I would have to sat that the Hawker Typhoon is my favorite. It's just a sexy, mean looking, bird of prey. German Tankers, where scared to death of the Tiffie.

Gee, that's a tough one. WWII had so many beautiful aircraft. I love the Typhoon too but my favorite is probably the Hawker Hurricane.

firemanbill 03-16-2011 03:44 AM

I'm very partial to the B-17, always have been. Even the name "Flying Fortress" just sounds so cool.

heres mine, tho i dont know what it is , rare,> i have seen a pic of a real one, and i said omg- my Wen Mac is prototypical ! 6 big exhaust pipes coming out just behind the pilot, (mines missing the pipes on one side) big air intake behind the pilothouse, (yea thats not what its called lol) nose guns, wing guns, a big red beacon on top that may probably not be correct-
i googled WW2 fighters last night for an hour and saw nothing like it

Looks like a Bell P-39 Airacobra or P-63 Kingcobra. Maybe not quite to scale. I had one just like that when I was a kid. Flew the snot out of it.

See pd1's post above on the P-63.

kevinm 03-16-2011 04:10 AM

wow - yup- i wondered about the weird spinner - its a 37 MM cannon in the center- thanks

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the WowPlanes Typhoon. It looks good, and i have been wanting to try their Liquid Sheeting.

Difficult to think of just one favorite. But as a model, then any that fly in a scale like manner and near to a scale like speed.

I think there's too many 'scale' models that just look so great on the ground, and just so wrong once in the air.

My Dauntless is still my favorite to take flying, much more fun than my Spitfire.

FW-190 and the P-47. I like those bad fat birds.....

nz builder 03-17-2011 05:53 AM

Spitfires all the way! MKII, MKVB, MKIX. It might not have had range or speed of a Mustang or the firepower of a Tempest but I just love those lines. It's pretty.

oh wow...hard one...im going to have to go with the P40 and then the BF 109E

Wrongway-Feldman 03-17-2011 02:32 PM

Mine would have to be the Gloster Meteor. First flew in 1943 and retired from active service in 1980.
An impressive service record for the first jet fighter used in combat by the UK. I don't think that other than the DC3 there was a longer serving plane of its day.

How do you feel about the Typhoon vs the Tempest?

I think I like the look of the Typhoon better, but think of the HP and top speed of the Tempest?
I really love all Supermarine (most pre WWII), all Martin, and all Hawker planes. Add to that my love of the P61 and only slightly less the P38
I used to have a total crush on the B17, but I'm more in awe of the the monsters like the B24 and the Lancaster these days.
My biggest issues is my uncontrollable draw to the flying boats like the Sunderland and the PBY, especially the 5A.

I guess my favorites in order (at least these days) would be: PBY, P61, and I'm really torn for third place with the Spitfire or the Tempest.

(thinking I should just sell the motors I have for my B17 project I'll never get to)

BradT 03-17-2011 10:23 PM

The very pugnacious look and devastating firepower (for its time) of the Bristol Beaufighter make it my WWII favorite. I was fortunate enough to have owned and flown one of Ivan Pettigrew's prototype models of the Beau, his first one at 66", and it was a joy to fly. I have the plans, and hope to build a new one at 80" when I retire and have the time (soon, I hope, I'm already a year overdue!).

My personal favorite(s) are a tie between the P-51D Mustang and the P-47 Thunderbolt.

There are so many categories!
Most esthetically pleasing: BF109E
Most heroic: Hawker Hurricane
Most majestic: B-17 Flying Fortress
Most terrifying: J-87 Stuka
Most iconic: Supermarine Spitfire

Just can't make up my mind tonight...

Love all of those NJS, perfect descriptions!

I'd only add:

Roughest Life: F4-U Corsair
Bravest Pilots: Gruman Avenger

I can't quit tell but is that an Ultrafly-40? Great looking shark:D

motor12 03-18-2011 03:43 AM

For me the BF109e had the look of a killing machine, all business and no frills, the lines were unmistakable. If i were to have one on my tail i would have wanted to be in a P-47. A big beautiful Jug that brought many of our boys home to fight another day.

Big Johnny 03-18-2011 03:55 AM

I heard an old WW II fighter pilot say. If you want a picture to send home it's the P-51, If you wanted to go home, it's the P-47. Avenger pilots where brave, but what about the Devastator pilots, family jewels the size of watermelons. I also have a affection to the Mosquito, A-20 Havoc, B-26 Marauder, SBD Dauntless, Hellcat, FW190 and the Gooney Bird, which I have a model of. The uglyist WW II plane has to be the Helldiver or the Storck (sic)

offtom 03-18-2011 05:18 PM

Like them all

but at the top probably P-40, P-61, B-17,

I am going to have to go with the Spitfire, and the Corsair, Black Sheep Squadron all the way. Favorite medium bomber B-25, and heavy bomber B-17 of course, my father-in-law worked on them in England during the war. Axis planes, I have to go with the Stuka, awesome plane with the distinct scream when diving. Aww, crap, I like em all really. I have seen just about all of them in Dayton at the Airforce Museum. I can spend hours in that place.

Buck Rogers 03-18-2011 09:41 PM

Ooh, tough question - so many to choose from. In terms of my favourite to look at I can't really decide between the Spitfire and the P51.

Fantastic sentiments, so well put; for me it would have to be either the Bristol Beaufighter or the de Havilland Mosquito. Do I really have to decide????

Great videos Hank. So majestic, I don't really think that modern aircraft can acheive that look in the air.
