Default To gear or not to gear

Been flying RC for some 30 years now and I am setting up my first foamy. I bought a 32 Amos kit from BP Hobbies and it includes a super lightweight wire landing gear. As I have not tried hovering I do not like the idea of doing the hand catch yet. Do many people fly with a gear, and if you do does it affect the flying any?

Instead of gear line the bottom of the profile with a sheet of balsa. This will protect on landings AND prevent the profile from becoming skewed.
