Mine has the same running gear as the HOB P47 kit I converted... Ultrafly FRIO 10. It's my first time flying a Biplane, so other than the reading I've done here I didn't quite know what to expect.... I like it better, must be the drag of the extra bits... I'm converted.. BTW it was very pleasant out at the park at daybreak in shorts and a t shirt with no wind to speak of..hehe..:D

If it is too pleasant there I will send you some of the little black bugs we started getting about this time of year about 3 years back. There was little wind today and I tried flying 3 times but cut each flight short because of them getting through my mosquito net. They get so thick in front of my face it distracks from watching the plane. At least they only last about a month and then will be gone.

Hehe... I was dancing to the tune of horseflies (called March Flies here) latching onto my ankles and feet yesterday ... but that was only while i was flying my ladies MM Cessna 180... would have been pretty funny to watch. Today I didn't forget the repellant.

I might have to take the plunge, now that my DVII has flown nicely and proven itself as other than a shelf queen, and dirty it up a bit... needs some matt treatment.. I too am not overly fond of the amount of red on the GP DVII, but I'll leave it to beaver until something evil happens or I get the urge to tear the covering off a really nice plane. I'd post some pics but at the moment it looks just like everyone elses apart from the spacing forward of the cowl to get the FRIO in nicely due to its inbuilt cooling fins. I'd like to do more scale looking rocker gear and exhaust for it... always liked the look of the Albatross in this regard too.. but you cant really see any of it when it's dogfighting the hawks.

You need a net to fly? :confused: I heard there's BIG bugs in Texas (don't they grow everything big in Texas ?). Must be those Texicans are especially sweet to eat, although I heard some of them are kinda tough. :eek: Anyway, I now have 9 planes ready to fly with 4 maidens and 3 re-maidens to go. I'm back after a long break due to health, retirement, health, a move, health.

Here's a few pics of a BUSa M1a that i just finished. Power is an Aveox 36/38/3 geared 2.5/1, swinging an 18/8 prop on a 6S2P A123 pack at just under 30 amps. Great flyer; better than my other WWI birds.

Before you flame me on the color scheme here's my story. My avatar shows that I like "different, but authentic" color schemes. Well S/S Pubs show the M1 in black and white, but a Google search took me to another site (duxford???) that showed M1s in colors I had never seen Far to complex to do for a sport scale everyday flier. But they showed this a/c in Red and white. The author argued that if you look at the grayscale of the center circle in the insignia, which is a known shade of red, and compare it to the strips they are the same, but different from the known color of the tailfin lettering.

Take or leave it, but I've got one highly visible M1a (-:

PS my new field is asphalt, but I couldn't do away with the tailskid, so I put a very tiny wheel in the skid and made it two pieces so it steers. Works great.

Noone will "flame" you here. As a historian I like your defense of th color scheme. It is as plausible as any "in the books". Trying to prove colors in B&W photo is impossible. Even written descriptions can be in error, esp. second hand accounts. What is the difference between "cream" and "kakhi" and "yellowish" and "light brown" as used in 1916 London vs 1917 Paris? No one knows. All history is an educated and very biased guess, and quite often dead wrong. I would back your color scheme as much as any other "derived" colors.

Do you guys have any advise or comments on the Albatross D.III EP 40"? I am thinking about getting it as my first WWI aircraft.

Love your tailskid, that wheel is a nice idea that's not even noticeable.

ps - I just recently went thru this issue of trying to figure out color from a black and white. I learned from a gentleman on http://www.theaerodrome.com/ that many of the old pictures would show blue as VERY light. Actually would look almost WHITE in photos. So, your plane may have been blue, or really any color. Who knows, maybe even blue and red, with no white! Gotta build it the way you like it.

I am diggin' the M1 Walt!! There is no telling how many crazy color schemes the pilots had in WWI!! But I do like the RED especially!! How 'bout it Marty? Isn't the RED cool? I love pickin' on him!! Steve

I stop by to see what is going on here once in a while. I always see such nice planes here. I have been busy building other type planes from different eras. I did a nice flying day on Memorial Day weekend with 8 planes. 2 of them are WWI era and I posted pictures of them here some time ago. I got a couple of movies of my Fokker Dr-1 Tri and Eindekker E-IV in flight. Nothing unusal in flight but a nice flight none the less. I discovered a new place to put my videos so I tried it out. Been flying RC planes for almost a year and a half, thought "Yea, this would be fun. Charge and fly, charge and fly, how simple is that." Simple my a**! Along the way there is tons of stuff to learn and this 3 hrs of repair for 10 minutes of flight... (have some good flying days once in a while though) But I'm still with it and am wondering about a biplane. This one looks nice http://secure.hobbyzone.com/search/EFL1950.html I like "Flyboys" and the plane looks nice but that's one side of my brain talking, the other half says it's only 8 ounces and a slow flyer meant to be flown indoors. Bottom line is I would like to try a biplane and wonder what you guys would recomend as a first biplane. ARF is good, as long as there isn't a lot of modeling to do (can barely draw a crooked line, much less a straight line). Would fly it outdoors only but on calm days 3-5 mph winds max, use an asphalt parking lot (or well groomed baseball diamond) as a runway and have about a 1200 by 400 foot open field. Should a first bipe be something like a Pitts and then move over to WWI planes or would starting out with a WWI bipe be OK? Everyone seems to have different opinions on favorite planes but everyone seems real knowledgable on the topic of WWI bipes, any links you could throw my way would be most appreciated.
PS Oh, would like foam for now.

WWI Bipe.
If you want 4 channel, the Great Planes Se5a flys really easy.
I have had mine for a couple years now.
It is very easy to assemble.
BUT.......it is a balsa airplane.

Also,
Not a WWI plane.
I have the Great Planes Ultimate Biplane EP.
That one is about the easiest Biplane to fly and Land that I have ever had!!

So depending on what you like, there are many options out there.

Do you want (need) a plane with only 3 channels? (no ailerons, only rudder turns).
Or do you feel comfortable with 4 channel? (ailerons and rudder turning)?

If you only want 3 channel, you probably won't go wrong with the Eflite Nieuport like you linked. I have the Jenny of the same style, and I'd consider it a great first plane (if you have enough dihedral).

Since you mentioned you don't want to build I'm reluctant to mention, but what the heck.
The GWS Tiger Moth is THE best flying biplane available - if we're talking simple 3 channel foamies. Tons of info about those, and most here have at least one. Only issue is you have to sort of build them - glueing the sides together, and glueing the struts on straight is a challenge for some. But it's a GREAT first biplane, or first plane in general. You have to TRY to crash them.

I agree with 7car7. I have both the GWS Pica Tiger Moth and the Eflite Jenny. If you get the GWS Tiger Moth buy the slope one without power and put a brushless motor in it. Both the Tiger Moth and the Jenny will need brace wires on the wings. If you want ailerons then the Great Planes SE5A should be good. I learned to fly ailerons with mine, also it is the first plane I landed in my backyard without flipping up onto its nose. Tiger Moth and Jenny being foam are easer and quicker to repair than the SE5A, ask me how I know. HAHA

Thanks much for the quick replies. The Jenny looks most likely, the SE5A looks more scale (looks more like a WWI bipe should, in my mind) and the Tiger Moth, that name has popped up all over, got a big following. TM-Jenny, TM-Jenny...

From reading the threads I think the Tiger Moth is easer to trim to fly 3 channel than the Jenny. I bought my Jenny used from a person that did not like the way it flew. I read where some people have even add aileron control trying to get it to turn. I rebuilt mine before flying and it flys great. I have about 3/4 inch dihedral with max rudder throw. My Tiger Moth flew right off the building board so to speak.

But there is no red on that one Marty so how can it be a good plane? I've had a not so great week. My dad passed away Wednesday night and my mom passed away last weekend. But I guess it happens to everybody sooner or later. Just trying to get everything in order. Flew a little yesterday evening and it made some of the stress go away. What are you guys up to? Steve

Thanks alot guys!! I'm doing okay. Marty called tonight and talked with me for awhile and it helped alot. That's what I like about this site. Everybody cares about everyone else. Especially those of us in the WWI part. We tease each other but I've been "other" places and they get so nasty with each other sometimes. We don't call each other idiots or stupid or cuss each other. We spend our time helping each other and we always welcome new guys to our threads. I guess I just like how positive everyone is. Thanks guys for giving me a great place to hang out in my spare time. I'm particularly fond of the "leather" around the cockpit.
I made the rounded section from depron foam, then painted with acrylic, thickened with light weight spackle. After it was dry, I rubbed it with my greasy fingers ;-) to give it a bit of a worn look. Super easy, and fast.
