A couple of months ago I got my slow stick and took my time building it. Some guys at the field helped me build it and test it for airworthiness...

I am proud to say I have soloes and am up and flying every chance I can get.

What came with my package- bought off ebay... 2409-12 brushless motor. 2cell lipo 7.4v, tx, 20amp esc and a big ol 11inch prop.

I purchased a couple of 3 cell 11.1v 1300 mah lipos and was only getting about 5 minute flight on them. Asking the guy at the field...the prop subject came up. A good guy named Gregg put an amp meter on the 2cell with big prop and I was pulling the required 12amps (how did he get that number?). when we put the 3cell on with the big prop, I was pulling about 27 amps....I almost burned out the motor and esc. Witht he 3cell we put on a 9x5 ep and pulled 12amps- just right for the 3cell and lipo. Also with this setup I now fly about 10 - 15 minutes and the battery does not get warm.

Can anyone re-explain the amps vs. prop vs. volts vs motor? Gregg did a great job...but I retained only about 10%. Nobody told me I had to think in this hobby! I thought there was a chart out there that you could go by.

BTW, I put on the new millenium landing gear on my SS...and it looks great and flys great. It kinda looks like a real plane now.

I am not sure what to upgrade to next....any suggestions? how about the millenium ss x?

I have no insight regarding your power/prop dilemma, however, if you're around any water whether it be ponds or lakes I'll recommend jimsp's Flying Boat Kit

I think it looks great and although I haven't built mine yet, I've read Great reviews of the kit and its flyworthyness.

And for a cheaper alternate wing choice, check out Stevens AeroModel. Again, I hear great things.

I was just a grunt in the Army once upon a time. If I had good vision back then I would still be in flying helos instead of pounding the ground and that ugly brown sand in SWA.

I did, however, get to jump out of perfectly good airplanes....those were the days!

Not sure which motor the plane in your link comes with, but either one (EPS100C or EPS300C Power System shown) won't last too long with a 3S Lipo battery.

Why not go with a brushless motor?

The battery capacity (900 mAh) in your link will be a little weak for that plane. You won't get much flying time. I'd suggest something between 1500 - 2200 mAh.

The SS airframe will carry just about anything you put on it.

The ESC will be okay.

Would you be willing to order from Hong Kong? If so, there are some good combos and nice batteries that can be recommended.

If you end up being gifted that exact Slow Stick, then it will come with an ESC for its BRUSHED motor. It has a brushed motor (either a 100 or 300) hooked up to a gear box. Your battery will work fine with that setup for a little while, although it will be a rather weak plane.

EDIT* Sir Raleigh beat me to it. The 11.1V Lipo will wear out the stock motor fairly quickly.

If you have a say in what you get for Christmas, change your request to the NPS (No Power System) version of the plane, that way you can add your own electronics.

I started with this Setup: 2410-09Y, 18A ESC from HeadsUpRC, with a 2200mah 3S and it offered plenty of power, and a decent climbout.

Then I moved to this Setup: 2836-09, 20A ESC with the same batteries, and it will take the Slow Stick vertical, with plenty of thrust leftover.

Jeff and Headsuprc is a great great help, ships very quickly, and will ship anything and everything for only $2... no matter how large your order. Highly recommended...

Not a problem at all. A receiver would be the only thing you'd be missing. EDIT* And 2 servo's

Being new to RC, I have to ask... do you already own a Radio? If you do, great. Just get a receiver and a crystal with a channel that matches that of your radio. If not, then you have some more shopping to do, because unfortunately, the Slow Stick does not come with one.

This Corona Rx is one that I use regularly, and own multiple. They work very well for 72mhz. Again, HeadsupRC carries them, thus saving you the trouble of shopping elsewhere and paying more shipping etc.

The Hitec Laser 4 is a good 4ch starter radio if you don't already own one. It's what I started with, and again, had no problems.

There are many differing opinions on Radio's, and many avenues you can take ranging from inexpensive to outrageous: 4ch, 6ch, 8ch, 72mhz, 2.4ghz, computer, non-computer. It all comes down to how much you can afford and how much you're willing to plan ahead. You can start w/ a cheap 4ch, but in the future if you start to own multiple and larger planes with more channels, then a more expensive radio will be necessary.

I definitely recommend the 2410-09Y BL motor from HeadsUpRC.

I also recommend getting the multi-fit prop saver:

It will prevent a lot of broken props and bent motor shafts.

I've tried this motor with a 2S LIPO, but honestly it's much better with a 3S (1200-2200mAh). And don't forget to get a decent LIPO battery charger. Jeff at HeadsUpRC has a few different models available.

I fly my Slo-V with the same motor. I normally use the 1147 prop, but I swap in the 1170 for a bit more speed on windy days or just to have fun...

Dang it, computer crashed and I have to rewrite this!
I began scratchbuilding a Cub for my first rc plane a few months ago and I am half done with it. I bought the Hitec Laser 4 with the O5S reciever and 2 HS-55. I think that I will learn to fly on the slow stick, so I don't destroy the balsa Cub on the first flight. I will save the HS-55s for the cub and use other servos for the SS.

Actually, the link you posted is for the Motor/ESC combo which is a bit cheaper than buying separately. No need to purchase the Mag 8 ESC you list further down the page... that'll save some $$$.

You will also need to purchase a set of 3.5mm bullet connectors to connect the motor to the ESC. I prefer connectors, but you could just connect the motor directly.

I would use GWS 1147 'slow fly' props if you are just starting out:

The 1170's are nice for speed, but you don't need them. The stock SS wing will not hold up at the higher speeds if not reinforced.

I think that I will just solder on the bullet connectors, and this is what I am asking for as a gift, so I don't want to get too much extra. Unless I get a heli instead.

One final suggestion, start reading the slow stick threads. There are lots of great tips about construction, reinforcing the wing, setup, etc.

The 2410-09Y and 1147 prop is a proven setup. The SS will take off in 5ft or less then climb steeply out. Makes the stock EPS300 look weak by comparison. You will really enjoy it.

Do you have to cover the bottom of the SS wing?

No, but you can cover it. To do so improves the handling in wind (a bit), BUT you must make the front and back of the wing the same height. If not it balloons (noses up) under power badly.

You give up the extreme floaty feel in light conditions - assuming you haven't already succumbed to grotesque amount of motor and battery.

I noticed that I would need a t-connector for the ESC, and I think that the combo above would be a good idea then. If I were to select a charger from HURC, then which one would be the best?

Would I need anything else to connect the prop to the shaft?

Lipo chargers follow the same rule as radios, buy the best you can afford. A few things you will want to look for:

- Ability to select the charge rate. Most Lipo batteries are charged at the same rate (or lower) than thier capacity: 1500mAh = 1500mA or 1.5A charge rate.
- Built in cell balancer. It will aid in properly charging your batteries and extend thier life.
- You will also need a 12VDC power supply for home charging. If you haven't already noticed, most chargers are powered by 12VDC so they are suitable for charging in the field via a car battery.

The XCharger B6 and GTPower P4 would meet these criteria. You can purchase the 12VDC power supply from HeadsUPRC as well.

The prop saver I mentioned above comes with a rubber O-ring to attach the prop. Nothing else is required:

Go with the GT Power, or the X Charger. I haven't tried the GT Power, but if it's listed on HURC, i can only imagine it'll work well.

The Power up balance charger will work, however it'll take many many hours to charge a battery of the capacity you're looking to buy.

I own the X Charger, and have Zero complaints. It can do all the things Philipa mentioned.

EDIT* It looks like Both chargers have those capabilities
