Default F16 Conversion EDF to Prop

OK guys ... I have a Lanxian 70mm EDF F16 that I really am not fond of. The 70mm EDF flies it - but needs so much power - it is just overweight ... I ended up using 5S in her.

Bare weight all in but without LiPo is 1050gr
LOA = 1020mm
Span = 780mm

My thoughts are to remove the EDF unit and fit a prop up front. If I hollow out the nose area - I can slide a brushless in there and then spinner can give nose cone back.. Battery size can be reduced to possibly 4S ...

Question is what motor and what prop ? I was thinking something around the 35 - 38 size with 8 to 10" prop ?

Ideas please ?

eCalc :

With a 3542 / 1000kv and 9x6 prop ... it says I should have at least 1.49 : 1 Power to weight and max speed of 102kph.

I think the REAL problem is lack of wing area. The wing loading must be enormous. It'll have a speed range of very fast and *loody fast!

The other problem may be that big all-moving elevator in the propwash. We've found converting slope-soarers to electric, that fixed stabs with hinged elevators are FAR superior to AME.

The all moving tail - that got broken a while back and is now fixed + rear moving elevator as conventional plane.

Its surprising actually that she flies slower than you expect ... the fuselage is somewhat a lifting body to complement the wing area.

But not when I first tried the new elevators !! Had to keep speed up to give authority to keep nose up !! Pity about the landing .. buts she's RTG again ..

I gave 1.5kg

Thrust to weight 1.1 to 1,

So it looks like I can shave quite a bit of weight of by not having that hulking great 5S in there ...

Looking in my spares box - I only have a 3530 1100kv so :

I then entered 1.2kg
3S 3000
50A ESC
TGY 3530 1100kv
APC 10x6
=
11mins
257W
1.09 to 1

If I up to a 4S and drop prop back ...

1.2kg
4S 3000
50A ESC
3530 1100kv
APC 8x6
=
13mins
309W
1.2 to 1

VERY INTERESTING !!

The question then remains about launching ... looks like maybe need to look at retracts being fitted t avoid the hand launch scenario - its a big model and no way for own to do it - must be second person. Or a 'dolly'

Hi Nigel Use a 8x8 APC Prop on 3 or 4 cells, it will be powered very close to a V900

V900 .... looks like a smaller version of the EFX Racer ...

We have a club member who has the Voodoo .. another version of the same ... screams round the field ...

The F16 of this thread though is heavy and I think its going to need a prop to get her up and flying as well as speed. Why I plump for a 1100 - 1400kv range ...
