Maybe after Christmas at latest...I generally get right on it when I'm building...gotta clear the bench for the "next project" :-) I've been exactly month on this so far, and it's about half done...or is that half baked.....all the major parts and pieces are made up....just making little bits and pieces now...like control horns, routing servo wires...the ones to the top wing are hidden in the struts....next time I have it all sorta put together, I'll post a pic.

I really need help. I have started building another WW1 plane. Here is the build thread. http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/show...733#post662733

Well...you give an old man a box of balsa, and a hand full of hard back razor blades, and look what he does...sorry the picture quality ain't that great, but it's what my camera takes.
|
Wow, that's big. Where will you store it?! I'm running out of garage ceiling space, and would have NO room for that beast. Looks good!
|
Store it ????
I intend to use it to give the cat flying lessons :p> I will find somewhere to put it...my 10X10 room has . ...1/4 sized D V111...1/4 sized tiggie, 1/4 sized Pup, 1/4 sized Cub, and a couple park flyers.....and now it looks like a DR1 needs to be squeezed in there so I have room to build another ::o just may need to sell a park flyer to make a little more room :D |
Doesn't the four 1/4's make a full size plane in that room? :D:D:D:D
|
THAT IS SO COOL RON!!! Steve

Just started to do the pull pull on all the control surfaces..rudder, elevators, and ailerons....Colin.I'll give you a turn at the sticks once she's maidened.....you will like it. The Dr1 flies like a Cub on steroids, but it has better ground handling manners than a Cub. degreen.my cat already has it figured out..he was in the shop checking it out this evening...doesn't like the visibility,or rather lack of it over the cowl, but decided he'll live with it because he thinks he'll look cool in it :-) He's already ordered his scarf, helmet and goggles.

Darned cat eh? can't trust em anymore :-)

Wife
Darned shame you can't stuff the Wife in there. It would give her more of an appreciation of model aeronautics don't you think?:D:cool:;) Marty
|
Nah....... she would tell ME to get stuffed
Have any of you fellows tried covering with polyester fabric ( dress lining) and using latex to sorta seal the weave once it's on ? balsa loc to stick it down, and latex to colour it....I know the polyester shrinks well with heat, but I'm not sure how much paint it's gonna take to colour it.....looks like we have an experiment coming up soon ::o I don't think the weave needs to be totally sealed anyway does it? we're not trying to stop those old electrons from soaking into the wood, and we're not worried about fuel soaking in, and since it's NOT a float plane, likely water isn't gonna be an issue..just gotta find some balsa loc.......... |
I know that my polyester suits (yes, I am that old) were very susceptible to burning and melting huge holes just from a tiny ash from a cigarette. Not sure the new polyesters are better with handling heat.
|
Polyspan
Aerodrome RC sells this stuff. It's very similar to dress lining but does a better job especially with lightweight structures. It doesn't shrink much and uses a brush on adhesive. I think you can get it elsewhere on the web though. Here's the link. Marty
http://www.aerodromerc.com/ |
Aerodromerc has: "non woven polyester covering material"
Compare to Monokote: " Flexible High-Gloss Polyester Film" note: non-woven = film Much different from the "woven" polyesters as used in garments. Polyester is simply various types of "plastic". All have different properties depending on the polymers used (IE melt and flash points) |
Experimenting with it can't hurt. Just don't breath the fumes if it melts or burns as the fumes can be poisonous.
|
Marty...if I am gonna use a film, I'll use either monocote or ultra cote...but I want the weave and the dull finish,,,on my last one I used Monocote, and although it worked ok, it had to be dulled down with dull kote, and it was always getting little scratches in the dull kote and was in constant need of touch up...so that's why the fabric this time...I have used Ploy span before, and find it really susceptible to hangar rash...so I'm being a little fussy this time.....db I remember those polyester suits...and pants...I think there's still some laying around here somewhere....with burn holes from welding in them :-) you haven't lived till you have had a blob of hot polyester melting into your leg ..... The cat has informed me that he wants the seat upholstered with leather...preferably made from dog skin.....and he says the dog we have here would likely "donate" enough to do the job.....when I told him it would likely mean the end of the dog, he just smiled :-)

Hi guys,
Finally got my hands on the Red Baron Movie!!! Watched it last night, and enjoyed it. |
If you clean the films with a rubbing alcohol wipe down (after applying), the paints and clear coats stick much better.
