I have the setup I am going to keep in the Nieuport now. It is a 2410-8 outrunner with a 8x6 prop and 2s lipo. I checked and the motor draws 2 amps WOT 5400rpm. I fly it most of the time at less that half throtle. I think I could fly for a hour or more if I wanted too. I took it up high and dived. When it rolled of to one side it just turned and zoomed back up out of the dive. I wonder if all the problems some people are having with this plane is too much prop. They are saying it goes crazy and rolls over on it back and dives into the ground. I give the plane max rudder and all it did was spiral down till I give opposite rudder. I have to keep on the controls of this plane, letting go of the controls will not let the plane recover to level flight. Now I need another WW1 plane to fill my needs. I only have 12 to pick from when I have to go fly, oh, one don't count, it is a Tiger Moth, so I only have 11.

Flying

hey Boys, anyone doing any flying lately? Huh? Where'd everybody go? Marty

degreen60 04-29-2010 01:12 PM

I been working on improving the landing gear on the Scorpio Nieuport 28. Everytime I landed it seem to want to break loose at the fuselage. I just added a V shape piece of plywood with a slot cut for the axle to go through. Now I have rubber bands holding the axle in the bottom of the slot. This time of year the little black bugs get all over your face while flying so I put on my bug net and took the plane out and flew. Landed without breaking a thing and the landing was even a little ruff.

IndyJones 04-29-2010 02:15 PM

I recently bought the eFlite Fokker DVII, but haven't had the time to build it. I did purchase a used Great Planes Fokker DR.I that's nice but I'm going to paint on it. Besides that, I still have a Lanier DVII, the eFlite Grasshopper, and an old Kavan Albatros to build! Whew!

Mongo40 04-29-2010 02:31 PM

I wish I could do some flying, wind has been blowing so hard here in SW Oklahoma that its been impossible, plane would end up in the next county if you tried to fly, it was blowing 30 to 40 mph with gust up to 50 yesterday, more of the same today.

I have been flying my scatch built triplane ( and Marty it is GREEN:tc: not red:)) But the last few days it has been way to windy.

I have a Kavan Albatros that has been through many battles. I replaced the landing gear before first flight with CF legs as I understand that is a weak point. The replacement gear has held up fine. I finally had to replace the plastic leading wing edge on the upper wing. I used CF arrow shaft split in half. The brush geared motor only lasted about 4 flights. I now have a 2410-08 with 9x7 prop on 2s.

Somebodys horses got loose and trampled the new 30x300' runway we put in!! Will have to fix it because it rained 3" before they got on it. We have 4" deep hoof prints all over it!!! Steve

That happens to me all the time to because my runway is in our hay field.

Not a lot of flying or building for me lately. Home life has been VERY busy, and it's been very windy also.

I'm in the middle of a Powerline Hobbies N17 build for a friend. It's a piece of junk scale wise in stock form, I've shortenned the nose, and am making sprung landing gear from scratch. It's slow going because of above mentioned busy-ness.

I've got 3 planes that need some sort of repair - Albatros needs new wheels/axle made. Stock SE5 needs the tip of an aileron fixed, and the Fokker DR1 (of course) needs it's interplane struts replaced.

Fortunately I've got a WONDERFUL SE5 to fly, and a Jenny and Tigermoth. Not to mention my silly fast MIG 21 pusher jet.::o Just need more time to fly!

scalercflyer 04-30-2010 08:34 PM

Wind and time

I hear you Buddy! I have retreated to my man cave to do some building too because of the crappy weather. I did manage to spend some time on a small pusher Mig 29 made out of 3mm depron. Just need paint and controls. :) I also have a couple of new birds to maiden (Alfa FW190 and E Flite L4 grasshopper). If only this wind would stop! Since spring has sprung, the :censor: witches seem to come up with every kinda project you can imagine for me to do! Curses foiled again! :censor:  Never fear though, flying season will soon be here! Marty

dbcisco 04-30-2010 09:10 PM

Most of my days that are great for flying will be spent gardening and landscaping. Darn wife!:D Sweat equity my donkey!:(

actonw5 05-04-2010 12:16 AM

Own the DH-2; bring on the Eindecker

As a satisfied buyer of the depron DH-2 I would like nothing better than having a depron Eindecker. Stick and tissue conversions have not fulfilled hopes.

degreen60 05-13-2010 12:13 AM

Let me see if I can get this thread a little action. Here is a question to start all of you thinking or searching for the answer. What is the name of the plane Sopwith built during WW1 to carry a torpedo? If no one gives the answer in a few days I will tell. I bought a new(to me) book on WW1 planes and it has lots of planes I never heard of.

dbcisco 05-13-2010 12:24 AM

This question is for the birds, It's crazy. The clock is ticking on this one.
Maybe I'll get kicked out, but if I'm wrong I'm not clueless.:D:D

WWI Ace 05-13-2010 12:28 AM

Was it the Sopwith Torpedo Dive Bomber? Ha ha!!! Hope you swallowed that one without choking!!! Steve

degreen60 05-13-2010 12:47 AM

Me thinks dbcisco knows the answer. If you Goodle for the answer you cheat.

dbcisco 05-13-2010 01:02 AM

Google isn't as good as having Osperey and Profiles (etc.) collections.

50+AirYears 05-13-2010 05:01 AM

How about the Sopwith T.1 Cuckoo? Even though it didn't become operational until after the Armistice?

dbcisco 05-13-2010 05:42 AM

OK, I used google to find this tidbit:
"The first effective use of this technique (airplane launched torpedo) occurred on Aug. 12, 1915, when a British Short Type 184 seaplane sank a Turkish vessel in the Dardanelles."

degreen60 05-13-2010 12:58 PM

I am talking about the Cuckoo. Crews were training with it for 2 missions and dropping training torpedos with it when the war ended. Nice thing about this Sopwith for modeling it does not have the short nose. The only thing on this plane that looks like a Sopwith is the tail. Build one, take it to the flying field and see how many people know what it is. I like planes like this, probably only models are scratch built.

Nice! I had been checking periodically for it for quite a while and had stopped in the last 6 months or so because I kind of gave up. You'll have to let us know how it is.

7car7 05-17-2010 08:31 PM

Cool, it would be nice to be able to see it on a large screen, rather than the computer.

I agree with one of the commentators, fast forward thru the love interest junk, and watch it for the planes - even with their own inaccuracies, it's still fun.

**neons** 05-17-2010 09:27 PM

Go here and watch it on your computer. Or, download it as .avi in DivX fomat. Burn it and watch it on your DivX DVD player on TV. Use the Search engine and get them all. Flyboys, Blue Max. Hell's Angels,All Quiet on the Western Front. Etc Etc. I use the actors names to find them all. Bonanza!!

Looking great Ron. I'd love to build that big, but with my flying skills I'd kill someone! Got to get a video up if you can.

Here is my latest scratch built model. It is a model of a very rare WW1 era flyer that flew out of the dark forest and was thought by both sides to be a secret weapon of the other side. Both side shot them down till there were none left. Only rumers tell that it even exsisted.

Now if you believe that I would like to sell you a bridge but I need to tell a tale to make it a WW1 model to help with my WW1 RC plane habit and be able to show it here. I think my grands will love it.

I found a paper model on the net that I modified into flying model. It is the Nightfury from "How to tame your dragon".

79CJ 05-27-2010 11:21 AM

Hard to tell from the tight cowling, but I'd guess there is a rotary under there, so it's WWI enough. What's it made of, foam?

It has a brushless rotary engine, also it is a biplane, little set of wings is set behing larger set of wings. It is foam. I was making a foam plane a long time ago and did not like the way the fuselage was looking so I layed that fuselage back and made a new one for that plane. To make the dragon I took the old fuselage, turned it upside down, cut place for the wing, added cone tail and a head. It flys like a trainer but it is easy to loose which direction the plane is flying. I guess cause it is all dark blue, but it flys so nice I just let go of all controls and give it throtle. So far it has climbed out over the trees till I gain control again.

7car7 05-27-2010 04:32 PM

That is just ridiculously cool Don! LOVE it. I'm really curious to know how those mini wings half way down the fuse affect the handling.

I can not tell that the mini wings affect the handling. They may help it fly slower by adding wing area. I thought about making them the V tail and making a cloth tail with the back fins on it to just float along behind the fuselage. This is my first V tail so I did not know how far apart I could make the fins. I set them at 90 degrees, I would have liked them better closer to 125 degrees. It needs some up trim so I am thinking about cutting a slot in the aft fuselage(dragon tail) and making a upward bend. That will give the fins more down on the front. Thought it might look better too with the bend in it.

I just hope one of the red necks around here don't shoot it out of the sky. LOL

I been trying to get my oldest son the learn to fly so we can fly together. He say he may just have to learn now so he can fly the Night Fury.

When I did the first test flights the dragon did not have the ear like things on the head or legs on the body. The wings flapped and I was afaird they would break. One wing had bend marks in the foam after the flight and needed straighten. I added bamboo skewers to strenthen the wings. They still flap some. After adding the ears like things on the head I had to add more up trim. I just took it out for another flight and desided to see how it stalls. It almost won't stall, maybe that is because of the mini wings. I give it full up, it climbed some then the angle of climb got less and it just mushed along. I dived a little for speed and give full up, it stalled and barelly dropped the nose and mushed alone again. Next I slowly added up, it just kept flying with more angle till it was mushing along nose high. It maybe a great trainer. I flew it up high, could look away then back, there it was just floating along.

I'm thinking Fokker D.VIII for my next project. I want to use the plans from http://www.theplanpage.com/esp.htm, has anyone used them before? If so, any tips? Are they good to use? If not, I may order Cleveland plans.

I'm thinking 46" wingspan, which will be about 1/7th scale.

Finally got around to flying this past winter build yesterday, scratch built from 200% Sterling plans.

The first throw was one of those "well throw it lightly, to make sure it doesn't climb, stall, crash", throws. It tipped and went into the very tall grass, fortunately with no damage. That's the only thing that saved it though. The next throw, on the video, was a "fly the dang airplane" throw, as the first one should have been. Lesson learned: you either got for it and do something 100%, or don't bother.

I hate to post a build after Bill G, what a nice looking plane, nice work.

Anyway, I've started work on a 46" Fokker D.VIII. I'm not sure whether I want to do full house or just rudder/ alieron control. I'd kind of like a docile high wing monoplane type to just put around and relax on. If so, I'll have to build a little non-scale dihedral in. Time will tell. I've framed up the horizontal stab and the fuse. It is going to be the biggest plane I've built yet, I want to cut down on the days the wind limits my flying.

Yep, I hear that! I'd say that statement pretty much would make up my mind about full house control - keep the stock lack of dihedral, and go with ailerons. They're better in wind. (but my GWS Tiger Moth does do well in the wind).

If you want docile, and relaxing, I'd go full house, and use mixing (rudder moves with ailerons) on your TX. Use exponential too.

Looking forward to seeing your plane, I'd like to do one of these someday too.
