Hi guys...
Martin, I aquired an air compressor today, and tested some "Testors" enamel on an old :ultracote covered wing. Will let it dry overnight. What paints do you think would work best????? enamels, laquers or anything else....... Do you plan to re-cover your Dr1 first, or simply paint over the HIDEOUS RED MONOCOTE???? Any advise or tips or even harassment is most appreciated!! Chris/Murph |
Fritz kempf color scheme???
Hey martin.........would you happen to have any Photos etc.. of Fritz Kempf's Tripe??? I found it on the paper plane website refered to earlier in the post. Just not sure how accurate it is. You said you have an extensive collection of tripe documentation, so wondering what you think... etc...etc...
Chris/murph |
Dr1
Oh yea...
Martin the tripe is #213/17........ |

Camo
Murph, should be no problem to find what you need. See the last website below first. The other websites contain some cool tripes too. Also Murph take a little piece of your covering and experiment with different paints. Don't forget to scuff it first with some steel wool or scotch brite pads to give the paint a tooth to stick to. Steve, where are you when I need you!? Martin

Kempf Dr1
Kiwi....Martin.........
Thanks for the great photos and links!!!!!!!!! I think I now have alot to go on. I am wondering about the light blue under the wings.......Is the underside of fuselage also the blue? Or is it the streaked Camo. If anyone knows I Would be most appreciative to hear from you. On a lighter note I tried "testors" enamel on an old wing, and it adhered very well. Stayed quite flexible!! Cut a piece of covering off wing and crumpled it....No flaking at all!!! I was surprised at the durability factor. Will try other enamel brands to see results. Thanks guys........ Chris/Murph |
Chris, did you notice the differences in the two black and white photos? Cross styles, tailplane etc.
Nev |
Kempf dr1
Sure did Kiwi.
Looks like the tailplane colors where switched on the later scheme. Along with the later "straight crosses" Glad you pointed out the markings as I was wondering about the tailplane differences. Looking at the crosses gave me a clue!! Chris/murph P.s. did you take those color photos? |

This thread got me looking through my materials, including a number of Squadron books and numerous issues of Flying Scale Models, and it is very apparent that the all-red German planes were very rare. Most of the German planes, even when retaining the streaked green and multi-color patchwork camoflage managed to be very colorful. Going to make deciding a color scheme for my E-III interesting.

WWI planes
There are some reputable Micro planes available. GiantScalePlanes .com sells the same models available from RaidenTech and NitroModels that are 15% cheaper (most of the time). the best models I have flown are the Great Planes from Tower Hobbies - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...H=wwi&FVPROFIL=++
They are built well, flown for Q/A issues and don't have any bad flight characteristics. |
Hobby-Lobby Wed sale: 1:7 Tiger Moth!
Hi All,
Looks like the Hobby Lobby Wed sale this week is the 1:7 Tiger Moth ARF. I don't know the price (it only being Tuesday) But I thought you guys might be interested! Thanks, Franny |
I always kinda thought Tiger Moths were ugly!! But that's my own personal opinion. Steve
|
You must not be British... ;)
|
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The 1/4 scale Tiger Moths by the Late Merrit Zimmerman were true works of beautiful art, especially with the scaled down fittings and the fully functioning scale operating engines for which he even made up the patterns to have the castings made. I've seen many poorer quality models in Aviation Museums. And his planes flew!

tiger moth
Hi WW1 ace.........I have a Tiger moth!! But then again I am 1/2 Briitish.
Dual citizenship....U.S. & British. However I agree the Tiger Moth isn't the best looking plane around. At our field in Northern California the older guys talk more than they fly. So the running joke (started by the younger guys) is take off your pink panties and fly that plane!! No offense Franny (and other women folk). I have no doubts that you could outfly most of the "guys" at my club!! So when building my moth kit I installed a bomb release to drop a pair of a gal friend's donated pink underwear over the field. HA HA !!! If timed right and a little crosswind they will drift right into the pit area!! HA HA!! Those older guys just love it. Chris. P.S. Still waiting for that darn Dr1 !!!!:mad::mad::mad: Looks like it might be shipped at the end of the month!! |
Well guys... Just added another Iron to the fire.....
I fly small electrics, .25-1.20 glow planes, And now have aquired a 1/3 scale Cap 580 with a 3w106cc GAS engine for $1000 (needs about $1000 in electronics etc. to finish.) Boy this hobby sucks up dollar bills like a hurricane!! Fly till you die, or go broke...........Chris/Murph |
No I'm not British Franny. I'm a Texan!!! As far as my not really liking the LOOKS of a Tiger Moth I DO appreciate their place in aviation history. And ANY scale model plane is a work of art in my book!!! I really think Hobby Lobby could've lowered the price a little more for the rest of you though!! Steve.
|
I think so too... $40 isn't bad, but...
Like many things British, I think it is an "acquired" taste ;) Perhaps you would prefer an AT6? :) Franny |

Chris, yes I took those photos Easter 2005 when there were 5 of them flying, this Easter I took this photo!
Franny, No, but I would go for a Harvard! |
That is a sweet photo. How cool! but,... kinda scary, huh?
f |
Wow!!
You are so lucky to get to see that!!
I live in a northern California town of 7000 people surrounded by millions of trees. No air displays to be seen. I grew up in San Diego, and used to see a couple WW1 bipes flying around above my parents house in the 70's and 80's. Never seven Dr1's at once!! |

I didn't know Camels could fly!! I figured their humps would ruin their aerodynamics!! Ha ha!! Steve.

I think that my Dr1 is being shipped via Camel(4 legged one):D:D:D

Hi Martin........Have you started that GP tripe yet?
Have you settled on Waldo Pepper color scheme? Are you going to re-cover And paint? or use Monocote etc.... Murph |
Camo scheme fpr GP tripe
Well Murph it's a toss up between the RB's lesser known camo scheme (see below) or the Great Waldo Pepper scheme. If I go with the RB's scheme below, It would save me a lot of work. Hey Guys, help me choose! Steve where are you when I need you?

Here's a pic of the front. Martin

Paint
Sorry Murph, forgot to answer you. I plan to scotch pad (rough up) the covering and repaint using my airbrush. I will have to experiment a little with paints, but should be no problem. Stripping this plane would be very labor intense. Martin
|
RB camo
PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE PINK BACKGROUND SURROUNDING THE CROSS ON THE UPPER WING! REAL MEN never painted their planes with PINK paint anywhere on their war mounts!!! :D Martin
|
Dr1
So whose pretty pink enhanced plane is that!!:D
So there appears to be a lot of RED in those photos.:) I bought some Krylon short cuts enamel to paint mine...Testors enamel worked great in my tests. tried to scratch it, and crumpled some of the monocote.........It survived both quite well, no flaking. Just worried that it may take a lot of coats of paint to cover the red. Really dont want to re-cover all those scalloped trailing edges. are you sure that isn't the lesser known "Pink Baron's Dr1"?:):D Murph Oh Yeah.........watch your six....degreen60's camel has been seen hunting red planes!! |

Nev How do I post photos so they don't end up in thumbnail format? |
Hi guys....Looks like Kiwi has all the good full-scale photos!
So Kiwi......Have the Germans invaded New Zealand, Or are these photos from somewhere else?? Chris/ Murph |
That's It!
