Interested in what you are doing to this plane. I like the idea of testing with kitchen wrap. What are you using to hold the wrap? Does the wrap have any shrinkage with hot air? I am just logging the info in my mind as I have so many RC nitro hanging around. I may convert a couple to E-Power. Of course I will exchange some of the wood for foam in rebuilding them. I will watch your report.

The glue is school glue stick. I put the glue on the plane then lay the plastic wrap on, where the glue has dried I run the hot iron over the wrap and it seems to melt the glue and makes it stick. I have my iron on half way, any higher melts the plastic. The plastic does shrink with heat. I don't know how well paint stays on it.
I did several modes to the plane. The fuselage was supposted to use 3/16 and 1/8 inch stringers all over then covered with 1/16 inch sheet balsa. I did not use the stringers under the balsa sheet in the front of the fuselage. Rear fuselage has 1/16 inch balsa stringer on the top. I left the 3/16 thick crutch in the rear but thined the width to 1/2 inch. Replaced the stringers with 1/16 x 3/16 then covered with plastic. Cut center out of all formers except the rear one. Tail feathers were sheet balsa, I replaced with stiff pink foam. I made the bottom of the wings flat. I replace all the hard wood wing struts with CF arrow shafts. If it flys ok I plan on changing the landing gear some, replacing the rear fuselage upper wing strut to a more scale location.

Yes, I see the pink foam and the CF struts. That is a great tecnique you have there. You got some weight off the plane. I would like to try that covering as a temp coating for a trial on my smaller planes nitro conversions. I use Krylon Red Oxide primer in light coats on my plastic parts before I paint with Acrylic craft paints. It has worked very well for me. Do a trial test. Not on foam though. Thanks for tip.

Seems about all the DVII had white tail feathers, I made some from white foam but thought they might be too flimsy. I am thinking about not painting the pink tail feathers.
I covered the cockpit with thin white foam instead of balsa too.
In one of my books it says a Fokker EI was covered with celluloid in an attempt to make it difficult to see in the air. Now someone needs to make really good looking frame work of an EI and cover it with kitchen wrap. Would need to hide all the electronics in the front under what looks to be metal back to the cockpit.

IT FLYS. I took the motor out of my SE5A and installed in the Sterling UC DVII. Borrowed an ESC from my trainer. Flew it without the cowling top. It flys good but I made a hard landing and the landing gear broke out of the fuselage, only slight damage. The kitchen wrap came loose on the bottom wings. I will find out if applying heat will reattach the wrap or if I need to reglue. I will now order a motor and ESC, paint, and add details. I will change the landing gear to CF arrow shafts with shock absorbing axle and wheels.

degreen60, great!!! Another successful conversion from Free Flight to R/C.

OOPs, not Free Flight. U-Control to EP RC. Plane was designed for .19 to .45 glow engine. I took out a lot of the interal bracing. I flew it on a Tower pro 2410-08 brushless, 3s Lipo, 9x7 prop. Weight ready to fly was 17oz. It will weight a little more when finished.

I just need to learn to land better but at least I did not crash. Had I put it down in the taller grass in the field it might have not broke the landing gear off but I was trying to land in my back yard.

Applying heat reatached the kitchen wrap. I only have the heat turned half way on. Any hotter will melt the wrap.

Get a GWS Slow Stick F, it looks like a WW1 plane and is easy to fly. I taught myself to fly with mine. Bigest problem I had was taking off with the brush motor and gearbox that came with the plane. It now has a 2410-12Y brushless with 2S lipo. Much easier for a beginer to take off. So far 3 people have learned to fly with mine. Been trying to get wife to learn but she just wants to watch.

Here are a couple more pictures of the Sterling UC plane changed to EP RC. You can see the new landing gear and wheels I made. I am still working on the engine and it needs guns. Oh yes, the tail is pink. I desided not to paint the pink foam.

Get your wife involved and hooked like we are, and she'll be looking at buying model stuff from a positive point of view. Maybe?

Well, I've had both my boys flying, and it's always interesting.

They are curently 9 and 8.

One has mild autism, and he actually does quite well, until he kinda zones out and just lets the plane fly into the distance, and doesn't correct. I have to remind him to bring it back in!

The other one is a bit more crazy, and he likes to bang the sticks around and see the poor Tiger Moth just go crazy. No finess at all!

But the biggest problem they BOTH have is the plane will get up in the air, and they'll both complain about it being too bright! So they just look down at the sticks, and take the eyes off the plane. Scary.
