Years ago I had a bad leak start under a bathroom sink while I was out of town for three days ! I was living alone then, now if the wife and I leave overnight the water gets cut off.

I’m not arguing their decision to cancel the event, but when I flew for a living I learned early on not to cancel a flight until hours before (unless it was a hurricane) because you just never know....
