Krylon or any enamel from the hardware store will work. Clean the area to be painted with alcohol and scuff it with steel wool, scotch brite pads or something for adhesion.
spay light for the first coat and allow to dry, then add for coverage. It will run very easily on the plastic.

Kelly Field had a couple Fokker DVIIs that were captured after WWI painted in their scheme also. Steve

Haven't had as much time lately, but this is how far I've gotten on the Comet DR1.

Thanks. I got the idea from the villain in "Flyboys".

WWI Ace 08-01-2008 02:53 PM

Well stay with it Cookie!! I'd liketo see some flying pics or maybe a video of that one!! Steve

Still more building to do before it's finished, but once it's done, I'll try to get my flying buddy to photograph it or video it in the attempts to fly it. Notice I said attempts to fly it.

SE5A arrived this morning. It looks so good the way it is I think I will do minimum changes to make it into a US plane. That red nose has got to go. What is the best way to get the trim off? I tried just pealing some of the white trim off and all I got was the clear top and left white streaks on the plane. The roundles are easy, can be covered with US roundles. I will add the unit marking of the US 25th aero squadron. This one had been bought in a yard sale so did not come in a box. Does this plane came with a pilot? I did not think a pilot came with it but received one with mine. I will be filling both sides of the pilot with epoxy and using it to vacuum form more pilots. Now I have 3 differant pilots to chose from.

What is the wing span of the model?

Top Flite makes a "Trim Solvent"......it will cut right through those white streaks.

Also....a bit of heat (not too much) will soften the glue/adhesive, and make it easier to remove.

degree60, the top wing is 27". It's a Comet SuperStars kit that I bought on eBay. Cookie

That is about the size I would like for a Dr1. I have the sterling plans but they have a wing span of only 23"

Heat took it right off. I was afaird it might harm the covering under it but it left it ok. The white streaks were on the front part of green covering so I just took a little bit of the green covering off. I have now painted the uncovered front part of the fuselage green. As soon as I get the new stickers I have made on the fuselage I will post a picture.

Hey Martin, my SE5A will not have any red on it unless you think I should leave the nose red. LOL

Here is a photo of what I have done to the fuselage so far. I added to the tail sked so the rudder won't hit the ground. I reversed red and blue on the rudder. Changed color on tail to blue. Removed red on front of fuselage and painted green. Changed roundel to US colors and added unit markings of the US 25th areo squadron.

New US roundles on the wings.

Only thing left to change is the red cowl landing gear, and wheels. Maybe we should vote, do I repaint the cowl or leave it red for Martin. LOL

I think paint it blue, or maybe black on the front and blue on the sides. I think the roundles have enough red in them for this plane.

degreen - looks great! Really like what you've done with the SE5. Be sure to throw a light coat of Matte Spray on there - I feel it made a world of difference to mine.

I crashed my SE5 into a goal post.
I just got a new one, I'll use the wings from the new kit to fix the current one, and eventually do a complete repair of my old wings, and do a full recover of the new kits' fuse and repaired wings.

I'll probably do an American theme as well.

So, about the above link - are the thumbnails just for teasers, or can we somehow actually view them? Seems we can only look if we buy the prints?

Recover the wings in yellow. Just remove the red with white trim on the front of the fuselage and recover or paint. Redecal with the round stars. Put the hat-in-ring decal on it and you have a trainer for the US 94th aero squadron.

7car7 08-05-2008 03:51 PM

That's a cool shot, where did you get that picture? Looks like a book?

How come the wings would be yellow? is that a Trainer thing?

I have a book that list colors for SE5A and the US had them as trainers with yellow wings.

I think the picture is on a model box that I found on the net. It was an old plastic model. I am sure it is not a photo but an artist drawing.

Another thing I found the 25th Aero Squadron only flew the SE5A a couple of times in action before WW1 ended. When they went into action the first time some of or maybe all the planes did not have a Vicker gun on the top wing yet. So I do not need to make wing mounted Vicker gun for my plane to be correct.
