Default Hawker Hurricane project

I often do a search on Thingiverse for free 3D models ... and for some time I have considered the Hurricane listed there.

Hawker Hurricane RC plane - 3D printed project by taciucmarius - Thingiverse

First : I do not mean to insult or demean the Designer in any way and I hope that my work producing the model and my modifications I will pass to him ..

What intrigued me - was the replication of the stringered construction the Hurricane had in real form.

But the write-up by designer indicated serious over-weight ...... here's his notes :

Quote >General info
  • Wingspan: ~820mm
  • Length: ~600mm cowl edge to rudder edge (these dimensions depend on how you glue the plane together, calibration of your printer and your choice in the printed pieces)
  • Overall weight: ~1200g (balanced and ready to fly with 4700mA 4S battery, heat shrink film on it and everything else)
  • Servo choice: 9g (SG90) X5.
  • Battery choice: 4S (mandatory at this weight/ portance ratio). I would keep it smaller than 4000mA to save on weight, although I tested mine with a 4700 one.
  • Propeller: 8x4 8x6 (depending on your altitude) I tested mine at 1600m above the sea level with 8x5.
  • Brushless motor: ~300W/1000KV with 40A ESC or anything else that would result in ~1Kg of thrust with your propeller choice.
  • Tip and propeller attachment: The standard bullet propeller adapter would look more towards the original shape of the plane. I tested it with Prop savers as you can see in the pictures and video. The choice is yours.
  • Wing incidence angle: 1.5 degree (adjustable)
  • Nose additional weight: I had to add 142g on mine
  • GC ~65mm as you measure from the front edge of the middle wing section towards the tail of the plane. Or suspend the plane by the tips of the wings. See picture.
  • Material: I used PLA. Feel free to use whatever and post pictures if it flies.
<unquote.

1.2kg for a 820mm span ?? Due I think to extra perimeters / layers suggested.

Will update as work progresses

OK .... fuselage is nearing completion ...

Just missing the nose section and firewall. This has come out at 169gr and is STRONG !!

Estimating AUW ....

Above 169
+ Nose 40
Motor / ESC / Rx / prop / spinner 120
Wing ~ 200
Covering 100
U/C 100
Servos 50
Total : 779 .... lets say 850 giving some leeway ... which in my book is a lot better than 1200 !!

The designer looks to put a large motor with 4S pack ... and an 8x6 prop ........... but for me - I reckon I can get away with a 2830 .. 2836 motor on 3S and a 10x6 prop ... or even a 10x5 to let me have some more run time ..

Airframe now complete except for hinges and gear / motor etc.

But the total print has come out at 350gr.

Estimates now have final flight weight about 900gr.
