Default Combat Foamy Maiden Flight

I picked up a combat foamy from Dan Malone (he makes them for Mac Hodges.

Interesting plane made out of 6mm Depron with a brush-less motor, two servos for elevons and a 1000mah Lipo.

Took me awhile just to get it set up on my DX7 (I had never done elevons before) Charge up the battery and off to the park.

The park is located near an Elementary school about 200 yards away. When I got there the wind was blowing about 12MPH with gusts. I'm thinking to myself....hmm...light foam plane....new to elevons.....never done anything remotely 3D.....It'll be ok.....just a quick flight.

I had the throws set at 1/2" or 64% deflection on my DX7 and the Differential set to 50% (Aileron's 1/4" down 1/2" up)

I was all set and no one was around to see my embarrassment. I put the throttle at WOT and it took off out of my hands without throwing it....man can this thing climb.......why is it curving over quickly.........and with a turn to the left.......I quickly tried to counter the turn as it was curving over the top......hmmm.....dosn't seem to responsive to turns......whooa pull back on the throttle quick.....this thing comes down fast......real fast....maybe with a little up elevator I can keep it from hitting on the nose.........almost made it too.

I walked over and the only damage was a broken prop....well I had a handful of those......Whats that I'm hearing.....it's applause.....I look around and a whole playground full of kids had shown up standing at the fence cheering.....OK so it was a neat looking flight at least....I walked to the truck for another prop to the chants of "do it again"..."do it again".

This time I dialed in some right trim and down elevator and launched it again. This is a neat plane the winds were messing with me some.....OK a lot.....but that didn't stop me....I did a couple of loops and tried to circle around but the wind caught me and down I went Again.

The next several attempts were done slowly with the purpose of getting to know the controls and response of the plane.......only one more broken prop.....all to the cheering of the kids.

I changed my throws to 45% and my Differential to 30%......Boy did that change the resposivness.....this thing will turn on a dime and still stay in the air.......sort of......well.....somtimes anyway

I'm very happy with it after at least 15 launches and 2 good landings I only have a small crack that packing tape will fix. This is real new to me and with some more practice......and a little less wind....I might be ready to play with others......Ok, OK....a lot more practice.....but this thing is awesome fun.......and yes I do mean fun!

Will you be attending the 08 SEFF?

A few of the guys here are planning on doing a group build and combat.

This is one of the planes we are looking at using.

Ray!

OMG! I just bought one of those. A guy in my club flies one, and 4 or 5 of us ordered them thru him. Got a great deal. Must be the same guy.

I got mine with red stripes. Can't wait to bring it to SEFF!

looks like we should use this plane.

since a few of us already have an unfair advantage with it already.

yeah, I'm feeling lucky.... not.

going to hodge's in two weeks, I will pick one or two up there, and get practicing!!!!

Had I been spelling "winner" you would be right.

As it is, I got the spelling correct.

The link is embedded next to your name in every quote. That's what the little greater than symbol is for.

I had to remove my "droll" from another posting.

I decided to look it up.

It meant the opposite of how I was using it...

Stopped to fly on my way home from work. Zero wind makes a much different flight. Loads of fun.

I wanted to get some in before the 1.5 hour drive home...

breeze is up, and the park is by the bay, so it will be windier there...

Went out this morning and flew the foamy. Wonderful plane. I added 25% expo and also set up low and high rates. I'm starting to get real comfortable with this plane. So much so that tonight I started building another from scratch. I have a spare Park 450 that should power it. i'll let ya'll know.

I "maidened" this tonight. It flew for about 25 seconds, and I remember hearing someone yell "watch out" when is zoomed behind the flight line. Holy crap this thing is fast.

I guess I need to dial in some low rates and try that......and maybe some expo too.....of course, first I need to replace the broken prop.....

Exactly!!!

I started with 25 9X5 props.....I still have 19....but I'm getting a lot better at this type of flying....I can stay in the air for several minutes each flight.
