Those look interesting. I bought these from Hobby Lobby, but haven't given any a try yet.

Also check on how hot the things get. I am tempted to try them, but I am too concerned that they if they fall off or the plane crashes it could start a fire on the ground.

The cartridges are definetly a fire hazard. There is no way to shut the darn things off once they are lit. Models equipped with the smoke cartridges may not be covered by the AMA insurance. Those in the know may chime in here.
So.....smoke is one of the things the slimers do better than the electrics.

They are legal to use at a AMA field so I assume they would be covered, providing the device is securely attached to meet code.

Here is the exert from the 2007 AMA safety code.

8. I will not operate model aircraft carrying pyrotechnic devices which explode burn, or propel a projectile of any kind. Exceptions include Free Flight fuses or devices that burn producing smoke and are securely attached to the model aircraft during flight.

Not to mention the smoke to be cleaned off of the plane.

They are used to find leaks in the pressure side of air conditioning ducts. Some can be hand held.

Read the instructions or call the company. Do both for our uses.
