Walt:....understood on the threading part. This however wont make the dia of the fins change as they go towards the head. I know....picky, picky, picky :rolleyes: . I did cut about 60 rings with a razor blade and they seem to be doing the job...it isn't EXACTLY like the real motor, but close enough for jazz........I started small at the base and got progressively larger as I got away from the center. this makes it look tapered as the full sized one was. I have the valve train done, pushrods and rocker arms, and now just need to do the copper pipes from the exhaust ports, paint and it's done. I'm just going over to the hardware store to see what I can use for the copper pipes.
Pictures I have show the copper pipes going right into the crank case, but that seems odd, because where would the exhaust gasses go to??
I could understand them going to approx that location, and then be open near the crank case. This would explain the oily mist of castor oil that the motor sprayed everywhere. OR...would these be intake tubes which would explain them going into the crank case, but then where is the exhaust coming out??? . I guess I'll just have to kinda wing it unless I can come up with a couple pictures with more detail in them....on the other hand if I just run the tubes down to the CC, who is really going to know the difference :confused: Just curious to see if anybody knows the answer, and to satisfy my own curiosity on the subject..
CC, cyls and valve train assembled weigh in at 1 ounce....actually 27 grams. I made 5 of the nine cylinders thinking that I'd need them, but after I put it ino the cowl, I discovered that only three are really needed.

I got the answer to the copper tube mystery......they are intake tubes.

Here is a rear view photo of the Le Rohne/Oberursel-2 showing the copper air ducts from the crankcase to the cylinder heads.

These motors had no carbureter so air and fuel entered the crankcase through the hollow crankshaft, photo 2, and were mixed by the rotating motion of the crankshaft. From there the mixture traveled via the copper pipes to the cylinder head.

Kensp:.....yup got that photo. But I was not convinced that this was the motor for this particular plane when I was asking the question about the exhaust.....Seems there were two Oberursel engines...a monosoupape and the one you have a picture of. My problem was that I had not figured out yet where the exhaust gases exit the motor, and was looking for the " complicated" way it was done.....trouble is they tricked me and used the very simple method of coming right past the exhaust valve out the top of the head...no manifold, no header...it just exits through the holes around the exhaust valve. now that I have it striaght in my head, I'm a little more comfortable with my very crude attempt at a rotary engine.

Brad...these next two pictures are for you ;) crude, but hopefully acceptable.....There are actually 5 cylinders on that crank case, but as I mentioned earlier, only three are needed.:rolleyes: And for my next trick, it's on to the Guns.( I'm only planning to make two of them):D

Dick......I think in total there are almost four hours actual building time in the engine....first evening I made the cylinder tubes and top plates for the heads, and laminated the crank case....that didn't take long, but since I soaked the balsa sheets before I rolled them, I had to wait till the next evening for them to dry. Evening two, I cut and assembled all the fins which took about an hour...they really go quite quickly once you decide how to do it...then I glued them on the Crank case. last evening I made the intakes and installed them along with the push rods and rocker arms. This afternoon painted the whole mess...added the sparkplugs and ignition wires, and installed it into the cowl.....I made two extra cylinders and installed them along with their intakes and sparkplugs which added to the time required.( I think you could easily do three cyls in two and a half to three hours.)
Total weight of the engine is just under two ounces, which isn't really bad considering there is about 95 pieces to it, and it's 24cm in dia ( that's about 9 3/4" ) I hope the guns come out a little better since they are right out in the open on the front deck . :eek:
I steamed and rolled the outer covers this evening, so I hope to carry on tomorrow evening if all goes well. Hope they don't split or crack when I try to cut all the slots. Once the power system is chosen and installed, I will make the front clamp plate for the propellor after I carve it... c/w all the through bolts. Brad.....I still have lots of that clear yellow cedar you obtained for me a couple years back , so I guess I gotta carve some more propellors. bribe time...get the D V11 back into service, and I'll carve you a prop too....I think I'm going to do the guages and a seat in the cockpit so that " Manfreddy" has a nice comfortable place to sit, and he can keep track of what's going on under the hood. Man I must be nuts...this is getting too detailed for me...what's going on ??:confused:

Ron, I think business is a little slow for you right now, and you're overcompensating by putting all your energy into this build. How's that for armchair psychology?

brad. gas is is $2.42/gal, here in Greensburg,La.,USA. (near Baton Rouge.La) sorta makes you stay home a little more. spent the evening cutting out the miniture 1/8" dia magnets out of the 10 "Mag Links" games @ $1 /game, approx 16 magnets per game. perfect for hatch hold downs, might even be strong enough for strut ends. dick

Brad:....Most of my building is done 4 to 6AM and or 10 to mid night....or both :-).....Gas was 94cents a liter last I checked ( about 3.70 to American Gallon)......I am thinking I might be able to get by for a awhile with the old Astro sport 40 on a gearbox trick for the first while on this model, because the prop in the picture is the original one I used with that setup on the DR1...add that to 6S lithiums, and it should work OK...I also used this in the original Spacewalker hmmmmm. That's why I was asking if you still had the one that came out of the DR1, as I lost track of it, and didn't really want to touch on the D V11 subject for a while after
the MX80 mishap, but hopefully by now you've hardened up to it:-)...Also have a Y wind maxcim that might do the trick with a large enough reduction and enough cells, but it will need a speed control,and I will have to build a gearbox for it....which I'm not into at the moment.I still have one of my home made speed controls...and it's the one from the DR1....decisions decisions.......speaking of which I gotta decide how I'm going to do the gun muzzles, and the cooling slots in the covers......got the pilot's end done pretty much last night except for some doo dad's I have to hang onto them.Think I'll try to cut the slots before I get carried away with the other stuff.

Talking to Steve, I took his advice and ordered this out runner for my foamie tripe ( which will NOT be ANY shade of RED) :D . Guys, is it my imagination or did the cost of brushless motors and controllers come down? :confused: Seems like it might be worth me selling my brushed stuff and sticking with the brushless motors, etc. ;) I was surprised to find that this company is local to me. Seems like I may be in trouble. :eek: YIKES! Anybody deal with them? Here is a pic of the motor. Swings a 10X 4.7 prop. Anybody interested in some 400 motors? :D :D Martin

Ron, that big ol' Sport 40 is sitting on my bench with the prop still attached. Say the word, and it'll be in your hands in a flash, and I'll top up my tank while I'm up there.:) I'm going to power the 51" Tiggie with an unemployed Astro 15G that I have in a box; there's nothing wrong with the Cobalt motors other than being "out of style". They're probably about the same efficiency as the outrunners, and the brushes last for years. Another FAI 15G lying unused will find a home in a large foamie warbird one of these days, too. (Another "couldn't resist" find at Puyallup).

Martin.....brushless motors SHOULD be cheap...there's less parts to make than a brushed motor :rolleyes: but I guess we are paying for the R and D it took to get things working.....I remember the first brushless motor I had anything to do with...it was made in the good old USA, and was almost 700 Cdn dollars....I saved for a long time to buy it.....I still have it,after about ten years and it's still going strong...matter of fact the quality is such that if I ever see one at a swap meet, I buy it...guys are selling them cheap, because they aren't quite as efficient as the newer ones. my thinking is that if the new motors are 89% efficient, and the old ones I use are only 86 3/4% , who's it going to notice the difference in flight time??? Certainly not me that's for sure!!
I was wondering why I didn't see any camo on the tripe, then I realized it isn't yours...Whew!!!! thought I'd lost it for a moment there...looks like good little model..I have a kit for a foamie tripe that I obtained years ago, and have never gotten around to building it ( it comes pre colored red )....I think it's a simprop kit.
just seems that I build larger ones, and the little guys never get done.
guess it will have to go in the swap meet next month.

Steve...using Brad's psychoanalytical theory, I've figured out that Martin in actuality really likes red triplanes, but he cannot admit it because his father's third cousin's wife's friend's uncle's daughter on her mother's side. tripped on a red triplane model some years ago, and it caused the tabby cat some grief, so he had to promise the family when he was a small child,that he would never own a red triplane. There are issues with other models too, but we'll leave that for next week's session ;)

Brad...got the guns finished and mounted last evening....guess next time you're out, if you remember, bring along that old gold motor, and we'll mount it in the D V111 to see what happens. I'm not sure, but I think it swings that prop at about 4700 rpm. on 20 cells. I forget exactly, but it flew the others with some authority, and they were about the same size as the D V111...Ivan had a peek at the rotary....he thinks I have too much time on my hands:rolleyes: The guns have cocking handles and round counters mounted on the butts. even did the little capscrews that hold the heat shield onto the barrel.did not add the little sight thingy as I wasn't able to get a photo of a real gun that has them on it..I think those are kinda just artistic licence by Wms bros or who ever makes the kits.
don't forget about the pattern clinic here on the 22nd of the month...Hartley Hughson will be here, and Chad Northeast is threatening to appear also....should maybe learn something if I go...might even be worth the drive for me to get there. film at 11

OOOPPPSSS!!! We said something about the color guys. I hope it doesn't cause Martin to relapse or something!!! Ha! Ha! Oh yeah, got the horizontal stab and elevator built this weekend. Not much, but at least I built a little. Between work, family, and other activities I just do what I can. Still need to post pics. Maybe I can get to it soon. Steve.

Speaking of existential issues; how do you guys get all three ailerons on the Tripehound to travel the same distance? I can get the top and mid wings equal, but the lower wing is about half.

On ailerons Walt....it's not existential issues....it's exponential issues :-)

how did you connect the three sets of ailerons on your Tripehound?
is there a rod that goes between them? I must not have been paying real good attention at that part of your build, because I can't recall how you did it....If you used a mechanical linkage, then we should between us all be able to figure it out.
