Default Sonic Booms

Whens the last time you heard a sonic boom They happened all the time when I was a kid in Key Largo. Homestead AFB & Key West NAS. The last one I remember was back in the 80's when I saw the Space Shuttle land. I see 2 F-15 in Seattle went ballistic over a Cessna 180, violating Obama's airspace.

Not since I lived in Orlando. Always scared me to death when the shuttle came back in the wee morning hours. It's been more than 10 years now.

Link to said report of the F-15s?

OK, I found a report. Some guy in a Cessna float plane violated the temporary 30-mile flight restricted area while Obama was in Seattle. Said he had no idea of the restriction.

Oops, I see someone who may be getting their license pulled.

Smoke go to utube and do a search it is wild they have some with the blue angles doing a low pass in a bay the flyer does it a couple of times plus you can see the sonic boom created around the plane.

I have never heard one myself would be cool though just not getting rattled out of bed in the morning by it..

I have seen video, it would be neat to experience it so that I can feel the boom.

Gotta love those Navy boys!

We got to hear the shuttle booms this year at SEFF as they were returning over southern Georgia. Very cool indeed.

Being a retired AF vet and still working on the base at Langley I have heard my share of them for sure.

The two that I will never, ever, forget were the two alert F-16's going supersonic en route to Pennsylvania on 9-11-01.

Sure it wasn't a Kenmore Aviation Beaver Floatplane?

The report I read said Cessna 180 Float Plane. But of course, reporters are stupid and often get plane names wrong.

He had his plane moored at the Kenmore Air facility, but he was just a private pilot and his girl friend.

I live south of Seattle, and one of the fighter planes went by me slightly to the west side of me and the other went by slightly to the east of me, the sonic booms were very load and I didn't know what the was going on with a noise on each side.

I haven't heard anything that loud since I learned how to make black powder in high school.

Did anyone else get the NOTAM that said all RC MODEL FLYING was also banned within that same 30 mile radius? I got an e-mail from the AMA on Saturday night warning of the closure.

My home field is inside that range.

A new FDC NOTAM/TFR has been issued for the greater Seattle, WA metro area for Tuesday, 8/17 from 10:15a until 4:15p PDT. The TFR is issued for security purposes to cover VIP movement in this area. Model aircraft operations are prohibited in the 30nm circle for the specific times listed below. Please note that TFRs are subject to change with very short notice. Check back often for the most current NOTAM/TFR information.

Timely alerts are also available on the web or on you cell phone at: Twitter.com/amagov.
See the link to the TFR below for more detailed information regarding the restrictions.
  • Area 1 (8/17, 10:15a - 4:15p PDT)
    (30nm radius from Latitude: 4736'01"N, Longitude: 12218'26"W)
  • Area 2 (8/17, 10:15a - 4:15p PDT)
    (10nm radius from Latitude: 4736'01"N, Longitude: 12218'26"W)
TFR - 0/8914

As President of a local club, I always get emails from the AMA when a NOTAM affects our flying area. Typically only happens when the President or VP fly in.

Once in a while they move the Shuttle landing to Edwards air force base, and we get a nice boom (actually two booms) - rattles the windows pretty good! The last time was about a year ago. I remember being at Edwards in 1997 for the 50th anniversary of the Air Force, and Chuck Yeager flew supersonic in an F-15. He was going so fast, you really couldn't see him, but the boom was LOUD.

I haven't heard one since living in California. Probably back in the 80's was the last time. However, you can make your own sonic boom with a whip if you miss the sound too much

Talking about AF1. Back in the 1868 a Cuban pilot and his Mig 17, defected and landed at Homestead AFB, and parked next to AF1. He flew at 30 to 50 foot, to avoid radar. My mother & brother caught sight of him as he passed Key Largo. They where on the way to a Boy Scout meeting.

Yes that was in the last issue of a AMA mag. I was surprised to see a restriction on RC models to. Myself I am out side that range so I am good. Unless the President lands at Worc. airport which I highly doubht that will happen.

We get the same thing whenever he comes in to Langley or Newport News, No flying of any type within the 30 mile radius.

Maybe I know something you don't. That I can't type worth a hoot. I'm the king of hunt & peck. I seen a episode of Ancient Aliens on the History Channel, that said, they had jet fighters in ancient times. I have to admit some of their theries have some logical credit. Just how in the heck, did they lift 100 ton stones.

Last one was back in '56. From '45 to '56 they were a common occurance in RI as the fighter jocks from Quonset Naval Airstation would blast off.

Eventually, housewives got fed up with broken dishes and crying babies and the protests put an end to sonic booms over dry land.
