I've been flying one for over a year now. You'll like it!!! It's a good little plane that behaves well if you set control throws according to instructions. If you don't, the little plane can be a handful. There is a review of this plane in Novembers Fly RC magazine. Steve

DRI review
Steve, are you sure about the magazine month? :confused: I am trying to find the article in FLYRC. BTW, the DRI build is progressing nicely. Can anyone tell me how to post pics? I think you use the attachment on the thread reply, but I'm not sure. Keep 'em flying Boys! Martin

Plank or sheet
Neal I'm not sure what I will do. Making planking can be fun and challenging. :) If you wish to make planking the best way I have found is to glue a 1/4 stick to your balsa stripper opposite the blade. This produces a bevel on the cut strips that is easy to wrap around curved surfaces and eases the planking chore. Been using this method for a while. Of course sheeting needs to be done carefully too. I generally wet the sheeting with an ammonia based fluid(use lots of ventilation!) :rolleyes: which makes the balsa bend like rubber. Secure with tape, rubber bands, etc until dry. Martin

Scalercflyer, I've been down the picture posting route, so maybe I can help. You're correct about the "Managing attachments" dialogue under "Go Advanced" for your reply. When you click on the Managing attachments box you get one with five "Browse" slots. Click on browsr and find the file you need. Open it and it will show up as an item jsut below the browse slots. You can do a total of ten, but ittakes two sets of five. The real trick is getting the file size small enough to be accepted. I finally figured out that by going to "Preview" (I am using a Mac) and clicking "Export" I get to choose the format and the quality. I can do it with a slider or by putting a file size in the right box. I then export to my desktop or some other file where I can pick it up under the Mange Attachments/ Browse window. You can also change file size in Adobe Phot shop, but I'm not up to speed on that.

I haven't heard anybody mention this resources for the Tripehound. 45 absolutely fantasic photos for scale detailing.

Sorry for the delay ... It flies real nice with a feigao 120 4100 slipped into the gearbox. I really enjoy flying it in real calm weather. It is a Parkflyer so you have to remember thats how it was designed. Turn down the throws on the rudder or you'll experience a death spiral without too much trouble ;) Learned that the scarey way LOL It was really easy to build and I enjoyed painting it up. It flew straight off with no problems. Flying indoors is a challenge to me as mine has a little pace on it so I have to keep the speed down and nose up as I only have a small indoor area to work with. It can fly faster but the walls come at you faster too! It always draws attention when I am out in the field and gets compliments. I would go for the plan version and cut it out yourself as there is nothing hard about cutting out any of the parts except the cowl because its smooth and plastic and made for you already and the wings have the undercam in them too. :) |

Well, here's the next to the last batch of photos of my Dr.1 build.
1: brass cottter pins used for bracing wire lugs 2: baby stroller wheels. One on right covered with Ultracoat. I poked a hole in the axle area and did not iron down the center rim until all the wrinkles were out. Looks pretty scale to me! 3. parts to make scale like hub and adapt stroller wheels to plane axle diameter. Wheel collar set screw passes thru inner axle spacer and tightens directly on plane's axle. 4. Hub. I need smaller washers and cotters. but this gave me proof of concept. 5. 3/4 front view. color registratin is poor. Actual color is ultracoat bright red. 6: side view 7. top view Weight minus power pack and aileron servos, machine guns, pilot 4.75 lbs WWI ace: see how close you came? Walt |

Walt PS anybody got a trick for building Spandaus? I keep looking for some kind of expanded or perforated material, but haven't come across anything yet and I don't know when the guy who bought out Williams Bros will actually be up and running. WT PPS saw a pair of the new DuBro 5" WWI wheels $37.00 !!!!!!! |

Martin. In the triplane you are building I have the same motor-gearbox combo as Nitrocharged. For the little tripe I'm getting from Aerodrome I plan to use my Eflite Park 370 outrunner that weighs 1.5ozs. Should work fine and give plenty of power. The weight will probably be okay because we all know how easy it is for tripes to get tail heavy. I would rather have the extra weight making power instead of just hanging there as dead weight. Know what I mean. I'll use my Castle Creations Phoenix 10 ESC. It works great and weighs next to nothing! For a battery I'll probably use my TP 2-cell 830mah lipoly unless I need more power. Then I'll step up to a 3-cell. Steve.

Rhonas, sory I missed your post. Power for my Dr.1 is an Astro 40G (cobalt)
on 20 P3000 NiMh. If my day works out as planned I'll be building the pack today and have some photos later on. Esc is an Astro 204D. Prop will probably be a 14/10 (scale diameter) WWI Ace: thanks for the lead on the Spandaus. They do look good. Problem is my tripe is 1/6 scale and the closest they have is 1/8. I think they'll be too small. Scalerdflyer; did you check out the Tripehound link I posted? I had so much fun building the Dr.1 that I think I'lll start on the TH next. Walt |
you guys make me want to get busy and redraw my plans of the 61" 1919 Fokker, C1, 2 passenger model. mine was complete ready for motor installation, but Hurricane Katrina took all of the models , plans along with the house and 3 shops. now getting back in business in new location. had posted fotos on RCU, Vintage, but can't find them. just dumb thumbs, computor wise. dick stamm

no flight yet. Been very busy with work. All conrols now functional and template for power pack laid out (one 12 cell and one 8cell in semi-circle) should complete the pack Wednesday, then it'll be a waiot for weather which doesn't look good for at least a week. Walt |

Martin, latest photos are in Post #374. Next set will be of building the power pack and installation. I'm still trying to solve the spandau problem and don't have a pilot (too cheap to spend the money for pre-painted and no Williams Bros available).

here's a batch of photos on building the custom battery pack for my Dr.1. A quick finger check indicates that the balance is very close.
1. tinning the brass connector straps 2. tinning the cells 3. using cowl as jig, bottom straps 4. top straps 5. test fit of completed pack 6. pack with rubber band restraints (I CAN do a neater job!) 7. pack with cowl in place. Once I add 4 dummy cylinders you won't be able to see much of it. Next photos:building dummy cylinders and (maybe) Spandaus Walt |
