Default 1/2 Lanier Shrike

I am currently building a 1/2 Shrike kit and am wondering who all fly's this plane. I am still looking at a motor batt combo and was hoping for some input. Flying weight is between 14 - 19 oz, hopefully on the lighter side. Let me know.

This is a pusher isn't it?
For this flying weight try a Mega 16/15/7 on 3S with a 9x6 APC

If you need to run a smaller prop like a 7x5 go with the 16/15/6

She should haul the mail

It is a pull prop. Thanks for the help, and that is a good looking website.

I have been looking at one of these planes for about a year and half...but other projects always had me saying 'next plane' 'next plane'.

Please let me know how this works out...I am anxious to see one actually fly.

...hey Randy! Good to see you again!

I decided on a Venom v20L 3350 KV with a CSRC 3s 2000mah lipo. It should move.

Wow...thats a pretty high KV motor. Geared? I believe this motor is one of the Feigao product motors.

Boy it was not a great number less than 20 if I recall right. It was actually a radio issue (I know I know) but it really was a good little flyer for it's short life!

Just watching your back on this....

Check the specs on that motor before you go DD with it...

It takes a 4:1 gear ratio for it to spin a 10 inch prop on 3s.

I have no personal experience with the motor....but I have read some with it...

Mike (RCERS on this thread) had a post about this motor back in April (another plane...but same motor...)

3350kv and direct drive on 3s will NOT WORK. That kv is just too high to effectively spin that large a prop. They even show it for geared use - 4:1 with a 10x6 prop...

You need a motor in the 1000-1800 kv range.
If you go with a Mega or equivalent with a lower KV, you will get a setup that is much more efficient (more watts at lower amps) so you can simply drop an 1800-2100mAh lipo in there and fly your tail off.

Hope the info helps...

Rock on soul-bro,

It is the venom v20L 3350....let me know because venom says it can replace direct drive systems.....I might have to run a smaller prop?? maybe a 6x3

No problem, man...

I would think you would need even less prop than that on 3s to keep the motor in its range....like a 4.5X4.5 max....

Again, my numbers may be a little off...but not much.

Traditionally, without a GB to swing a prop that large in the speed 400 class, even with a long can, you need something under half the KV rating of that 3550....

For instance....I have a high turn motor that is a speed 400 class (Mega 3 turn 3000+kv) and a 5.1X4.5 prop draws 42-45 amps static on 3s.

Randys post above is the sweet motor for that setup in the Mega line...

This is a pusher isn't it?
For this flying weight try a Mega 16/15/7 on 3S with a 9x6 APC

If you need to run a smaller prop like a 7x5 go with the 16/15/6

Anyway...hope that helps.

Cant wait to see this thing fly....they just look so cool!

Get em up...cant wait to see them!

How long did the build take? Also, if you can, include any tips with the build, that would be 'creamy', too. I tend to be very visually-oriented...and that helps a ton for me.

...waitin'....watchin....dreamin of my own!

Ok, Talked with Paul at Venom racing....(very good customer service). I can run that motor as a direct drive but a 4.75x4.75 prop will be used.

The Problem is, I am visual also and the instructions do not have pics but If you can read plans the plans are very good.

This is my first true kit. I am slow. I will take some pics tonight....I have made some mistakes and had to "jimmy rig" a couple pieces. Maybe I will do a write up...I am excited.

I have one framed up ....ready to cover... for several years now! I planned to use a DD 400 and a folding prop. But that was years ago, much better stuff out now. You know I'll go brushless and lipo. I don't know if that kit is even sold now.

First off..be ready for some guy named 'Jimmy' to be offended...and a lawsuit to follow...cant use 'Jerry Rigged' anymore, either...as Jerry got offended and sued my pants off....now I must fly foam! Har har har har har!

Hey...the 4.75X4.75 Graupner prop will give you a nice pitchspeed. If you can keep her at 19-22 oz...it should give you some sweet performance on the straight and level....zzzaaaaannng-like. The key with a prop that small and a pitch setup is to get your speed up before trying to go straight up...then your horizontal speed should be able to take you pretty high up.

Later on...when you start mod-ing it with chrome exhaust pipes and headers (hey, we all do it...its inherent of sexy models)...if you go to a larger prop and different motor config...take this baby up to a 7X5 folding prop with lower KV motor and your vert and speed will be nothing short of SICK. Pitchspeed only translates so much without some push from static thrust. Then your eyes spin around and land on two Coconuts every time you take off.

(Ghost made a good point about a folding prop...hadnt even crossed my mind yet).

I am getting so stoked to see this thing....I honestly have checked the thread like 5X since the last post. Dear Lord!!!!...I hope the kids arent playing with the oven again!

Thanks for taking us along for the ride on this one...it really was weird that I have been thinking about this plane for such a while and poof!...here it was!

Heres some pics of the project so far.....I really has been a fun build.

One hint I screwed the front top block in instead of glueing in place so I had acess to the motor and I needed the extra room for the 3s lipo. Not much room in the fuse.

Being a junkie of any plane flying on the Delta Platform (wings, jets, foamies, whatever)...I will not begin to tell you what seeing that triangular wing did for my gut!

Too Cool!
