When mounting the receiver, the destructions specify the antennae need to be 90°, the antenna is covered in heat shrink, with a wider section approx 7mm diameter.Is the wider section the entire antenna, or is that a base coil with a further piece of wire extending up the inside of the heat shrink?

I ask as I cannot fit the full heat shrink length inside my plane at 90°

The purpose of mounting them at 90 degree angles is to prevent shadowing and both of the antennas being blocked by, say the battery, from the Tx. If you take care to orient them in such a way that that will not happen then you are good. I have a couple sailplanes where my only option was to run one forward and one backward inside the fuse and they work fine that way.

Brilliant, just wondering if I can shorten the extra heat shrink? It would make the mounting easier and tidier.....

yes if the heat shrink extends beyond the actual antenna wire that is fine. just be careful not to cut the antenna! That would be very bad. lol

I have been trying to see down the hole for any antenna wire ....

I am not sure if the antenna is a single coil with no trailing lead, or is it is a base loaded coil with a flying lead...... I guess I will have to use the scalpel and perform an minor autopsy 😁

A bit of autopsy shows it is a base loaded antenna.....

So I could only trim it by 1/4 inch maximum 😩

How big is your plane, what size battery? if it is not a monster with a big 6-8s pack one forward one back should be fine. RANGE CHECK!!! And do it from different angles to make sure you don't have any blockage.
