Pat

I have the Eflite Jenny and 2 Nieuports. They are flimsy and light. Brace wires are needed. My Jenny will loop and do rudder rolls. I did X bracing on every bay and have a bamboo skewer on the bottom wing of the Jenny. On all planes I did not install servos where shown but installed them with pull-pull controls. I think this saves weight at the tail and looks more scale, also on the Jenny it takes care of the problem with the rudder breaking where the control rod attaches. I built the first Nieuport with just brace wires, changed front wires to match a 17(I don't think the kit matches either a 17 or 11). When I pulled the brace wires tight the bottom wing bowed so I add a bamboo skewer to it. The other Nieuport had the top wing mashed in shipping(I bought both with shipping damage). I coated the top wing with white glue, added a CG strip as a spar, and added a CF rod at the front bottom edge. This made the wing stiff again. The fuselage is thin and will crush if you sqeeze it too hard. I like the way they fly, very slow and relaxing. Landing can be made with almost no forward roll. I am thinking of trying to get a SE5A to go with them. Maybe trade one of the Nieuports to someone that bought 2 of the SE5As like I bought the Nieuports.

E-Flight Nieuport 17

Yes, it is a flimsy plane, especially the wings. One problem I had with mine is that because of the V-shaped interplane struts it is very easy to mount the top wing with some warp in it. You really have to be careful of this. However, if everything is straight it is a great flyer. Do not let its flimsiness discourage you - it is a very worthy aeroplane.

My Wattage Camel is getting close to needing a rebuild. I want to redo it in something different than the green most are painted. Here are some pictures I am thinking of following for a different paint job.

Wow, those are some stunning paint schemes on those camels! LOVE those. The black really makes them pop.

Ron 10-29-2009 11:44 PM

Floss the pics you sent are somewhat the same as the ones I have, but the top wing on my three view is different....the tips and root are kinda mustard yellowy colour..the panels where the crosses are on the top wing...are OD...and the streaking on the fuselage is not diagonal, it's straight up and down...vertical...and the crosses are a little different....the streaking on the wings is also straight from LE to TE.....but they all agree the cowl is RED hmmm....so is the landing gear and wheels.
Marty..some of those schemes you sent are causing some consternation here...I may need to rethink my paint scheme Hmmmm...or build more than one model...... I have the fuse framed up, sheeted on the sides...ready for top decking, wing mounts, LG hard points and firewall.tail feathers completed, and mid wing almost completed.......man this thing is gonna be B I I I I G G G ..... firewall to end of rudder is 6 feet......horizontal stab is 3 ft wide.....here's the funny part...mid wing is 8 ounces...fuse is 10 so far, and framed up tail feathers is 5 ounces......wonder how much it's gonna weigh when it's finished????? and I wonder how I'm gonna do the streaking?? If it was lozenge, there would be no problem, but I have never seen or heard of a lozenge Dr1.......If I could find one, that would be my choice. Oh yeah Marty..I was gonna put my family coat of arms on the side of my Pup...that is until my wife found out it comprises a hammock and a can of beer :-)

degreen60 10-30-2009 07:05 PM

HELP, the group meetings here are not helping. I am just now finishing a rebuild of my M8 and Fokker DVII. Both have ailerons and took more skill to fly than I had at the time and I crashed them. Now a year later I think my skill has gained to where I can fly them. I have a Dr1 to finish, I am getting ready to cut out of foam a Bristol Bullet M1, and have the plans cut out for a Junkers D1. My wife thinks I am hopeless, I guess after 40 years she should know.

I am planing on using a red, white, and blue checker board scheme on my Bristol Bullet M1. Thinking more of using the Camel with the large red design on the side.

The are 2 Moraine in the picture. The I is a built up Peter Rake model someone started and modified with ailerons. I finished the model.

The N is a JR Models made in the Czech Republic. It is foam and a real floater. Here is my build thread. http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46180

Ok here are some pics of a plastic kit in LvR's livery. The top wing is all yellow in this version, it may have been both as colour schemes were often added too and altered over time. The plastic modelling boys are good to get colour schemes off because they put a lot more research into this stuff then we ever will. They can be bothered because there is very little chance that their masterpiece will be dashed into the ground at 30Kph ;)

Ron 11-02-2009 08:45 PM

Well...I started to mount wings this last weekend. I have the bottom and mid wings done, and now can make the mounts in the fuselage for them, and do the cabane struts for the top wing when it's built. I decided to have a look at the Williams Bros style vintage wheels in 1/3 size, and was shocked to see that they weigh 20 plus ounces each ::o guess I'm gonna have to make some wheels. and I guess we'll need a pair of 1/3 sized Spandaus....I'm actually really amazed at how quickly this has gone to this stage...ten days of evenings, and I'm starting on the last major piece of the build...all the little nitty things take all the time ...seems you get things framed up fast, then the little stuff takes forever. I figure once the model is framed up, it's about 25% done.

I think I make models of your models, lets see my Dr1 fuselage is 21 inches long so that make my model amost 1/3 scale. HAHA

The deal of a lifetime

Boys, I am going to offer the deal of a lifetime. I have in my possesion a complete 1/4 scale FOKKER DRI kit ala Nick Zoroli and a framed up 1/4 scale Fokker DRI airframe ala Nick Zoroli that I need to move out of my shop. :) These 2 (plane/kit) take a 2.0 CID gas engine or large glow motor. The airframe has been stripped(not all of it) to gain access to the airframe for repairs which I completed. The framed up airframe is too large to ship :{ but the kit can be shipped :). I also have a RYOBI 2.0CID motor converted for RC use (new, never run) available. :) BTW, I have the plans for the DRI I will throw in with the kit. I had at one time considered flying this big bird but now am only interested in smaller stuff. PM me if anyone is interested or pass this on to someone who may be interested. I will make you a deal you can't refuse. PS pics on demand. Also may be persauded to swap for some items I need/use. Marty

That's too funny! And yes, we're different. No quitters here, we fall down, and get back up for another flight.

btw, Hi! My name's Chris. I'm addicted mostly to biplanes. I've thought about dabling with a monoplane, but haven't found an "enabler" yet.

Thank you sir!

It started out as a Cedar Hobbies ARF. It was a pile. Very un-scale shape, and heavy for it's size. It had NO access to the inside for gear, or even a battery. I had to build a hatch on the top where the engine is. I had also originaly re-shaped the nose, it also was very poorly done, very un-scale.
I pretty much learned aileron on that plane, and it was a bad one for it. After a couple good crashes, I decided to completely re-build it.

Everything aft of the hatch was rebuilt just using photos and "3-views". Wings were a file sent to me by Peter Rake (very nice guy), and I re-scaled them, and gave them to a budy who lazer cut them.

Whole plane is covered in Silkspan and Dope. Lozenge was made by puting the tissue on a sheet of paper, and sending it thru the printer.
Fuse is just painted to look like woodgrain. Landing gear is sprung like the real plane, as is the tail skid. Cabane Struts and landing gear is made of Carbon tubing. Interplane struts are balsa with 1/64 ply inside.
Engine and exhaust is depron foam.

All controls, including ailerons, are pull/pull. Single servo with built in differential on ailerons.

Still need to mount a windshield, and put in a paper instrument panel - some day.

WS 32"
AUW (IIRC) 16oz w/ battery.

Thanks! I think I did this one about 1 year ago. Not really a true Gypsy, I did just the nose. The wings are still swept back like a Tiger Moth.

Here's a zoom of the nose. It was made from a 2 liter pop bottle.
I keep thinking I need to "finish" this one. Needs some lettering on the wings, and the un-authentic wood color on the cabanes needs to go away.
