Latest plane

Hi guys, it's been kinda quiet in here, so I thought I'd mention my currrent project. Hope all of you are well.

Need to make a build thread, just haven't gotten around to it yet, perhaps letting the cat out of the bag will inspire me!

I am HEAVILY modifying a Great Planes SE5a.

I had a damaged set of wings, and a brand new fuse, so figured it was time to have some fun with it.

It is going to be much lighter than the original, and much more scale looking. I've even re-shaped the wings to have undercambered ribs.

Fuse is pretty much done, it's just about a full ounce lighter uncovered than it was before I modded it, but after stripping the stock covering. Can't recal at the moment, but the wings are a lot lighter too.

Anyway, just a tease for now, gotta load the pics.

Chris.

Hi Guys! I hope all is well! I recently attended a large flea market in Lebanon PA and came away with a great deal. I was strolling past BP Hobbies booth and spotted this N 17 ARF. I must say the workmanship was superb! The plane is all built up balsa from a laser cut kit. The only thing wrong is it's covered in transparent yellow!!! Of course the first thing I did was thank the Good Lord it didn't have any RED on it anywhere :D. Then my devious mind started to think of how I was going to turn it into a true WWI bird. ???? Then it hit me! I remembered an article I saved from MAN that told you how to repaint any film using a scotch guard pad and some spray paint. As we speak I am gathering the paint materials to repaint it. I am also in the beginning stages of planning and researching the correct markings. I certainly don't want some fake markings on this beauty!:D It would seem I fell into this one at the right time. :D I will post pics as soon as I can pry the camera from my Wife!:D Marty

Maybe you can paint it like this one. HAHA

What flee market is that? I am familiar with the "Green Dragon" in Lancaster but didn't know there was a market in Lebanon. Not to far from me for a weekend drive for bargains.

dbcisco 04-09-2009 05:39 AM

This one is just down the pike from me so I guess I have to go April 17th:

Flea market

DB the flea market I'm referring to is the Penn Modelers Flea market held in Lebanon PA the beginning of March every year (I've been going for over 20 Years). :) It kicks the flying season off for me every year. I always come away with something I can't live without (2 kits, and glue this year) :D. Put it on your calender for next year and I'll meet you there next year! BTW degreen I figured you would "volunteer to help me again". I suppose I asked for it!:D Marty

WWI Ace 04-19-2009 11:18 PM

Hey Marty!! The Germans had a plane that was almost an exact copy of the Nieuport remember, (Siemens)? You could always put some crosses on it and freak everyone out!!!! Steve

That's a great idea, and would be a simple inexpensive way to have a very unique plane. I'm sure someone will do it!

50+AirYears 04-20-2009 03:50 PM

Might want to look up the Siemans-SchuckertD-1 through D-3. While it had some superficial resemblance, being a sesquiplane, to the Nieuport, it may have had a shorter tail moment and a rounder fuse. Also, it had a spinner on the 4 bladed prop.

In fact, according to Google, it was actually copied from the Nieuport 17, but wasn't as succesful. Apparently, they had a rather complex geared rotary engine that gave problems during development, and really started to give problems when the Germans started to run out of castor oil and started to switch to what may have been a synthetic oil. Also, it had cooling problems with a more streamlined cowl than the Nieuport.

Marty, after making your Tiggie/Pfalz it should not be too hard for you to kitbash, as a model railroader would say, this plane into a Siemans.

My favorite word! Makes my inability to follow directions a noble quality:red:

I used to be a "hacker" until that word was stolen by the media and turned into describing a negative, if not criminal, avocation.

Boys I like the idea! :D As a matter of fact, I just so happen to have some German decals. :D It may be close enough to fake!:D I will give it some serious consideration (as long as it has no RED parts)! Marty

This one looks a lot more like a Nieuport but it has no red on it.

degreen60 04-21-2009 03:50 AM

Here is something I found "The success of the Nieuport series of fighters led the German Idflieg in 1916 to seek proposals from various German aircraft manufacturers for the development of a comparable sesquiplane fighter for the German air corps. The Siemens-Schuckert Werke (SSW), a German electrical and aeronautics concern, submitted a prototype known as the SSW D.I, which was a direct copy of the Nieuport 11." Make a D.I and you only have to paint and add the crosses. The red picture is a D.III, the other picture is a D.I

I haven't gotten around to reading all the books I have, but it seems there was alot of licensing of designs sold between firms on both sides defore and during the war. The Fokker Eindecker was a licensed Morane-Saulnier. Even Springfield armory had to pay royalties to Mauser for every M1903 rifle they made.

I think there was a lot of copying of airplanes without licensing. As fast as airplanes were changing a lot of copies were obsolete by the time they reached the front. I think this was the case with the Siemens being a copy of the Nieuport. Also the Fokker Dr1 being a copy of the Sopwith Triplane. There were better airplanes available than either of these copies when they reached the front. I do not know if the Nieuport was withdrawn from service before the Siemens reached the front but I do know the Sopwith tripe was withdrawn before the Fokker Dr1 reached the front.

Definitely. More copyright infringement during wartime. I still think it is amazing that many manufacturers uphold legal obligations across battle lines and it isn't considered treason (or aiding and abbetting).

Sorry, there's red on it!
Some of you I'm sure saw it, but here's a reminder...

degreen60 04-21-2009 04:56 PM

Here is where I found the pictures I posted. There are 2 D.I and 9 D.III http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/420

I look for paint schemes here for all my WW1 airplanes.

WWI Ace 04-23-2009 01:53 AM

Wow!! I really opened a can of worms with the Siemens comment!! I just thought that it would be something that you don't see at the field all the time. I didn't know that I was going to stir everyone up!! But thanks all for the great information and pictures!! Maybe we have inspired Marty a little!!! Steve

Great vid of WWI planes

Another great Youtube vid showing what we love best.

There's a Jenny, and even a full scale nose over! Just so we don't feel so bad when we nose over our little ones.

WWI Ace 04-27-2009 11:24 PM

That's some cool video!! Yeah, my nose overs don't make me feel so bad now!!! Steve

I found and bought a JR Models Morane Saulnier N on RCGROUPS. It arrived this morning. I searched the net but found nothing on this model. It is made in the Czech Republic. It is a foam model with 40 inch wing span.

7car7 04-28-2009 06:25 PM

That is too cool! I can't wait for a build thread on that one. Neat looking plane, and I really like the size.

Percyflyer 04-28-2009 07:02 PM

Was that a one of or was that one of those hobby shop sites that might have more?

I have emailed the person I bought the plane from to see where he got the plane and if he knows if there are more for sale. This is going to be an interesting build. The only instructions are exploded views with Czech writting. I will start a build thread and take lots of pictures starting with what came in the box.

dbcisco 04-28-2009 07:25 PM

Here's a link to JR Models http://www.jr-models.cz/.

Know anyone who can read Czeck ?

I had looked at this site before using a translator and could not find the Morane N.

Percyflyer 04-28-2009 08:12 PM

I also found that site, but, as you said, no Morane????

The person I bought it from answered my email. He picked it up at a swap meet. He thought maybe Hobby Lobby sold them years ago.

Hey Degreen!! Is it 3 channels or four? I hope one of your trees doesn't "eat" this one!!! Ha ha!!! Steve

It is 3 channel. I may have solved the hungry tree problem. Last tree that "eat" a plane still has the aileron servo with control rods and horns. Maybe they just needed something to chew on. LOL

WWI Ace 04-29-2009 12:08 AM

That is so funny!!!! Steve

Hi Guys,.... dont know if I'm in the right place here..(1st Post on your fabulous forum).. but I finally flew my GP D7 the last two mornings... have been waiting for the ground to harden up from the wet season here, after reading a fair bit about nose overs with this plane.... I shouldn't have worried it flew and landed like it was on rails.... had some fun with 5 Kite Hawks that came to have a look too.. they were very interested.. may have been hungry.. they didn't stand a chance against Manfred Von Vinkelflaffen. Cheers from Darwin, Northern Territory Australia.
