E-Combat in Tulsa
#1

With winter, combat is kind of hit or miss outdoors right now. I will admit that I am probably one of the worst about flying in the cold...I don't like it
. There are guys that fly year round and on every weekend the wind is not blowing so it is always worth checking out.
In my signature you will find links for the Tulsa Unclub and Tulsa Indoors. We are flying indoor combat now with Parkzone Embers and it is a blast
.

The following rules are for the outdoor E-Combat. I am going to leave them up just so I don't have to type them again next spring
.
Objective: To have fun in an enjoyable, safe competition that will be interesting for spectators, inexpensive and challenging for the contestants.
Overview: Eighteen feet of streamer will be provided by the contest director to each competing pilot. A streamer is attached to the aircraft by taping it to the plane on the rudder or rear of the fuselage.
The plane needs to weigh somewhere around 10 ounces and a wing span somewhere around 30".
"Start Combat" will be called after the last plane has been launched.
Rounds usually last around 5 minutes.
An 18 ft. streamer will be used, with a 6 in. contrasting color for cut purposes.
Should any planes have a mid-air, any cuts before the midair will count.
You can only get 1 cut per plane. If you hit a plane that has 3 streamers on it and cut 2 of them it’s still counted as 1 cut.
At no time will the pilot fly over the flight line.
No walking out on the field to retrieve your plane until the end of the round.
If someone signals they are landing for some reason, you will not be able to cut their streamer for safety reasons.
The CD has the last word on all decisions.
Scoring: 10 points per cut

We have been having the most fun just cutting each others streamers for the glory of it. No need to land if your streamer gets cut, just keep having fun. If your plane crashes it is at your own risk if you decide to go out on the field to get it, the safe thing is to just wait until the round is over. The following rules are just a guideline and we don't really follow them. It's just to give everyone a general idea of how it works. The most important thing is to be safe and have fun.

Here is a list of the most popular gear:
Tower Pro 2408-21
20 amp esc
9 gram servos
7.4 1000mah lipo
For the longest time all I used was an APC 9x6SF prop. I recently switched to a Hobby City 8x6SF and I think it gives just a little longer flight times with good speed.
The Most Popular Plane
Most of us are now flying the F&F. Here is a build thread for it.

Send me a PM and we can meet up, I will give you the foam for your first one for free.
Planes for purchase
First check with 2DogsRC. They carry the TopGun line but not in large quantity anymore. If you don't see what you want on their site you may want to send them an email just to check.
Here is a link to the planes available by TopGun Combat Planes. http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...serid=brodiejf
They are no longer sold through EBay, I am just providing a link so you can see what is available. If you are interested send John an email and he will hook you up. [email protected]

Just PM Guy (Lieutenant Loughead) your email address and he will add you to the list. Never mind, I don't think the system will allow you to send a PM until you have 5 post so I will PM you Guys address and you can send it to him that way.

There are two classes in combat, POPGUNS which are 2 cell lipos (7.4V) with stock 300 class brushed motors. And the TOPGUNS which are 2 cell lipos (7.4V) with brushless motors or timed brushed motors.
This is the official info that I have on E-Combat. I know that the brushless motor used by most is the Tower Pro 2408-21. It's cheap, works well, and with a 1000mah battery gives just the right amount of flight time. As long as the battery is limited to 7.4 it should keep the field fairly even. I'm going to edit post #1 with the gear that everybody is using so far for quick reference.

For some good info, check out the Radio Control Combat Association's forum. Alot of us, including a large number of guys in the Dallas/Ft Worth area are trying to support a new class of RCCA combat called 3696. Planes are scaled to 36", and are limited to turning a 9x6 APC at 9000rpm. I've built a pack of MiG-3s, a couple of Mustangs, Zeroes, and FWs.
http://www.rccombat.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=38
There are posts on building, power systems, as well as the current prototype rules.
I use turboCAD to trace in plane 3 views, then scale them to whatever size I need. I've used the same files to scale planes from 36" to 48"
Here is a site where several RCCA members have made DXF files of WW2 fighter plans. These are scaled to 48", but anyone with any experince in CAD can scale them to whatever wingspan is desired.
http://jwtfamily.org/rcgallery/plans
Once you've got your templates laid out, this site contains some good info on building the planes from DOW or Owens Corning insulation foam.

I'm subscribed and wish I was in, however, I have that little obstacle known as a "2.5 hour drive" that will keep me from most of the dogfighting sessions.
Thanks for opening up this thread James. The P-51 that I constructed from free plans for last weekend's melee was close to the size specs but I wasn't sure about the powerplant limitations. I switched out all my batteries from 7.4v to 11.1v over a year ago so that was my only option at the time. I will be visiting HeadsUpRc and HobbyCity real soon and stocking up on some "legal" motors, ESC's etc.
Maybe I can join you guys in Tulsa when I get a chance. Like I said Saturday, I'm throwing the offer out on the table to meet up in Joplin (Grasshopper's stomping grounds) soon and fly some combat. I've got another Wattflyer member here in Springfield that is just itchin to get in on the fun.

Here is another source for the 7.4 batteries since they are currently out of stock at HC. I will hook my plane up to the Wattmeter this evening to give everyone a better idea of how many amps the set up is pulling. That way we can see if a 15C pack would work just as well or if it's a little borderline.
One last thing

Didn't realize you were shooting for profile "shocky" type planes. We were aiming for a combat event that was small enough to make it reasonably priced, but heavy enough to fly in 10-20mph winds, and be durable enough to survive a mid-air. Hence the weight and size. It was also an attempt to revitalize 1/12th scale combat, which is basically dead...
Krysallen-we print the Turbo cad drawings off and use them as templates to cut a block of foam to the proper profile shape, then round them off with sandpaper, surform rasps, or whatever works. IE-we take a block of foam(usually 3 inches thick) and carve away anything that doesn't look like the plane we want to build..
Too use them for profile type planes, you'd use the outline to cut your foam parts on the FFF or Depron, then glue them together like any other profile plane is built. I've built them this way by using the warbird outline, and using the outlines of the Foamy Factory 3DX at the junction points...effectively making a 3DX that has the profile of a WW2 fighter...
This is one of my MiGs. The fuse is 3" Dow foam. The wings are the same stuff, cut on my Tekoa feathercut, and the tail is 4mm coroplast. AUW is 28oz.
Good luck! I wish I lived closer to participate in these kinds of events!

Here is the thread that contains the P-51 plans (pdf format):

This is the build thread:

I customized my P-51 a little by using 2 fuselage pieces vs. 1. Main reason I did this was to take out some of the warp in the Dow bluecor foam and to provide a little more durability. Not sure if this is considered legal though with our combat foamie specs. Can you give me a ruling?
My version came in at 8.35oz. That includes the motor, ESC, 2 9gram servos, tape, velcro, decals, control rods and AR6000 receiver. With a 3S 11.1v 1500mAh lipo attached (RTF), it weighs 11.7oz. I was using a TowerPro 2410-09 from HeadsUpRc.com and a 30 amp ESC from graysonhobby.com. I know 30 amps is overkill with that motor but it was a relatively cheap ESC that I wouldn't worry too much if it got damaged. I plan to use a 20 amp ESC in the future. I was spinning a GWS 1080EP SF prop. The plane flew really great. Can't wait to build another one.
I also found some free plans for an ME-109 (pdf format):
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=545126
I've printed out the plans and hope to start building one this week.
What are some dates that everyone might be available for some combat flying in the Joplin area?

As far as a date to fly combat in Joplin it will depend on how long it takes for a few others to get their orders in and planes flying. I'm ready now

I added the info for the kits to post #1 and put the links for some free plans as well. If anybody finds some kits/plans to add to the list, post them and I will put them at the top of the thread.
I ran some test this evening with the wattmeter and I am shocked at the differences between my packs. Admittedly I don't date my packs and I don't keep track of the number of cycles...maybe I should start :o. I want to run the numbers again before I post anything to make sure I'm not having a fever dream. I will post my results in the next day or 2
