Cool 20mm Brushless EDF 'DH 108 Swallow' Jet Build

I was working on a 20mm EDF fan unit some time ago and although the fan was done, I had no jet to put it in. My thoughts were for it to be a replacement for jetex motors since the rules are quite strict Down Under, so a jetex plan seemed the logical choice. I settled on a DH108 Swallow designed by Steve Bage. It came in at 50g inc. battery.
Wingspan: 15.5"
Battery: 150mah 2S
Receiver: Orange micro 4 channel
Fan: Custom built 20mm EDF (3D printed on a Michelangelo) using a 0703 outrunner and clipped 3 blade micro quad-copter propeller.

Maiden was a little squirelly!

After a mod the next flights were much better!

Hope you enjoy.

Nice looking model and it looks like it flies well. A bit too small and fast for my old eyes, however, you flew it well.

Now a question. What is the thing on the tripod? It appeared to have a bottle inverted at one point, then the bottle appeared to be sort of horizontal and then it was gone later.

It's just the boom handle. My son pointed it up in the air. Last outing we put the tool box down in the long grass and at the end of the flights we spent 15 minutes looking for it, so we brought a tripod to mark the spot this time.

OK that makes sense now. I thought you had some secret device to make flying fast ducted jets easier to fly. If so I wanted one.

Thanks for the answer.

It does fly very well indeed.
It does rather sound like your EDF was seriously inlet restricted without the cheat holes. I would expect the added thrust (and speed) cured all your aerodynamic oddities as well.

I am very tempted to make a 'partner' for my little DH Venom.

I want to see that one also, when you get it built.
