Posting pics
Steve, The last one I posted I just copied and pasted (see above). I haven't tried to post some pics yet, but if you look at the previous posts, Walt told us how to do it. Hey Guys, let's get started with some new projects! :D We need to see some pics, etc, of those new projects so all of us can get pumped up! The world needs more WWI planes! The flying season will be upon us before too long, so we don't have much time. I am about to post some pics of my DRI foamie triplane build (now that my Honey Do list has shrunk and I can build again!!). It's about half done. I think I will post pics of my shop while I'm at it, especially my "Official building table". I just know you Guys will be jealous!! :D :D Let's encourage one another! Break out the balsa and glue! Martin

If you are using Adobe Photoshop,there's a window where you can choose size. If you're using Preview just go to export and choose the file type. You will then be giventhe option to change the size. For our purposes about halfway between Medium and whatever is lower.
Walt Finishing up the "front box" on the Sopwith Triplane. Still solving some assembly problems as I want to make my version "takeapartable" instead of one piece. Will post some pics this week. |
looking for a set of D7 plans to convert to the one off 1919 C1, 2 passenger conversion. had mine, 60", gas power, all ready to fly and Hurricane Katrina took it and all 30 of the rest of my planes, plans motors, everything including 3 shops, house, 2 cars. but NOT Nadine and me. any size will do as, I'm an old full scale aircraft designer and can up or down scale to my size. thanks dicks stamm 1.225.222.6779 or [email protected]

I am fortuately old enough to remember seeing many WWI airplanes in flying condition or in the sky. A couple of years after WWII I had a chance to fly a Nieuport 28 but for one time in my life I had sense enough to turn that down. Two things I didn't want to wreck, my body and a very nice airplane. Pre WWII there was a Tommy Morse sitting by Gotch Field near where we flew free fllight at Rosecrans and Western in the L.A. area. Hated to see it just sit and deteriorate but nobody seemed to take care of it. Give me WWI scale every time. Have a Bristol M1c from Balsa USA in mind. EP of course as soon as the bench gets clear of some other projects.

Hey guys, Marty has been telling me about this polyspan (I think that's what it's called) fabric. Sounds easier than iron on film but I have some questions. If you have to use adhesive such as Sig Stix It and then seal the fabric and paint it, how can it still be light? If you don't seal it air flows through it right? Would a light coat of sprayed on paint and a light coat of clear to seal the decals keep the air out of it? Martin says this stuff is great but I've never used it before so I'm relying on you guys to teach me the do's and dont's. Also, about what temp should the iron be set at? Does this stuff work on small models like 1/12th scale WWI planes? What kind of paints work best on it? How well and what technique do I use to get it around corners smoothly? Is it fairly durable unlike the "tissue" types of covering? Have I asked enough questions yet? Thanks guys. Steve.

I covered a Lazy Bee with what was identified as Polyspan. It's a bit directional when it comes to shrinking so you have to watch the grain like we used to on silkspan. It has stood up well for over 10 years. I never sealed it. It's good stuff where weight savings are involved. One thing (trick?) I did was to use adhesive only where necessary: around edges or undercambered surfaces.

OK guys,
I'm taking a deep breath before a major meeting tomorrow, so here's some build photos of my Tripehound. 1. rib stack (56 total!) 2. spar slots and tools 3. wing tip stack 4. laminating rear spars (I'm building this bird mostly out of my scrap box (the ribs were cut from wrong sized ribs for my Dr.1, how's that for irony?) 5. center section 6. six basic wing panels 7. cabane andinterplane struts 8. fiting cabane strut 9. fuse sides (two) Next time, "front box, wing attachment mods, fitting wings, tail surfaces Walt:D |

Say Martin, I think I've seen those plans before. How does he do it? He must not be raising three boys because they are always bugging me about something. I gotta get back to work on my planes tomorrow!! Walt makes me feel like a lazy bum! Steve.

Fact is I'm NOT raising any kids and there's not much on TV that I like. So on night when I don't have meetings, I spend an hour or two in the shop (never past 9:00)

I've done the (Rake) Tripehound, BE2c - not to mention my own AW Quadraplane - and made the wings removable as complete 'cells' in each case. I used a dummy strut from thin cf rod to permanently hold the roots in position. Is this what you're thinking of? tim |
I am building my Tripehound as a take apart model, but I'm using the techniques I learned from my VK Camel and unknown Dr.1. The top wing will be one piece, but the mid and lower wings will be two piece I'm fabricating functional semi-scale strut brackets out of 1/16 ply.

Sorry guys. I had a major computer failure and lost all my photos. Will take some more soon. Went to a swap meet today and picked up servos and covering. My wife seems to be on a honey-do rampage today so don't expect to get much modelling done. Somewhere along the way my fuselage went bananna on me so it took some time to get it restraightened. I've got all the wing mounting problems solved, but still have to make some plywood fittings. I'm also going to copy the landing gear system from my V.K. Camel in order to get some shock action. I could bend the whole thing in one piece, but I'm going to take the easy way out and make a right and left side. Pics soon.

sounds familiar on my 43" D7. on the 3rd attemp and still not looking exactly square. sure miss all of my stash of accumalated special tools. starting from scratch is for the birds. dick

1. straightened fuse with read deck stringers 2,3 lower wing alignment before final fitting 4,5 lower wing attachement system in and out of fuse. 6. note false ribs. only half as many as scale, but should add a nice touch. 7. motor mount, motor and gearbox 8,9 cowl left and right 10 mid wing attachment system |

Still waiting for the DVa plans. Can't tell you much more than that it is intended for 60 2s ts to 90 4s wet power. Supposedly highy detailed. Also know that it is 1/6 scale.
Finished all the ailerons on the Tripehound and joined the top wing this evening. Wife is out of town, so tomorrow (Sunday)should bring final fitting of wings. Next will be landing gear; then final fittng, sanding and covering, I think you will like the color scheme. \Walt |
Fokker D7
am in the process of finishing my 43" D7, Richard Maxwell plans, 1967. wing struts to go, so far 9 oz total. have the second fuselage built, its the 1919 2 passenger version and ready to start on version #3, a double cockpit model, built for Fokker and girl friend to fly out of Germany before the Russians got there. all will be electric. photos when I learn how to download my new HP camera, its awful confusing directions. modeling is a H--- of a lot easier than the new fangled camers. dick

OK I'm back....got the D V111 out from under the bench, dusted her off, and we're away to the races. yesterday I cut out the ailerons, hinged the tail feathers, mounted them to the fuse....completed the tubing for the main struts. I wanted them to look like tubing, not streamlined.... as the originals were just steel tubing. I boiled some strips of 1/16 balsa till they were soft, then rolled them around a 3/8" dowel and put them into the oven till dry. installed them last evening, and they are looking OK.
Next I have to install the pull pull system for the elevators and rudder, then fabricate the rear wing struts. I'm going to do the dreaded lozenge paint scheme with black and white striped horizontal stab/elevators, and white rudder, and starburst thingy on the cowl. hopefully with no interruptions ( like work getting in the way) she will be done this spring in time for the Spring Classic. |
