Default The Slow Stick Chronicles

I get questions all the time regarding some of my Slow Stick perversions. This is an attempt to gather the various builds all together in one place. Please keep in mind early on I kept few records of my builds so descriptions are lacking but I do remember some details and will post video links and pics when available. I hope this helps with some of the questions I get.
When the Slow Stick first became available I built a geared 300 followed by a geared 400 when it became available. Then in 10/2002 I built and added flaps to my first twin 400 powered Bipe which worked well to slow the already slow landings. I will add planes in order of build.

Rather than list all the various early brushless installations seperate and some of the non related mods that were not a part of a specific build here are some pics. Strip aileron plane was Mega powered and on a loop center wing rib collapsed turning plane into lawn dart. This was the beginning of my wing mods.

Here are a couple of early Videos. The first is a short clip of the Astro 020 equipted SS:
http://rcuvideos.com:80/video/SS-wi...0-Brushless2-mo
The other is a SS equiped with ailerons cut out from the marked wing outline. Still needed full rudder to turn well but looked cool in flight.

In 9/2003 I built what I called the Monster Slow Stick. It was powered by a geared Speed 600. Wings were reinforced top and bottom with fiber reinforced packing tape.

This was a really fun plane the 4 motored Slow Stick. Here is the description:
The latest SS perversion has 4 Lensrc 21.5mm 15T motors swinging 7 X 3.5 HD Props on 3S lipo pack. Combined thrust is 52oz and AUW is only 31.3oz. Motors are mounted using 4 Slofly motor tubes which are from www.lensrc.com along with the motors. Speed control task is handled by 4 Thunderbird 9 esc with 3 of the BEC's disabled. Battery and battery box is mounted on the front of the fuse same as the 8 motored SS was. Wing reinforcing was upgraded with 1/8" rods on LE and TE and a 3/16" rod with a brass dihedral tube mounted at the CG. Motor mounts are 2 pieces of 1/4" hard balsa sheet with 1/32" ply glued to each side. Mounts were further hardened with thin CA. Tail feathers are reinforced with split carbon rod. The 4 motors are producing 255W which at 130W/lb. makes for one overpowered plane!

Turn your sound up as the motors really scream at WOT.

On 6/2006 I built the following Bipe AP Plane. Description follows:
SS Bipe scratch designed for AP and on board video. Equipment as well as the 2 Slow Stick Kits is twin 21 Brushless Outrunners with Aluminum Stick mounts swinging 8 X 4 props in Tractor/Pusher Config, Twin 15A Esc, 3S 3100 Polyquest Pack, Carbon reinforced wings at 4-1/8" CG point on both wings and at center rib LE to TE. Carbon reinforced Tail feathers at hinge line on Fin and on front of Stab, 5/32" LG and 3" wheels, Hitec 5 channel RX and Hitec HS 55 Servos. This setup will give me 42oz of thrust. I have designed the camera mount for the tripod socket which will allow straight ahead video and pics without prop interference and side angled AP shots. Wing Supports are 1/8" X 1" aircraft ply with single 1/4" balsa center web on rear support and 1/4" balsa box on front wing support and diagonal 3/8" square brace from lower rear wing support to upper front support bolted to aluminum fuse top and bottom reinforced with basswood epoxied inside tube. Thrust correction will be 4 degrees for both tractor and pusher. Camera is DC ISONIC DC520 5.2MP which will give me 5MP pics and 640 X 480 - 30fps full motion Mepg 4 Video for up to 30 minutes on the 2G SD Card. AUW for setup is 52.6oz which gives me a trainer like wing loading of only 7.49 oz/sq ft which is a piece of cake for the Bipe wings and is heavy enough for handling some wind and should cut down on float.
Update:
Added wing struts and flying wires and enlarged rudder & fin. Plane responds great to controls even at slow speeds and in wind. It is rock steady and flys like it's on rails. Final Pics Posted. Plane far exceeds my design expectations!

Some time in here I built a SS with Tiperons. Flew great but one of the Mickey Mouse control horns let go at about 100 feet up and it lawn darted in destroying it. Maybe some day I'll build another. Sorry no video.

Another AP Slow Stick. Here is Description:
Motor is a Himax outrunner 2816-960 on 3S 2200 Polyquest. Prop is APC 10 X 4.7 SF.. Camera is my Minolta Dimage Xi and camera and batteries and camera/battery mount weight 12.7oz. Wing will be reinforced with 0.140 Carbon rod with brass dihedral tube at the CG from tip to tip and 3/4" strapping tape strips and root rib will have the usual carbon reinforcing the width of the rib 1/8" LG with 3-1/2" wheels. AUW is 32oz which is the weight I like for windy conditions and short fields. I found at that weight the plane can be greased into smaller spaces and will have a much shorter landing approach without the float on forever problem Fuse has plastic tube insert past the front wing mount and stab and fin have a split carbon .098 rod inserted and CAed into a grove in the hinge line cut with burr in Dremel. Really stiffens up the tail feathers without adding a lot of extra weight. Control is by HS-55's and DuBro Micro control system including micro control horns in plywood. Power System develops 165W and 32oz thrust with 10 X 4.7 APC SF Prop at 16A.

Next is the Tri-Plane. It failed at the fuse connection on ROG even though fuse has full length basswood insert epoxied in place. Destroyed my 3300 3S Lipo.

Last but not least is the Tri-Motored Slow Stick. Yet to be maidened.
AUW is 35oz and power is by 3 Blue Wonder Motors w/8 X 4 GWS HD props on 3S 2200 lipo. Power meter shows 240W which gives me 110W/lb so vertical will be quick!

You can find many other of my Maiden Videos at:
http://rcuvideos.com/search/?search...o=1-5&x=26&y=12
Several of my Slow Sticks aren't covered here as there have been well over 20 I have built. It also didn't cover the Stevens Wing, Tipsy Nipper wing, Virus Wing and Wild XX SS. Many of those can be found at the above link. Comments welcome.

Wow Boomer.....I've followed alot of your work at RCG over the years, but when you combine all the different planes in one thread.......Wow, there is alot!

Myself and others have appreciated all the R&D you've done with this plane - Thanks!

You know it's hard for me to believe but since I started keeping track of my builds in the last 4 years I have built just over 200 planes.

Hehe, reminds me of one of those old movies where they built a plane with a dozen wings and the whole thing folds when it starts moving!

I really like your SS Bipe. I might try something like that.

Yeah except this one actually got off the ground. It was about 50 feet up when it actually let go even though it fractured on take off. That's the reason the lipo was destroyed.

Talking

I'm actually considering building a 6 motored but still deciding if I can reinforce the wing enough to keep the proposed power from tearing the wings off. The 17g brushless motors I am looking at would produce a estimated total of 384W at 37.8A with 90oz of thrust swinging 7 X 3.5 props on a 3S lipo. What do you think guys? Should I try it? It sure would be a crowd stopper.
Scrapped the idea see the post below.

News Flash.............
A supplier has developed a bunch of laser cut goodies for the Slow Stick that sound fantastic. He has a beta package of them on it's way to me which should arrive in a few days. I will be building another Slow Stick using the goodies and will do a thread. From what I know now they will be must have mods for the plane. Stay tuned.
