Why chance of mid-air higher if less planes in the air?

Default Why chance of mid-air higher if less planes in the air?

That's my experience over many years of club flying and attending shows and events. For example, last weekend, typically 5 or 6 planes in the air in this hall...and there was a mid-air when only 2 planes were in the air. Must be some logic to it!?

I tend to agree. When a group of 5-6 of us are trying to knock each other out the sky with our F-22 'prop in the slot' foamie profile planes, it's not a regular occurrence.

Possibly when lots of planes are in the air people are very conscious of the risk of a mid-air so fly cautiously keeping one eye on the other planes, giving them space and sticking to a flying pattern. When there is only two planes in the air people tend to be a bit less careful.

Also you cant draw any conclusions from a one off event.

We typically have maybe 20 planes in the air when we do our 'streamer' events at shows ... in the two years doing them with present club - I can only think of two mid-airs ... one that cut tail of my Hummer and other was someone elses ...

As JPF says - with less in the air - you observe others with less caution ...
