Steve:....I did in fact obtain a Spektrum..........I installed it in my new WW1 model ( Brio 10 ) :D .....I have been a little tied up with the precision flying and a couple of contests lately, but tried it out this AM.....feels not too bad....I just need to make /build in an expo function for the rudder, and I think it could be used for my larger models too.
I like the fact that it's super easy to figure out the programming functions...I can pretty much run it without the manual, except for the part where I wanted dual rates for the rudder, and the throttle hold function. also noticed that the " expo" function will only deaden the center, and won't make it more sensitive. This might seem like a disadvantage, but I have never used reverse expo on any of my models.
I do like the differential option for the ailerons.....It sure makes it easy to setup the ailerons to get rid of either adverse yaw, or help keep rolls from getting that annoying little wiggle that costs points...
Re building...this year I think I'm going to do a British model..either a Camel or a Pup...I haven't decided.... I have 6 models on the wait list, and should get them done over the next few months...I didn't buy any of them...it seems that every time I turned up at a contest or fly in I won another one......I'm not complaining though cause as the " boss" says, it keeps costs down :rolleyes: I sure like the looks of that Hangar 9 Camel...it's tempting...I sold my BIG triplane this fall ..it is 7 years old, and I no longer have the hours to devote to flying it, and storage is becoming an issue, and a fellow made me an offer that was just too good to refuse...he basically said...name your price...so I did.....He almost broke his wrist he handed me the money so fast. I think I'll be staying with the less than 1/3 sized models for a while. They're a lot easier to transport, and I can get more than one in the Jimmy . Gotta get back to work now...who's building what this winter???

I'm glad you're enjoying the Spektrum Ron. I LOVE mine!!! It is probably the best RC investment I've made in a long time!! I know it works in my .25 size triplane. It is really easy to program. There is supposed to be info on www.horizonhobby.com to tell you how to get rudder expo if you haven't already. I don't know what to do next. I still need to wrap up my little triplane. I have a DVII, DR1, DVIII, tripehound, and other assorted planes to work on. I think Martin wants to do a long distance simultanious build on the DVIII's. That's probably what I'll start next when the weather here gets a little cooler. I sent Martin a Airhog Aeroace and he's been flying it in his front yard so he's getting some flight time in! We really don't have any active clubs in my area anymore so I usually either fly alone or with one of my kids. Sometimes my boss and I fly but he doesn't like to get up as early as I do on our days off. That's okay though because alot of times it's really peaceful at dawn with just the hum of an electric outrunner!! I think I'm gonna stick to 1/6th scale and smaller because of storage also. I like that Hangar 9 Camel too but it will cost a small fortune to electrify it!!! Electrifly is making a SE5A ARF and will soon release a Fokker DVII ARF. They are both builtup balsa parkflyers that might be fun for a quick flight fix!!! I really liked your big tripe!! Kinda sad to hear ya let her go!! Steve.

Steve, just say the word when you want to start on the DVII build. :) I'm itching to do my DVIII. I haven't decided on a camo scheme, but I think I'll definitely do the five color camo (yeah, I know I'm asking for it!). :D I want something unusual so I'll need to do some in depth research first. BTW, if you are even thinking about putting anything red on that DVIII, I'll come down to Texas and beat you till you bleed! :eek: No red DVIIIs ever existed for your information, thank you very much!! Steve, remind me again about what you picked out for the power plant. I need to start thinking about obtaining one in the next few weeks. I assume you will be using LIPOs. Let me know what you have decided too. OF COURSE I shall be using my NEW FUTABA 7C computer radio for the guidance system! You know Boys, the one you Guys are jealous about not picking. :) :D Walt speak to us. What's next? Well gotta get some building done. Martin

I'm not ready to start the DVIII yet Martin. I'm hoping work will slow down after about a month!! But I probably will use my Eflite Power 25 outrunner in it with my Eflite 40amp ESC. I will probably also use two TP1320mah lipos wired parallel for batteries. This setup works great in my Polks DR1 with a APC 12x6 prop (not the slow flyer type). I'm pretty sure the DVIII will be lighter auw than the DR1 is!!! I may just put one of the WWI surviving pilots tripe schemes on it. Kind of a "what if" type of deal. The way I understand it there were so few of these in service that they probably all looked pretty much the same. The war ended their service time too quickly for much personalization. Well better go hang out with the family. Steve

I call it a phokker. I would have liked to put a square cowl on the front but I didn't have one and I didn't want to try to build one for a styrofoam airplane.

Question regarding bare wood finishes
I am building a 1910 Antoinette, and I know most early stick & fabric aircraft were stained and varnished as a wood protectant. Has anyone used stain on their wood models before in lieu of paint, and has it worked out? I wouldn't imagine that it weakens balsa, but I would rather learn from someone else, if it does!

Welcome to the best thread on WF Curtis! :) I have heard other modelers used stain on their aircraft before with no adverse problems. Another modeler used tea bags to stain his wood too. :cool: Try staining a small piece of wood to see what happens. I have this kit also, but have not gotten around to building it yet. The indoor site I want to use is way too small for this plane. :( Good luck with the build. Martin

I found a video of the Antoinette being flown outside (that I can't find again, dangit!), and from what I saw it is a very slow flyer. You could practically walk alongside it. Now, with pico-sized gear half the weight of the suggested Maxx & MPI stuff, and a small li-po at less then half the weight of the suggested pack it would probably crawl even slower at cruise.

And besides...that plane is just damned pretty!

Look up the Shuttleworth Collection. I have a video of the Hind bipe being flown and at the end, they show a short flight of an Antoinette. PM me your e-mail if you can't find it and want me to send it to you.

Sig Antoinette videos

As I posted elsewhere, they are the same aircraft, and the builder implemented wing warping, but I think he created the situation where he had to. He had actually extended the wing span nearly ten inches total to make it "more scale." Problem is that the Antoinette already has a LOT of yaw dampening dihedral. By extending the wings he made them flex upward even more in flight (you can see how much they flex up in the videos), adding even more dihedral. His turn radius was over 100 feet, and that is when he decided he needed help and put in the wing warping.

I suspect that if he had kept the wings as Sig intended (probably why they didn't build them to scale dimensions. "If Sig had intended for us to have 58" wings, he would have given us 58" wings!) his plane would have normal stability in the yaw axis and wouldn't have had the turning issues. Still, if I could see how he did the wing warping I, too, might be tempted to have more scale-like wings!

I notice that a number of aircraft from the Shuttleworth Collection were used in "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines."

I KNEW there were some places I missed in England! Instead I had to drive to stupid Dartmoore and see stupid ponies...

Curtis...I've seen that model up close and personal at our indoor fly in.

it's a real dandy...wing warping works great as long as you are not in a hurry to turn :-) but it gets the job done, and it is quite impressive in the air........

i am just trying to make up my mind on the next secret project..the EV is flying fairly well, and I think I'm gonna keep her for now ... maybe a Camel is in the works, I think I've just about run out of Fokkers to build....unless you count the twin engine twin boom fighter AF designed and built long before the P 38 was built, but then that's not a WW1 plane. But it's still a Fokker. Hmmmmm I DO have the three views, and a couple of pictures,and the pencil is all sharpened up, and the drawing board is clear, and the building bench is open..........

Winter build
Well Boys, I haven't decided what to build for the winter yet. :confused: It's a toss up between about three WWI planes. I think I'd like to build my 22" DARE Sopwith Pup for indoor first. :D That way Steve and I can both do a simultaneous build on the Ben Buckle DVIIIs. :D Steve tells me he is delayed, so I'm waiting on him. I did find a source for small RC equipment local to me for the Sopwith though. I just have to save a few bucks to buy it (http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=V815101). I also have a couple of kits and a scratch build I started. It's horrible..... :D :D :D which one do I pick????? :confused: LOL! :) Speak to me Boys! What's on your workbench??? Martin

guys, i am in talks with a manufacturer that will turn ww1 plans into ARFs.

i need 5 people minmum to committ to purchase for them to do a plane.

im wanitng to do the Peter Rake Fokker DVIII in 45inch span...

anyone interesed or wanting to comment?

I have a DV111 , so I don't think that one's in the cards...however the D V11 or even dare I say .....SE5A might be good.....I haven't started on anything yet, and nothing has really jumped out and said to me that it has to be built......but then it's not the end of December yet...usually I start the " new project" between Christmas and New Years Eve. This year time has been an issue (as it seems it has with everyone)...gotta get some bench time, or I will forget how to build.
Steve...the DX6 is a great little radio..I even am using it on some of my larger models, and have not had "range issues" yet. I can see the DX 7 likely being the next must have radio for a lot of guys...it's just so nice being able to not worry about frequency conflicts or glitches when you are flying. Weatherman brought us a truckload of snow last night..about 6 inches, so I guess I'll have to make skis for my model, or wait till it's gone.

I could possibly be interested in a ARF DVIII. How much ya gonna charge for 'em Tim? Ron, I really like my DX6 too!! I told you it was a good investment!!
