Cool How is pattern different from 3D?

I know they are different but wondering how one approaches them differently. or has 3D replaced pattern in the electric flying arena?

In my opinion, and take it for what it's worth...

Pattern flying simulates a routine that would be more closely associated with a real aircraft.

3D on the other hand, has maneuvers that only a model aircraft could perform. Tourqe rolls and hovering a foot or less of the ground for example, could never be done by a full scale. At least not that I have ever seen anyway.

I don't see the pattern events much anymore. We used to do the SPA events at my club in Virginia but it has gone by the wayside now in favor of things like IMAC meets which seem more 3Dish to me.

Pattern Flying IMO is predetermined graceful aerobatics. 3D is Post Stall violent maneuvers. A 3D plane can do anything any sport or pattern plane can do, but only a 3D plane can do 3D.
