E flite Nieuport 17 modified build...
I recently finished up my eflite nieuport 17 build and thought I would share. I've been building quite a few things this year and though I should start sharing . it's been hectic with two kids in two different sports this spring.
I modified the plane mainly by adding some somewhat semi scale ailerons so a scale dihedral could be used giving the plane a more "realistic" nieuport 17 feel when flying. I again used .039" rods in the .032" sleeves with good success, just like the eflite SE5a I did last year. Only this time I just used one aileron servo. I made wire heart shaped ends to the torque rods and slotted and cut servo arm pieces to glue in the front of them. then covered them with black heat shrink and brushed with graphite powder to make them look more like metal.
I sprayed the bottom of the wings with krylon shortcuts silver and liked the match. it was recommended by someone in another thread.
most all of the plane is modified for looks and/or functionality
the vickers is made from scratch out of foil, foam and card stock paper painted flat black and rubbed with graphite. I used information from arizona models pdf files to try to keep it scale.
the lewis gun is a modified stock part with a drum made out of foam and card stock paper, a set of grips and rear handle made out of aluminum and balsa.
the pilot is a 1/12 scale "fighter pilot" with xps foam used to extend his torso and arms for the proper hieght in the cockpit. then he was repainted.
the whole fuselage, including the cowl, was shot with a semi gloss coat of clear lacquer to even out the appearance and protect it a bit from scuffs.
the wheels are lightened mpi 2.5" sport wheels with the stock N17 wheel "spoke covers" glued on. the landing gear is covered in flatened, glued filled, silver lacqer painted, plastic coffe stir sticks.
the tailskid it just the stock one covered with paper and tape, wood grained with markers, and card stock for the silver metal parts.
there are other mods that i'm sure I'm forgetting.

thank you for the nice comments guys.
yeah it flies real nice and easy. the slow flying traits have not been lost at all. it wieghs 11 ounces, but still flies really slow. slower than the eflite SE5a I made last year with the aileron mod.
that being said, the roll rate on the Nieuport definitely won't win any awards. it rolls slowly and loses alot of altitude. I've only had it out twice though. I'll figure out how to get a better roll eventually.
I feel that the more scale set-up gives more of a feel of how the nieuport probably handled. a little unstable at times with the miimal dihedral, a slow roll rate, and a little shaky in a dive. it keeps the 250 slow flyers from all feeling the same in flight.

I have just started on a Nieuport17 Eflite I got at a hobby shop close out sale this winter. For those following this thread I was thinking of a 2712-12 combo from headsuprc..has a 10amp esc and some 5 gram TP servos and a GWS 7x3.5 prop.
May take a while as we have a postal strike going on up here. I like the Italian coloring so I have painted it a light tan and changed the blue to green on the tail/rudder. I painted the fuse a light tan as I had scads of acrylic paint. Perhaps more along the lines of an Ethiopian campaigner back in the day.
I really liked the fish scheme DG60 did but that's beyond my poor talents..

thanks, assuming you meant my plane.
it is a gws 0843 orange prop.
I use sharpies to color it. I first give it some wood grain by wiping the blades with contact cleaner or acetone. you have to make long passes with the rag from the base of the blade to the tip. do it quickly just a few times. this will give it some depth. you can skip that step if you won't be looking too closely at the prop. then make long lines with the sharpie coconut color(light brown) also from the base of the blade to the tip the slow steady lines will overlap here and there and make a wood grain effect. then I do a few lines with sharpie brown. then i blend it in a bit with the coconut. the more brown you use the darker the woodgrain. you can get any shade you want with practice.

Nice video. Actually looks like a plane flying and not a plane trying to be a toy helicopter (with heavy metal soundtrack).
Slightly off topic but I was honestly ready to push the button and order the se5a version when HH announced the new se5a (larger, more powerful, 4-channel, already assembled, and cheaper when you add it all up!). I don't know who does the math there, but they lost a sale.

hobbyjumper - it's a different animal than the e-flite SE5a 250 slow flyer. the 250 will fly incredibly slow, wieghs about 9 ounces, with a 30 inch wingspan.
the new one does not come assembled as far as I can tell, and it wieghs almost 41 ounces with a 37 inch wingspan, so it has a much higher wing loading.
I modified my eflite to be 4 channel, 250 SE5a and I love it. it will barrel roll, hammer head, fly inverted, do an inverted loop! and plenty of fun stuff.
I do really like the new one by parkzone too.

Yes. You're right, of course, about the two planes being apples and oranges -- it's just the penny pincher in me can't reconcile paying more for something smaller with fewer features. (I can't believe the pz se weighs 50% more than the mustang)
Regardless, I will get one of these slow flyers sooner than later -- I'm leaning toward the Jenny. I know it's the first of the lot, and has some design bugs, but I like the look.
By the way, I saw your other videos featuring the hz champ. I have flown the wings off mine (literally) -- what an awesome little plane that is.
