Default New project - Peter Goldsmith designs Sapphire, now with Lights!

Many of us have wonderful memories running through fields chasing free flight models. One of the latest revelations in RC is to relive those classic times resizing some of the classic free flight models and making them RC.
Although the Sapphire is of no particular model, it still captures the essential look and flight performance of the period. If your interested in reliving aero modeling from the 50ís or just want to enjoy the simple relaxing pleasure of a retro design, this could be the model for you. The Sapphire makes a perfect light lift slope model or if you dont have a slope handy, you can install the 64MM EDF for propulsion.

Kit includes all laser cut parts, full size plan, pushrods, control horns, sheeting, spar stock, just choose your favorite covering and RC equipment and you will have all you need to get this classic design into the air.

Weight: 3.5-4lbs (1.4-1.6kg)
Span: 96" (2.45m)
Length: 75.6 (1.92m)
Airfoil: PG1223
2-3ch: 2 Servos
64mm EDF thrust system

I managed to be the first person to order from Peters new website. pretty cool as he makes some great kits. This is the same guy who makes my Foxbat kit.

The completed plane in the picture is from the website, hopefully mine will look a lot like that one. Looking forward to spending some time at the building tale this fall.

Nice. I have saved that URL. I also like his link to the AR410 antennaless Spektrum RX

Off to a good start last night. Got the right half wing almost all framed up. After building my Foxbat wing this is a breeze!

Had a setback to building over the last week as we had a 7 day search and rescue mission here in the park that sadly did not end well.

Hope to get back to building soon but planning to go down to Hodges Field for the fall electric fly in next week so may be a while before there is any more progress.

Love the look of this glider...love the karmann ghia too!

Where would the 64mm unit go on this? Tried to find some pics but no luck. Will have to think about this one just as a glider!

So too busy building last week to post but here she is all framed up. Still have a few punch list items to work on before covering but she is sitting pretty now.

It will be getting loaded up with LED's for night flying and then covered in Ultracote park lite transparent red and white.

Been a while since I updated. Been a crazy couple weeks and cooped up in training for the last 2. Anyway, the Sapphire is coming along nicely. I basically have a ARF at this point. Just need to add radio gear and balance. And then a few final touches to the covering and she will be ready to fly.

Twas a good weekend! Went out Friday to maiden the Sapphire but had some issues, including weather, that kept us from making the attempt. Made some adjustments Saturday between football games and went out Sunday ofter church for a successful maiden!

She sure flies pretty! Not a competition sailplane for sure with the edf and climb rate but it is going to be a hoot to putz around with. I just needed a light trim adjustment to the elevator to make her fly level with minimal power for just cruising around.

I am going to enjoy this one for a very long time!

Thanks, Having to do some minor re work to the lower pod that holds the motor. one of my light wires dislodged and got sucked into the fan disintegrating the blades and part of the structure. Repairs are almost done now.

One of the problems with cars, if you ever give one a name it is dang near impossible to get rid of! My Ghia was given to me by a long time family friend and he passed away a few years ago. Our goal was to get it restored and put it in parades together. His name was Gene Champ. I really do miss my friend, but he will live on in this little Ghia named Champ.
