At least I think it's the plane your talking about. I have 3 of Kurt's kits and another on the way. They are very nice. The plans look good also. Steve.

PS.: Ron, thanks for the great tips on how to do lozenge schemes.

Walt,
Are you talking about the Albatross Tri-plane? If so, I know I have more information for you and I remember seeing plans for one. I think it was in an older issue of RC Modeler but I can't say for sure.

dicknadine 03-01-2006 01:00 AM

sure do. how about the 2 passenger 1919 Fokker D7, which I built, prior to Katrina? it was done from an Air Force foto. which I had sent it to the Air and Space Museum, which they had never seen or heard of it. also that foto is on my old hard drive and posted in Vintage catagory , which went under water in Katrina, and I havn't been able to find the original, maybe on Goggle, since. do have the new 43" one, complete in bones waiting for the standard, 43" one to fly. there is also another oddball D7 floating around. a 2 cockpit version, was built by Fokker in 1917 to fly he and his girl friend out of Germay to Holland before the Russians got into Germay. havn't found a photo of it, but its on the schedule to build soon. YES there are Crazy guys out there. dick

WWI Ace 03-01-2006 02:04 AM

Hey guys I've been trying to come up with a triplane to model that is different. I ran across a tripe of Ltn Hans Weiss that flew Dr1 545/17. This tripe had the streaked factory finish from the cowl to past the cockpit, the tail and top wing were white, and the cowl, struts, wheel covers were red. I can't find a picture, and my reference book doesn't know if it was the same tripe that had been painted or not. But the plane he was supposedly killed in was an all white triplane. Can any of you guys help me with more reference material or maybe a picture of this all white tripe? And if it was white, were the cowl, struts, and wheel covers Jasta 11 red? I think if this information is true it would be an interesting tripe to model!!! Steve.

Hi Walt,
If you're interested, I recently developed a DR1 model that was exactly this--scale-like but optimized for aerobatics. I just posted the plans and some pictures in this thread:

http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4912

I'm extremely happy with this model! It has ailerons on all three wings, which allows me to droop the flaps and add camber to all three wings for great slow-flying capability, or raise the flaps for fantastic aerobatic capability (and talk about a roll rate!). It's built entirely from sheet foam (I used Depron) so construction is quick and easy. Here's a link to a flying video:

Walt Thyng 03-02-2006 01:57 PM

Steve,
I haven't gotten into foam yet. Did a little carboard stuff back in the 70's, though.

right now I've got two years worth of new projects not to mention repairs so I'm not adding anythig at the moment.
Walt

Dri

Jetset44 what an awesome DRI!!! I'm loving it! As a matter of fact, I might just tackle the plane next building season. Great Job! Steve, pay attention! Martin

jetset44 03-03-2006 02:08 AM

Walt - Yeah, I didn't get into foam myself until about 3 years ago. But I haven't even touched balsa wood ever since! Depron/Bluecore is an amazing material to work with. It's light, cheap, durable and can be built into remarkably scale models remarkably easily (not just flat profile models). In the last couple years I've developed several scale Depron airplanes, from modern-day jet fighters (F-14, F-18, F-15, T-38, Saab Gripen) to the classic DR1. I love the stuff. But I hear you on the project list, I've got a long one myself... ;)

scaleflyer - Glad you like the DR1! I'm sure you'll like it if you build one, I couldn't be happier with mine. Post some pictures if you do!

Steve

Foam DRI

Steve, I appreciate you sharing your PDFs with the rest of us WWI nuts. :) I have some questions though. How do I take your PDF files and convert/print them in full size so I can cut the kit out? I saw the link to RC Groups and the awesome video (pay attention Guys). :) Perhaps you could tell us about how you start, layout and cut the depron for use. Also a little bit about the setup too would be appreciated. Thanks, Martin

WWI Ace 03-03-2006 03:16 AM

How about where your getting your depron from too!!! Steve also.

WWI Ace 03-03-2006 03:19 AM

Hey Martin. Kurt sent me an email today saying that he sent my 35"ws Fokker tripe out today. Steve.

Can do. Here's the procedure to get started with this model:

1) Note there are two drawings for this model. The full-scale parts templates are used to cut out all the foam and plywood parts, and the scaled assembly drawing shows you how they all fit together (as well as other key construction details).

2) Print out the drawings. Note I've attached two different versions of the parts template file to give you two options for printing it. You can either take the non-tiled version to any Kinkos or other print shop and have them print it out for you on a large 36" wide printer (costs around $5), OR you can print out the tiled version on 8.5x11 sheets of paper at home and assemble all the sheets into one (just cut every other sheet on the printed margins and tape the sheets together with scotch tape). You can print out the assembly drawing on whatever size paper you want (usually 8x5x11), since it's just used for reference.

2) Cut out all of the parts templates with scissors, making sure to cut roughly 1/8" away from the lines for each part.

3) Lay down all of the parts templates on the foam sheet, arranging them however necessary to minimize waste.

4) Once you're satisfied with how all the templates fit on the sheet, pick up each piece individually, LIGHTLY spray the back with 3M 77 spray adhesive, and then place it back on the sheet. This will tack glue each template to the foam.

5) Cut out all the foam pieces by simply cutting on the lines of the parts templates with a sharp Xacto knife. Try to keep the knife as vertical as possible to make the parts accurate and ensure a good fit.

6) For parts that require more than once copy, just use the part you've already cut out to trace the outline on another piece of foam and cut it out.

7) Generally, I leave the paper on the foam pieces until I'm ready to use each one, which helps you keep track of what each part is for. It peels off quickly and easily if you've sprayed a light coat of 3M 77.

When you're done, you essentially have a kit ready to go. It takes me about 2 hours total to cut out all the parts for one airplane, so it doesn't take very long. You can use this same procedure for the plywood parts as well (lite ply can be cut fairly easily with a hobby knife, which is much easier and smoother than a scroll saw).

For glues, I use mainly 3M 77 (for doublers), UHU Creativ for Styrofoam for butt joints (available at most craft stores, the same stuff as GWS glue), and epoxy for critical stuff like wing spars, struts, and motor mounts. You can use foam-safe CA in place of the UHU, as well.

Regarding my setup, I set up my model for good 3D aerobatics which requires a better than 1:1 thrust to weight ratio. I used a Himax 2015-4100, 6.6:1 gearing, 12x6 prop, and Thunder Power 3s 1320 Prolite pack, which gives me 26 oz static thrust on a 21.5 oz AUW model. If you're looking for more of a sport flyer, a smaller motor could work as well. But keep in mind the DR1 requires lots of weight in the nose to balance, and it's better to carry a big motor and big battery than lead ballast...

Steve

Amen, Steve. I haven't flown mine yet, but was astounded with how much weight I had to add. I've got a Himax 2808 brushless in mine and even with the 3s lipo all the way forward in th compartment, I had to add 4 ounces to balance it.

WWI Ace 03-03-2006 06:09 PM

You build fast VACaver!!! I just saw this post yesterday!!!! Ha! Ha! Steve also!!!

Fast? Not hardly...I started this back in December and only finished it this week.

By the way, for those of you looking to print out Steve's plans...try and find someplace that has a plotter. An engineering firm maybe.

I'm lucky enough to have one at work and printed the plans out without having to tile anything. Using spray adhesive, I glued the plans to stiff manila pattern paper, then cut them out. Nice, stiff pattern to use to draw onto the depron.

Tripe info

Steve, I'll call you and we will find Herr Weiss' tripe together. :D Oh and Steve, pick another color besides red..... Man, you guys have no imagination.... :p Martin

Ron 03-06-2006 04:21 PM

finished covering the wing and tail group on the D V111 last evening, and am going to bend up the landing gear this evening ( I hope) .

still looking to see if I can find an example of a full sized D V111 with the wing done in lozenge, but none so far. Once I get the LG on and the guns and wheels made, I'll paint the markings .

scalercflyer 03-08-2006 01:57 AM

Aerodrome tripe

Alright Steve! Tell us about your new kit from Kurt. We are most anxious to hear about it. Also tell us a little about what you are planning. Martin

WWI Ace 03-08-2006 01:59 AM

Martin, I forgot to ask you the other night if you have any info on Ltn. Weiss" all white tripe. You probably have more reference material than any of us!!! Your help is, as always, greatly appreciated. Even though you tease me all the time about red tripes. You guys are gonna emotionally scar me for life if you're not careful!!! I'm fragile!!! Ha! Ha! Steve.:D

WWI Ace 03-09-2006 12:19 AM

Hey guys, got my 35"ws Fokker tripe from Aerodrome the other day. It looks great just like all Kurt's kits. I gotta get started on some building!!! I've got lots of balsa to glue my fingers to. Don't you hate it when that happens? If I end up with something half as nice as one of Walt's planes I'll be happy!!! Steve.:D

Walt Thyng 03-09-2006 01:42 PM

Awwww, geee. This is a very busy season for me. My Tripehound sits forlornly waiting for me to run the pull/pull cables and move on to finishing and covering.

Help. I read a post recently about a game at WalMart that had very strong magnets suitable for holding hatches. I've searched Wattflyer and RCU and apparently can't get the right search term. Does anybody recall this post?
TIA

Ratz......it's snowing. Here we are on the left coast of North America in March, and it's snowing!!!! I can't believe it !! >??oh well, time to work on the old D V111....last night I finished the landing gear and it's wing along with the wheels...today am playing with paint for the tail group and the fuselage markings....pics this evening hopefully.

Walt,

I just picked these up today at Micheal's (craft store). They are 1/2" in diameter and about 1/8" thick. These are some VERY strong magnets. Only $2.99 for a pack of four. Hope this helps.

Radio Shack sells Rare Earth magnets. 2 to a package for $2.00. These are tiny one eighth inch in diameter but very powerful.

WWI Ace 03-09-2006 11:21 PM

Radio Shack is where I get my magnets too!!! They are perfect for hatches and other small things. I've even held wings on with these magnets as long as there is good magnet to magnet contact. Don't try it on large planes but I have used them on my GWS corsair. I always hated the screws that held the wings on those. Can't wait to see pictures Ron!! Sounds like it's gonna be great. Steve.

That adhesive magnet sounds interesting, but I had already gone to Wally World and found the ones I saw a post about. The toy is called "Magnetix." I bought the small 20 piece one for $4.88. That gave me 24 quite strong magnets. They come in a plastic tube like thingy and are about 3/16 inch in diameter and less than 1/4 inch thick (I haven't actually dug one out yet, but the socket is only 1/4 in. deep so the magnet has to be less than that).

Alright guys, I have the top wing built on my little 23"ws Fokker tripe from Aerodrome. There are no instructions because this is a prototype kit. I'm trying to take my time and make sure everything is right. So far it has gone fairly well. When I get some more built I'll try to post pictures. Steve.

8KASL 03-15-2006 02:37 PM

:D Hey All,I love this thread and am a big fan of WWI aircraft.I'm currently building a 1/4 scale Nieuport 28c-1 from BUSA plans and have a set of plans from same for the 1/3 scale Sopwith Pup.I built the 1/3 Pup once before in 1993 and eventually sold it when I moved to Colorado--BIG mistake.I think that WWI planes are the best choise for electric and plan on building 1 per year until I have most of the different ones if I live that long.

WWI Ace 03-15-2006 11:30 PM

Okay guys I just bought a Nippy Black outrunner motor today on the Hobby Lobby Crash sale that is supposed to fly a plane up to 34oz. It was regularly $69.00 and I got it for $19.90!!! Should be a good match for the 35"ws Fokker tripe. If I don't get burned up by wildfires I'll start building again this weekend!!! Steve.

WWI Ace 03-15-2006 11:33 PM

Oh yeah, welcome 8KASL!!! Nice to hear from you!! Please feel free to jump right in with us. There are some great guys here that are both very talented and helpful. I think you'll like hanging out with us. Steve.

Well here's most of the pieces for the D V111..Wheels obviously aren't done yet, thery're still being built...guns to be made, and some weathering ( oil stains ) and small details. for a size reference the bench that the wing is on is 9 1/2 ft long, and the DR1 fuselage is 79" from end to end.
I wasn't able to come up with any pictures of a D V111 with lozenge wing, so I did it in Olive drab....BUT....the lozenge can be done easily later if I find a picture. I'm hoping to power it with one of the Max Cim motors I have on hand
