced with unsettling complications at the local fairgrounds. Will try again Sunday....

Photos from the prior eve.

Specs:
W/S 51"
Length:32.9"
AUW: 35.5oz
Power: Efl PARK 480
ESC: 40A
Bat: 3S 2200

EFL Stock power options suggest Park 450 to 480 - I had a 480 on hand so went with it although I think the 450 would be fine and allow less weight.

E-flight currently is discontinuing - avail for $99.00 now/ free ship over $100.00

Default Flight Log 27 Jan 2015

What Perfectly beautiful flying Wx today. Clear vis, no clouds, or wind at all.

The new J-3 Cub maiden went well up to the last when a little x-wind gust damaged both wing tips and a stringer in the fuse. Repairs were made last night and and it flew perfectly today. What a sweet little plane to practice touch and goes, not to mention a relaxing experience. It's definitely a light wind airplane though.

The Corsair has always been a joy - nothing more to add there. Honest, thoroughly predictable and very satisfying to fly.

Mr. Mulligan flew for the first time in several weeks and it is also a joy. Very stable, exciting to fly and a sweetheart to land. Some pics from today thanks to a buddy.

It was good day......nay, it was great day.

I don't think you'll regret getting this Corsair Mike. It's pretty certain it'll be your "go to airplane" anytime you want to have a great time without excess stress..... can't wait to get together.

Also looking forward to showing off 2 or 3 planes you haven't seen yet too.

Default Salute to the Gee Bee Mini Senior Sporster

Remember this one - ? Yeah, I know I do, since I crashed it more than any other plane I've built so far in the last 6 years.

I've been rebuilding a fuselage from bits and pieces saved from all the carcasses with a new wing that I had on hand. Plans are to rebuild at least one used wing as well.

The dummy radial needed a replacement cylinder so one was carved from foam, painted and stuck on.

Turnigy SK-3536-910Kv and Turnigy 40A ESC will be a power upgrade with HXT900 servos all a round providing control.

The new wing was modded for the Maxford gee Bee Y sprung gear and fitted with rebuilt wheel pants.

PUBLISHED SPECS
Scale: 1/12
Wingspan: 48.5 in. (1232mm)
Wing Area: 395 sq.in. (25.5 sq.dm)
Length: 36 in. (906mm)
Wing Load: 12.4 oz./sq ft (37.6 g/sq.dm)
AUW: 34OZ. (960 g)

CUSTOM SPECS
Motor: Turnigy SK3536-910
ESC: Turnigy 40A
BEC: N/A
Prop: 11x5.5
Bat: 2250 3S
Servos: HXT900 Ailerons; Elev;Rud
CG: 65mm/LE
AUW: 41oz/2.6lbs./1175g

Additional: Instrument Panel; Pilot; Dummy Radial; Sprung Landing Gear - Mains & Tail (Maxford USA Gee Bee Y)
I may consider adding struts to the tail and maybe even some flying wires....

More to follow, as the rebuild concludes and a maiden is planned.

Slow work on reconstructing and rebuilding some wheel pants with fiber glass and Bondo.
They'll be much stronger and heavier with all the added FG but I feel confident the airframe will handle the weight.

The Gee Bee is basically ready for maiden with out wheel pants if the winds cooperate.

I bought a plastic two blade scale prop hub from Hobby Express and added a couple scale adjustable 11" prop blades. This prop prior to maiden to check performance. Most flying will probably be with an APC 11x7.

Anybody out there.....?

For what it's worth the rebuilt Gee Bee is a proven airframe once again. The maiden was complete success and has flown about half dozen times since. The reinforced gear boxes and fiber glass wheel pants really work well.

Too bad this plane was discontinued....

Mike,

Yeah, the maiden was a success and she's flown about half dozen times since. All flights have been great.

The Turnigy SK-3536 910 provides good power but I'd like more speed so will try an 11x7 or maybe 12x6 prop. The bottom wing landing gear slots for the Maxford gear were reinforced and the old, beat up wheel pants strengthened with FG...very pleased with the results.

Been using standard 3s 2200 bats bu curious how it'll handle a heavier 3100mAh 3s bat next.

I'm out of town for about two weeks or so...... currently in Lake Charles, LA but dpt for Ft. Bragg, N. Carolina tomorrow - Wed 12 Aug.

Call me if you want on my cell.

That's a good looking plane Mike and I'm thinking it should be a good flyer. You look like your voltage count is a little low.

Really looking forward to getting together....we'll keep in touch.
