WF Scratchbuild Contest #1 Rules<O</O
<O</O
<O</O
Build Specifications<O</O
<O</O
<O</O
Aircraft Type: 3-channel trainer type aircraft. This aircraft is intended to be flown by a brand new pilot wanting to learn how to fly RC aircraft. In other words, design an aircraft that can be used by a new pilot that will not have access to an instructor or a buddy box.
<O</O
Motor: sp400 brushed motor with gearbox or similar brushless. Since this is a "trainer style" aircraft, motor cost is limited to $25 and should not produce no more than 150 watts
<O</O
Build Materials: This up to the designer/builder. Your choice of materials can be used.
<O</O
Weight: Plane should not weigh more than 25 ounces AUW.
<O</O
Description of plane: When you submit your photos of your plane, please provide a brief description of your plane and how and why your plane meets the specifications above.
<O</O
Note: The intent here is to build an aircraft that can be used by an unskilled pilot that will probably be crashed a lot but will be able to fly again with some simple fixes. It should be designed to be durable.

Im in too since i scratchbuild almost all of my planes(like 95%) lol

wait im still trying to get this straight, are we rating the planes mainly on how well it flies and how good the handling is and how well a noob could handle it? or are we also doing looks and stuff, because anyone could put together a slow stick easily.... thats a pretty good flyer there...

GA,

Here is the official rule on judging the plane.

7. Entries will be judged on design (how well it meets the specification requirements of the contest), appearance, and flying ability.

I interpret this as "Design" being the number one thing I would look at, then appearance -how well the builder made the plane look, and then the plane's flying ability. I rate this as number three priority since good pilots can make a poor flying plane look like it flies good.

Does that help?

Frank

BTW a store bought slow stick is not an original design.

Oh no thats not what im sayin...
see i built a slow stick(lots actually and they fly great!) so thats why i was askin....
thanks for explaining the rules some more... ahhh i miss scratchbuildin, during design and draw class today(engineering class) i saw some scrap elmers foam board from leftovers that they used for building houses that were built after being designed, i had a thought of taking the leftover foam and taking it home.... i was observing how they were cutting it with ease with these razors.... i was like aawww...(kinda like drooling lol) man i wish i could build a plane,, but no time.... plus i gotta go buy some parts(receivers, props, motors etc...) im going to power my plane with a Geared 370 motor on a D gear and an APC 10x4.7 prop, that should be enough to pull around a nice parkflyer.... ahh cant wait for all the school stuff to get over with... got lotsa plane time to catchup on.

quick question:
instead of just having an undercambered wing, what if you attached little end tip things to make it look like its a flat bottomed profile(from a side view of one of the wing tips) so it actually is still undercambered but you add the little things on the end, would this eliminate tip stalls?

Thanks again to Jeff from Heads Up RC for donating the second place prize. I'm thinking that might help participation.

James,

I believe it was Atlanta Hobby. Mike P (the lead penguin) worked the deal.

I agree! We have some decent prizes for our first scratchbuild contest here on WF which should help motivate some folks to participate. If we get enough folks, I'll try to get a 3rd place prize also.

I imagine that would be a pretty darn good success story for your scratchbuild. I'd be interested in seeing that on video.

Yeah i figure i'd have my buddy who i keep promising id let him fly my plane and yet i havent because my planes ive built lately are pretty fast nad need constant hands on control, i keep destroying them before i have a chance to let them fly really.... lol or the battery dies and it takes 4 hrs... so i figured as a payoff for there videotapin and stuff they'll be the test pilots to a nice high wing flyer...

How are you folks coming along with your designs/builds?

You are welcome to chat about them and if you would like to brag a little, you can email me some photos and I post them for you. Just PM me and I'll provide you my email address.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Mine is coming along great. Flew it yesterday for the first time and she's a real floater. Going out today for some torture testing . There's just a few things I'm going to change on the one I enter into the competition but I like the overall design. Now I just need to figure out a sharp looking color scheme.
