But would that explain the slow drift where the heli was ok for the first few minutes them progressively went right more and more? And all the more unlikely why it would do exactly the same thing...

There is probably a routine to re calibrate the accelerometers that are the 4th 5th and 6th 'g' in a 6g system. .. But how you do it I've no clue.
