Default Need another edf

I'm looking for a new edf and I need ideas. I have a habu, hl f86, and hl f9f. I want something cheap but fun to fly and lends itself to mods. Any ideas?

Depends on what you mean by mods ... but IMHO - you can't do wrong by checking out the 50mm series from Jpowers (Skyangel).

Cheap, small enough to stick in corner of car ... good performance and do not demand humping great expensive LiPo's.

I fly 2 of the T45's ... one is now converted to pusher with 3800kv + 4.1x4.1 prop / 4S 1600 LiPo ... boy is that FAAST !! She clocked 180kph...

But the above when she was out of box with a 1500 3S pack .. stock motor / fan ...

and then I tried various mods to her ... ending up with cheap mod to 4S and 6 blade fan ... where she hits ~140kph average ... which is about the limit I reckon for this as EDF ...

and her successor #2 with similar set-up ...

Wow, now that's cool. I've wondered about both the t45 or the stinger, but I like what you did with the t45 Solent.

Like Nigel,
I also have had two T-45's(Red Arrows livery) which in this series are probably the tamest and easiest flyers. This one has a big cabin so it's very flexible in terms of lipo selection. I also converted one to a pusher as I did with the Katana(has a rudder). Brings extended life to these planes as they near retirement. In fact, I flew the Katana today and it was scary fast as a pusher conversion. She was anemic as an EDF even though I had her hopped up with a 4S setup. Flew her at less than 1/2 throttle but gave her the berries on the straight low fly by's Wow ! She screams for mercy ! Had a tiger by the tail.

I also have the Hobby People EF-16 64mm. This one is a very smooth flyer. Occasionally they go on sale for ~ USD $79 as an ARF. I'm not crazy aout the foam they use. It's like beer cooler foam and is not CA safe. But she flies on rails

Check with HK, Toysonics and Hobbyb for the best prices on the Jpowers Skyangel series.. Banana used to sell them but I think they may have recently dropped the line. Run about $60-$80 as a PNP. The all use the same 50mm fan and motor, same servos, etc. So parts can be interchanged easily from model to model.

Here's the RC Groups thread providing reviews and discussions: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1348808

Of course, there's the Stinger which many rave about also. Stuart and Fishbonez are our resident experts on that one.

Good luck !

expert!!!!!,not yet...not ever...lol..,but i have expertly hit the ground hard. i fixed her up and may be flying it Saturday in the high winds in a local park as the forecast is less than desirable for flying. gusts to 20mph forecast. the stinger can penetrate and i hope to toss the superfly for a maiden. if i wait for a calm wind day.......hell will be frozen over and pig will be flying.

Hey bbq,
The first pic is an interesting EDF that will definitely turn heads & fun to fly. The 2nd pic is another nice bird that flies well. I also have a Stinger 64 still in the box awaiting attention.....one of these days.

Those are two sexy birds. I've been trying to resist buying both of them for a while (successfully, thus far...)

OK, here I go again! Deep breath.....

F4d-1 Skyray from HK:

F4D-1 Fighter Jet w/Brushlss EDF Plug-n-fly

In it's stock form, with that huge wing, it's a floater. It'll just go a little faster than a HZ SC. I used to laugh and say this thing could be a trainer! 2 cuts of the plastic cosmetic exhaust (Which you won't see dur to the wing extensions) and 2 screws, you can change out the edf. The ESC is under a tacked on thin plastic strip and a zip tie under the belly for easy access. Cut a little foam in the nose and you go from room for the stock 1300 3S to my current 2200 4s. I went from stock setup, to a better 3s fan w/2200 3s batt, to my current aluminum shroud fan w/2200 4s. She handles the weight easily. Now she'll go straight up to like 200 feet from takeoff(Really, takeoff and continue rotation to go straight up!), has impressive, but not quite 100mph , speed(Maybe 50 to 60ish mph, just guessing), and you can still do super slow high alpha passes and floating, almost no roll-out, landings.

There are a few recommended changes in cg and adjustments to the landing gear to get her to fly nice, covered here. I also put better magnets on the canopy, as the stock ones seemed weak, and that and a strip of velcro are all that's holding in your battery. (Never heard of a loss in flight!) One weak point is the plastic nose-cone. Mine is currently held together with a bit of tape, but you hardly notice while having that huge grin on your face when flying! And I quit bashing on the nose as I got used to her.

So there's my suggestion. They don't come much cheaper, though the shipping cost sucks, and I guess her looks are love-it or hate-it, but as a fan of the early jet era, I think she's a gem!

Interesting model and indeed cheap. Full scale had a very short life span as a high altitude interceptor. Later designated as the F-6. Would be great to find a cheap scale looking F4J Phantom II(Go Navy !). I built a "prop in the slot" version but the good looking edf's are out of my price range.

What did you decide to go with or are you still looking for options?

How cheap is cheap? The 50mm Skyangels series from Jpowers is cheap and modable. You might want to go to Dons Wicked site and work backwards. He supplies hop-up motors and fans . Many have gone with his 6000kv set-up for 4S. Do want a 64mm. 70mm, 90mm ? http://www.donsrc.com/cart/

Then you have the Fish special- The ubiquitous Stinger ! Great reviews.

Great link dahawk. I knew Dons Wicked setups but never knew what to purchase but he has made a thread at RCG to help with options for all kinds of setups

There is another possibility ... I'm one who always looks for the budget answer ...

I love the BaE HAWK which was then licenced to McD to produce the T45 ... where nose shape and a couple of mods were made resulting in a slower aircraft but suited to US reqt's.

So I wanted a T45 that was larger than the 50mm job but still good flyer and able to take modifications ... I found the basic ARF on Hobby King at $29.99 .... the Lanyu T45 with 64mm fan unit already fitted.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Jet_Kit_.html

I was concerned that maybe such cheapo would be a waste ... but in fact it turned out to be an excellent flyer ... even on the factory spec'd 3S pack. "Alishanmao" on youtube demo'd it flying in a football stadium ... showing of it's parkfly capability.
I soon upped to 2200 3S .... still with recc'd motor of 4200kv and the stock fan. This baby took it without complaint.

I fitted : Turnigy EDF motor 4200kv, Tge9 Turnigy servos later elevator servo replaced with two 4.5gr servos at rear with direct links. 3s 2200 and 4S 2700 LiPos Zippy Compacts.

Later mods were to split elevators to separate servos mounted at rear - removing the cabin mounted servo and weight ... allowed me to then fit a 4S 2700 pack .... still on the 4200kv motor and stock fan.

It uses the older style single aileron servo with torque rods - means no snagged stripped servo gears in grass landings ... (I left of the supplied landing gear and belly land).

I've been flying mine now for about a year and I love it ... here are vids of it :

3S 2100 standard Turnigy LiPo

4S 2700 Zippy Compact

Hand launching is easy ... she literally flies out of hand ...

Speed ? slow to blow me down !! ... on 4S she has clocked 140+ kph with the recc'd 4200kv and stock fan.

Compared to SAPAC T45 ... this is just a few mm smaller and lighter .... and a lot cheaper !!
