Well I'm an old guy and all my modelling was in the balsa/tissue/dope age. My first radio control model was a scratch built high wing trainer with McGregor single channel, pulse operated, elastic band powered escapement on the rudder. That's probably Chinese to anyone under 50 but some of you old guys might know what I'm taking about.

Then I guess life got in the way, as it does, and models took a back seat. Along the way, still being interested in anything with wings, I picked up a private pilots licence and a share in a Piper PA28. I've now got three grandsons, the oldest one 12. Like most kids of his age, I think he spends far too much time on the X-box so I've been trying to get him out and actually "doing" something. He's enjoyed coming target shooting, been doing some archery and recently been introduced to the fact that with those things on the end of his arms you can actually make things, not just press buttons.

Living on the south coast here in the UK, gulls are part of the scenery and they seem to have got the knack of flying pretty well so I thought I'd give it a try.

Electric flying was totally new to me and I was amazed at how "available" RC kit had become, small cheap and reliable.

I had never heard of foam board and never used hot glue or carbon fibre.

I'm not much of one for working from plans, usually just making it up as I go along.

The gull is just a plane with conventional controls, rudder, elevator, ailerons and motor. The body was made out of two pieces of 3" thick wall insulation board, hollowed out and shaped up with a wood rasp. It was then covered with brown paper soaked in PVA glue and eventually painted in matt white emulsion.

The wings are made of 4 bits of foam board and about 48". The head is again foam insolation covered in paper with a balsawood beak.

The head is held on with a couple of magnets and can be removed and a propeller fitted if necessary.

I must say it was tricky to fly, it was fine when it was up but getting it up and down was a bit exciting at times. It was prone to wing tip stalling at slow speed. I guess a bit of washout on the tips would have cured this but I got the hang of it ok as it was. Eventually I lost the gull when gliding off some local cliffs. I was flying it in very low lift conditions and one time I just couldn't get it back, it disappeared under the lip of the cliff, never to be seen again.

than you. I am lucky to have Great Grands.

Do another Sea Gull, I liked it. We have all the Ocean Birds & most of the
soaring birds here. i.e. Bald Eagles: Osprey: Hawks; Storks: Egrets, and
Buzzards. To name a few? And Gators, they don't Fly But run extra fast

I think you will like Electric RC, no more SLIME on your builds!!!

Ahh yes, I cut my modelling teeth on free flight gliders in the 1960's and I well remember coming home stinking of glow fuel :)

I'm certainly getting to like electric.

I quite fancy having a go at a Buzzard next. In the mean time I've made a slow pusher and a small trainer for the lad. The foam building is certainly quick but lacks the elegance of a well constructed, light weight built up wing.

Just got back into RC last Fall. Loved electric so much, decided to convert my old .60 Decathlon to electric power. No deadsticks, no clean-up. The foam parkflyers have been great fun but miss my balsa.

Yep i sold off around 70 or so of my nitro and gas planes over the last 2 years ,most of them i scratch built . I dont miss any of them and i like my new electrict ones just as much .:D joe

I visit Wattflyer Scale Electric forum every so often and post what I think may interest others but am surprised how few new posts I see. I think that those of you who prefer to hang out on Wattflyer should consider promoting some fun build-off contests to spark interest and overall vitality of these forums. I did started that years ago on RC Groups and informal fun contests are still ongoing there.

Hi all.

Another one of those old guys who remember single channel with rubber powered escapements. My older brother had one, gave it to me, put it in a 1/2A air powered boat.

We used to get to go to the big city, Kalamazoo MI, with mom and visit the hoppy shop in a sporting good store. Loved those old stick & paper small rubber powered kits.

Later, 1/2A free flights and home built U-controls. Balsa of course!

Then college got in the way, and moving to S. California. Work at Douglas Aircraft nights and UCLA days.

USSR got in the way in '61, and I ended up in Army Reserve unit that was activated at the end of my 6 months training cycle. Spent good time in San Francisco at Presidio, met my future wife, back to civilian in August '62, married, and back to Douglas and UCLA.

Still had some "spare time", and what a change in what was available in RC! Got a 5CH radio system, an Ugly Stick and a K&B .60. Learned on that.

Retired in '92, still flying R'Cs, and mover to Oregon.

But by '95 had built a 2 place Kitfox and got my Flight certificate. Lost interest in RC and sold off my planes and stuff. Sold the 'fox and built a 2 place Sonex ( small "rocket" with 120hp and 170mph).

Sold the Sonex in 2010 and a few years later got back into R with 2 micros. Have now progressed to having 6 electrics, some as kits, some as scratch built.
