Comet DR1
 

Here are a couple more pictures of my Comet Superstars Fokker DR1. It is almost ready for first crash test, oops, test flight. If it flys good then it will get painted and other finishing touches. It amost blances at the COG shown on the plans without the battery installed. I should be able to get good COG without adding extra weight. If anyone already has this plane flying let me know where you have the COG.

The SE5a is back together and waiting to crash, oops fly again.

If your afaird to crash them don't fly them.

I still have 2 crash victims to repair, one from receiver failing and other from that dumb pilot that just don't seem to learn that he can't land in trees. HAHA

I see you like to mix foam and balsa. I am thinking of doing foam wings for my SE5 for flying and the covered balsa wings for show (or until I can fly it decently). I already did the meat tray tail feathers. Any thoughts anyone?

I like the built up wings cause I think they are a lot stiffer than foam. The foam I use as tail and controls is very stiff pink foam. I also use the pink foam to make wheels with paper spoke covers. The pink wing sub wing between the wheel is to see if it will hold up to landings or if it has to be replace often. If it holds up I will make a built up sub wing to replace it.

I need to make a new top wing for my DVII. I am going to use balsa for the spar, leading and trailing edges, and wing tips. I am going to see if I can use thin foam for the ribs.

Here is a couple of pics of a Dr1 with foam ribs etc, nice mix. I saved them to study and give it a go some day, the foam was from meat trays. A guy on RC groups built it, flew well too.

I see he uses sheet foam for tail and ailerons same as I did. I need to look through foam scraps and find foam about 1/16 inch thick cause the leading and trailing edge parts are notched for 1/16 inch ribs.

Rudder mixing
 

This last saturday I had the absolute JOY of flying all 4 of my planes in one morning. Never done that before.

GWS Tiger Moth
Eflite Jenny (ailerons)
GP SE5a
Albatros (scratch build)

I got a brand new radio with dual rates, expo, and mixing. I really enjoyed flying with the rudder mixing. Did this to all 3 of the aileron planes. What a difference. I had been using my left thumb to add rudder for coordinated turns, but having it automatic was an amazing difference.

The Albatros was especially nice to fly this way.
It makes me wonder if I should take out some differential, especially the SE5 - so I could have a more axial roll rate. (the mixing can be turned off by the flick of a switch).

Just makes me wonder, if the real biplanes ALWAYS use rudder to coordinate, or if it's an option. The planes were looking so scale, and slow flight was so much more stable and safe feeling. I'd sure recomend it to anyone with a WWI plane.

I'd be interested to hear others thoughts on rudder mixing.

I know I saw one designed for an OS .70 four stroke....a .40 size 2 stroke would be comparable. But I can't remember where. It was a kit though.

Chris, Steve you don't want that Proctor kit (VK) believe me! I owned this kit at one time as well as the built up plane. The kit was a lumber yard and DIFFICULT to build (over engineered). The plane was very fragile and easily broken. Buy the ARF instead. Martin

Walt, that's gorgeous! Very good job. Looking forward to hear how it flys. How much does it weigh with battery?

This is killing me. I really want a Spad as my next plane, but I can't decide between yours, or Great Planes, or a scratch build. If scratch build, it would be a 2 seater Spad XI. Really don't have the time for a scratch build, so that may have to be another time.
I really like the tan schemes for some reason, so that's what's making me shy away from the GP ARF.

Aerodrome SPAD VII
 

My SPAD VII weighs about 25oz with battery. It was a short kit. An early version and had some errors and incosistencies that I understand have been worked out. I wanted a SPAD XIII but at the time they did not offer a kit at the time. I plan to get the GP SPAD XII but I still may build one.

Here is a picture of my rebuild of top wing on my Fokker DVII using foam for the ribs. I cut the ribs out of the egg carton lids. They are the easiest ribs I have ever made and FREE. I had an old plywood master rib that I just laid on the foam and used a shart knife to cut around. No grain to worry about spliting. Next built up scratch I build will have all foam formers. I usally end up braking some of my formers along the grain when building my planes. Foam does not have that problem. A build up plane using foam and balsa should be strong.

I've gotta try one of those wings, looks nice and simple.

Using a mix of materials works best for me. Here is my scratch DIII being built with balsa, foam and ply from packing cases at work. You are so right with your comment on the grain, foam has none and is easy to work with, sands well too.

Excellent work Floss! The Albatros DIII is a wonderful subject to model. BTW, what plans are you using? I have 2 sets of plans for a DVa, small and large (1/4 scale!!). How did you manage the sheeting on the fuse? I like the use of foam bulkheads. I think I'll try it too. Keep us up to date on your build and please share with us your building techniques. Martin

I was confused.

There on the front of the magazine, was this three winged plane.

It had the black German crosses on it.

But I couldn't place it.

It was a sort of stripped green pattern on it.

It looked for all the world like a DR1, but it wasn't red.

When I read the cover, it claimed there was a story about the DR1 in the magazine. So I quickly flipped the pages to find this story.

When I got to the page it indicated, the DR1 was nowhere to be found, but here was this beautiful three winged plane, obviously german, but completely the wrong color.

They wrote the article with the images, as if they were talking about the DR1, but it just didn't ring true.


I did write a letter to the editor, letting them know, they either had the wrong plane pictured, or the images they had were ruined, and the colors were horribly off.

Everyone knows, every DR1 produced, was RED!

Yah. What's wrong with those guys? They must be color blind.

I just don't understand some of the articals I read about the DR1. Some of them claim when the plane was shipped to the front line it was painted a streaked green, now we all know this is wrong, they were all red.

One thing I do read about the DR1 that I think is a false claim it how great of an airplane it was. By the time it was built the Sopwith Tripe had been pulled from the front lines as obsolite. There were only 320 DR1 built cause they were obsolite when built. The DR1 is famous for getting the Red Baron killed, maybe if he had been flying his DVII that day he would have lived to the end of the war and the DR1 would be just another model of WW1 plane that not many were built. Over 2500 DVII were built.

It's a WoW response to your last posting..... and none of the children are being lied to.. :rolleyes: .. just subjected to false and misleading information (ie, all WWI planes a red). :mad: My airplane is not red.. BTW, which one of the pictures you posted is you? :D Martin
