Default FORMOSA II - Radio Setup Question

Putting together a Formosa II that will run an Eflite 480 Outrunner.

I have specific questions about the radio (dual rates, exponetials, etc)

Desired Flying: Stable, Smooth, Level
Radio: Spektrum DX6

Given these factors, what would be my best settings for:
DUAL RATES
-LOW RATE ?_________
-HIGH RATE ?_________
-EXPONENTIAL?__________
-TRAVEL Adjustments?____________

Much appreciated.
I want this eventual maiden flight to go smoothly as possible in terms of radio setup and not overcontrolling the plane.

Thanks

Howdy David,

The 'Mosa II is a blast to fly once you get the hang of all the control surfaces it has to offer. In other words it's quite touchy to fly the first few minutes. I don't have a fancy Tx. with all the mixing and "Expo" settings and such so here's what I did. Make sure the plane is balanced right and the controls are set level especially the ailerons! I set my throws on the control surfaces at about half of what they would go on the control horns and on the servo arms I started out with the push rods in a couple of holes from max. I'm very glad I did that too as it was still a tad touchy. Put your servos for the tail feathers inside the plane under the canopy. You'll be glad you did when it comes time to balance the plane. What motor are you planning on using and how experienced of a flyer are you?

Standing By,
SJ

David: SlowJohn is Soooo Right! Keep the throws Way Down! I don't care if you fly the space shuddle, This thing a sweetheart at low rates and a heartbreaked at high throws, In a year I've got um half-way and plan to stay there a while! don't do nothing with Mix'in your throws as you;ll only complacate things! Have you got any expeareance with sim, wings? she;ll be a bit tippy, stall'y and tail drag'ie at slow speeds ( kinda like my Bub Slow John!!! HaHaaa!!!) Keep the CG nose heavy to start and you'll be wonder'in "what the heck was I worryed about" She'll do plenty of fun things at low throws ( about like a reg Sport plane) , Don't even think about put'in the servos in the back as you'll have a lead sled before you get poundage in the front to make up for um!! I keep mine LITE (24OZ) an fly her at a Very small field with no prob's,Good Luck, your bub, stevePS Don't forget tobeef up the land'in gear, Stock set-up like balance'in a pick-up on a couple of 2X4's, (see pixs)

she;ll be a bit tippy, stall'y and tail drag'ie at slow speeds ( kinda like my Bub Slow John!!! HaHaaa!!!)

I resemble that Well, sometimes maybe
But I sure have fun

Where my Ol' buddy Steve put his tail servos will work just fine and I'd suggest using 15g servos minimum, I used 17g servos and had no problems. I think I probably fly more aggressive than Steve as I had my throws maxed out after about 10 flights. Careful you don't over control it or stall it on take-off. I had a TP 2915-05, a .30 size outty & a 10X7 prop on mine when I traded it off but I do think I'm going to get another one. I throughly enjoyed flying that plane. Take it up a ways and throw the sticks out in opposite corners & then reverse them in, then go to the same corners (left & left or R&R) and by then it was time to recover which it'd do effortlessly. Rolls were awesome and quick.
Ask any questions you may have and good luck with yours.

All great tips. Thank You all!
I'll be running an Eflite Park 480 BL Outrunner.
I should be coming in weight at 1.4 pounds (flying weight : 22 ounces)

Probably be running somewhere around 277 watts of Thrust per pound.
In my calculations are right ?
Park 480 Brushless Outrunner Motor, 1020Kv Product Specifications
Type:Brushless outrunnerSize:Park flyerBearings or Bushings:Ball bearingsWire Gauge:16Recommended Prop Range:10x7 to 12x6Voltage:7.2 to 12RPM/Volt (Kv):1020Resistance (Ri):.06 ohmsIdle Current (Io):1.10A @ 8VContinuous Current:22AMaximum Burst Current:28A (15 sec)Cells:6–10 Ni-Cd/Ni-MH or 2–3S Li-PoSpeed Control:25A to 40A brushlessWeight:87 g (3.1 oz)Overall Diameter:35mm (1.40 in)Shaft Diameter:4mm (.16 in)Overall Length:33mm (1.30 in)------------------
22a continuous *9.9 = 217.8 Watts
28a max. * 9.9 = 277 Watts
----------------------

1.4 pounds * 130 Watts per pound (desired performance)

= minimum required for desired performance = 182 Watts

@ 277 Watts of Power per pound

Way more than I need....
  • 50-70 watts per pound; Minimum level of power for decent performance, good for lightly loaded slow flyer and park flyer models
  • 70-90 watts per pound; Trainer and slow flying scale models
  • 90-110 watts per pound; Sport aerobatic and fast flying scale models
  • 110-130 watts per pound; Advanced aerobatic and high-speed models
  • 130-150 watts per pound; Lightly loaded 3D models and ducted fans
  • 150-200+ watts per pound; Unlimited performance 3D and aerobatic models
  • --------------------------
Does this above example mean I need a 3 Cell Lipo capable of Bursts of 22a continuos and 28a max burst ?

Example...thunder power 2000 Mah (24A continous curr. / 40A max burst)
http://thunderpowerrc.com/html/prolites.html

Thanks
Dave

Almost complete with the model... will posts pictures before any maiden flight.

Yes to the 11.1V 2000mah lipo question. Even with what your stating on your battery specs it's a tad close to maxing it out so I'd be careful of running it at WOT or even real close to it for extended periods and with the 'Mosa II you'll be wanting too very often. You may want to consider using a slightly larger capacity lipo such as this one which I've had good luck with. http://www.headsuprc.com/catalog/Lip...2250%2020C.jpg Also don't continuously run the lipo to it's LVC and I'd keep the first couple of flights short so as to check your lipo for cooling. I wound up leaving my battery cover off of mine to keep my lipos cooler. Be sure to add some Velcro to the battery & the battery compartment to help keep your lipo in place and in the plane while flying. I'm not aware of which ESC your using but I'd suggest using a separate BEC such as this one http://www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the...-3-Amp-/Detail as I'm sure you don't want any of those Heart Stopping moments do you? Set up right the Formosa II is a blast to fly. Best of luck to you with yours. I'm almost positive I'll be getting another one for myself & if you ask another question or two it'll probably seal it for me & the puppy. I can see it now, "Move over little doggy, the big dog's in trouble again"
I think my 81 yr. old mother-in-law may have said it best when she said to me after watching me fly mine one day, "That airplane doesn't like to fly straight does it?"

My Formosa II is complete!
But.... A Big But..
It is weighing in total with battery at 36 ounces!!!!!
That's right.. 2 pounds 4 ounces.

BALANCE seems great. Right on the stock spar it balances perfectly.

I am, however, holding out hope that the combination of:
Eflite Park 480 Outrunner 2000Kv (Up to 275 Watts of Power)
ESC 30 Amp Eflite
Battery: 2200 Thunder Power Extreme 50A / 110A 3cell

will be enough to keep me at around 125 watts .

My wattmeter is reading 256 Watts WOT.

So , opinions welcome.
I really like the way I have set it up and don't see much wiggle room for reducing weight.

OPINIONS please....
If I don't stand a chance with this setup, please tell me.
And if so, could I go to a BIGGER motor.. (e.g. Eflite POWER 10 or next)

THANKS
DAVID

Thanks Steve

A nice easy going flyer is right up my alley.
So I am looking forward to it..

Another quick question if ya don't mind.

How do I calculate Oz. of Thrust?

If my wattmeter is reading:
250 Watts W.O.T
Flying Weight: 36 oz.
Amps Drawn: 26 Amps (WOT)

Thanks

I'm use'in the graph at Head's-up RC, He's got props & watts data on nearly all the towerpro outie's, It's easy to overprop stuff try'in to wring out a bit more um-popa out our set-up's and his data been invalubule

I really rely on Jeff's site www.headsuprc.com a lot. His data is real world, what he's done himself. No worry about if the data has been padded or just flat guessed at.

If you can I'd drill a bunch of holes in that aluminum landing gear to lose some weight. Lay yourself out a pattern on the gear legs and center punch where you want to drill. Then you'll want to start drilling small holes (pilot holes) where you center punched. Then you can drill larger holes as you want. After you've finished drilling use something to deburr the holes and then use some fine sand paper to smooth up the holes as good as you can. That will help keep the aluminum from cracking on hard landings. You can lose quite a bit of weight by doing that to aluminum landing gear, just don't over drill with too many lightening holes.
Hope that helps you out some.

I have a mosa 2 , turnegy 3542-1250 , 9x9 apc e prop , 2250 30 c 3 cell , about 600-630 watts @ 57 amps , i use lots of expo , duel rates , flaperons on a pre set switch for landing and takeoff , will land like a slow stick , cf reinforcement in the wing and fuse , solid cf rod doubling the stock landing gear , on high rates when going fast , will roll in the blink of a eye.....Dennis
