Default In flight fire today!

At the field today, on my 2nd flight with the Foamy F/A-18...about 4 minutes into it, a trail of smoke appears!

I am in a good place, I chop the throttle, make a turn and I'm right on line with the runway. As it goes by on landing final, I can see the speed controller hanging underneath only by the battery and servo control wires! The motor wires have burned off, and the ESC IS ON FIRE!

The motor wires had burned clean off, but the BEC never failed!

I get it landed, run out to it, flip it over, a big breath to blow out the flame, and get the battery wire out all in about 30 seconds from the first notice of smoke.

EXCITING !!!

She'll fly again, no damage to the airframe or motor/fan at all. All in the smoked controller.

Mmmmm fire. I like the idea of a smoke system but maybe this is the wrong way to go about it?

Awesome! Not many RCers can brag of surviving an in-flight fire!

I shouted out and got everyone's attention, the whole place witnessed it!

Lucky to be where I was when it happened. it was easy to make the runway, and I dont know how long the BEC was alive.

#3, frequent failure point was going to fix that day to
A bit windy flying morning but nothing i couldn't handle. 2nd pack into flying my Carbon-z yak 54 and was bringing her in to land. a foot of the grass a big gust on wind come and slams her into the ground, snapped right behind the canopy. Crappy part was i just went to my LHS and picked up some carbon fiber rods to reinforce that area because other people complained about it cracking. So Ive learned my lesson if people say somethign is consistently failing fix it BEFORE flying, never say one more flight wont hurt. Shes all put together now and just a few more strengthening tweaks and shell be flying this weekend.

Ha ha, yeah. Chellie is getting us mixed up.

And my ESC fire started only after the plane hit the water and the ESC shorted. It was not an in-flight failure, just my dumb thumbs that brought my plane down.

TX battery pack let me down.

Been meaning to change it for ages but this morning the charge level dropped like a stone and tx low bat warning on my FF7 started beeping like a computer with violent indegestion 5 mins into a flight in perfect calm weather.

Emergency crash landing but thankfully only a broken prop and bent adapter.

Not the most spectacular crash story but could have been disasterous!

I really do need to replace some of this stuff!

I crashed my new PT-19 (only had 5 flights on it) yesterday on my last takeoff, it pulls to the left on throttle up and I know to add right rudder, but somehow I got the thumbs mixed up and when it started to turn right I unconsciously added left aileron .. result .. ground looped too the left. Cracked the horizontal stabilizer on one side and cracked the motor mount pretty good as well. She;s in the maintenance hanger now for repairs. I have a spare kit, but saving it in case of a catastrophe.

Cheers

aj slick 3dhs wrecked, this plane is going to be replaced because i love flying it sooooomuchhhhh!

having trouble downloading pictures off my phone, willpost the wreckage later......as far as what happened is pilot error by mechanical default.

the carbon fiber rod that joins the wings through the fuse had broken a while back and i repaired it with a hard wood dowel and epoxy. i thought it was a good repair, but in a steep dive with a yank pull out around 40' feet up the wing folded with a clap soundthen it full throttled into the ground.[0 time to think to cut power]

one thing amazes me is the wings are in perfect condition,i saved the rudder and elevator surfaces also.

at least the replacement slick will go together faster as the servos are in the wings and the pull/pull cables are already set to length.

this is another $160 spent to buy an arf. well worth every penny!!

Sorry to hear about your plane, Stu! Was it the 42" or the big one? I've been looking to get the 42" one (don't tell my wife), but it's gone from "Out of stock" to "Not for sale" on 3dhs website. What gives?

Sorry to hear, you are not the only one though, maiden my formosa yesterday evening first three flights pretty good considering kinda windy. fourth one got disoriented in the waning light couldnt tell between dayglow orange and dayglow green.....whole plane was black, but barely recovered in time to see the wing fall off on 4th approach, bout 15ft up, broke prop and bit of nose(only one ) not too bad compared to your five "censored" icons. I figure the orange and green would be a easily seen in the air. But it looked like an stealth formosa.
I crash real bad two wks ago with an 182.

have a good one
cr

at least the winds not howling anymore,......perfect rebuilding weather.....eh yeah!!

hey gang! must be a bad fly weekend..lol...to many crashes.

njs, it was the 42"slick and i highly recommend it to anyone who like to look good flying when in reality the plane flys great.

i just place an order with aero models ,the 3dhs slick was the same price and i hope they aren't dealing directly with 3dhs or the not for sale may be a long back order.....for 149 shipped it's the same price. i ordered the red slick again as i now have spare wings already to go. I'll let you know if aero models has them in stock.

i should learn not to repair key parts that otherwise should be replaced.
