Default Longmont Electric Aircraft Flyers (LEAF)

http://www.leafrc.com/
Located on the edge of Longmont, Colorado LEAF is an RC club devoted entirely to electric and silent flight. With electric flight being outlawed in many municipalities folks who need a place to fly will find LEAF a fun club with great folks and an excellent place to fly. Weather you fly micros, or are into gas to electric conversions, Helis, or Gliders/Sailplanes, LEAF is the place for you.

I'll start with an introduction:

For those that don't know me, and some that do but don't know about me; I started flying RC models in 1982 with a Goldberg Eagle 63, Futaba FGK and OS 50FSR. Previous was pretty much paper airplanes, some Guillows rubber powered FF kits and stunt (two line) kites. I work from home for IBM, although I have to go in to the site on occasion. My current R/C interests include scale models, thermal duration gliders, helicopters, off-road nitro trucks and boats (mostly sailing and electric). My current favorites are the one's I haven't crashed! Well even some I have, including a powered DG1000 2.6m glider, my powered Bird of Time, my unpowered 2.6M ventus my e conversion spitfire and my e conversion Pantera.

Default Antonio Mendes Intro

I've been flying at LEAF for the last 3 years and it's so close to home that makes it simple. In the begining I was getting tired of seeing the same people there (me, me and me) but now it seems that people fly there more often. Specially with the winter time coming, I'll be flying there often.

I fly foamies, small (40") and big (51") electrics here at LEAF. I also fly gas models but in another field. I wish that those trees on the left side of the runway weren't there so I don't need to climb them to get my buddies airplanes... but you cannot have it all.

I know we have a solar weather station but I didn't yet learn how to use it. I go outside look at the weather and as long as it is not raining I'm going Ok... and 15MPH winds... don't really care about snowing... it's fun.

Come on guys, let us keep going on this thread.

Thanks.

Antonio

I'm on my second year flying at LEAF. It's been a great little club (and close to home) to fly at. Those of you who know me know I spend my fair share of time there

The stuff I usually fly at LEAF:
1) 3DHS 55" Extra 300 SHP
2) Extreme Flight 48" Extra 300 EXP <--Sick
3) GreatPlanes Reactor Bipe
4) E-flite Mini-Funtana X
5) T-Rex 450 V2
6) Mikado Logo 10

Like Antonio, I also fly giant scale aircraft at another club.

I've been a member of LEAF for a couple of years and really like this club. It has the friendliest people I've seen in many a club environment.

Professional Experience
IBM 30 years......Primarily manufacturing engineering and management. Currently retired

Hobby Experience
Been in the RC hobby since about 1956. Started with control line then into rc boats, rc single channel stuff in the late fifty's. Gliders in the sixties, slope soaring in the seventies. In the eighties it was power planes of all types. Currently doing electric aircraft as well as 30 size heli's. Have seen the progression of technology through the years that's just been amazing.

Thumbs up LEAF Winter Fun-fly

Hey guys, what did you thought about the fun-fly?

It sure was COLD but I surprised the amount of pilots and spectators that showed up. We talked a lot what to do next and how to continue to make the club "grow" in members quantity and also quality.

Although we "only" fly electrics there, we should have a safety officer and specially at weekends have the channel board out and effective.

What do you guys think about this? Any more ideas? Maybe if we posted here we won't forget about them

Thanks for coming guys...

Guy's,

I'd say that despite the less than favorable weather the fun fly was a great success.

Thanks to all that made it possible.

Not a member as I live in Denver, however a great field and a good group of people. Sorry we didn't make it to the fly-in, the weather here in the metro area was horrible.
We hope to have some electric fly-ins here at DRCE.
Keep up the good work gang and we will see you at the fun fly's.

Who ever did it needs to be drawn and quartered.
Let us know what we can do to help fix the runway.

Thanks for the offer! We have several work parties planned to prepare for our May8 fun fly that is scheduled (and is posted to www.leafrc.com and should be on the AMA site)

We were able to schedule a tractor today and will be re-leveling the runway and parking area. Anyone interested can contact Antonio for more information.

thanks,
DA
