Well the GP Electrifly Tiggy has been retired.

To replace it, I have have an RAF S.E.5.a scratchbuilt foamie in the drawing stages. I am using an existing set of plans (from Tony65x55 on RCG) which I am modifying using photos of the real plane to add scale details. I also intend on making it a bit larger... 40" WS.

My biggest dilemma right now is whether to keep the undercambered wing (formed from a single thickness of foam) or doing something more adventurous...

Cut a scale RAF15 airfoil from foam with my hotwire jig.

I also intend on painting it with Canadian RCAF (or is it RFC? I'm not good at this history stuff) colours and markings. I've seen renderings of Billy Bishop's SE5a, this could be a possibility for something more 'distinctive':

Will this help. It is Insignia of squadron No. 1 of Canadian Air Force WW1.

Thanks degreen60! That gives me more to work on... ;)

That blue with the maple leaf would be a great scheme to do, look forward to seeing that. I noticed the photo posted has the rounded style radiator like what my SE5 has on it. You don't see those as often. They look similar to a Bentley Car's radiator.

I'm guessing since you have a foam cutter, you probably know more than I do, but I'd think if you did a cut foam wing, you'd need some sort of a spar to go it it. Seems a scale thin profile wing in 40 inch length could be quite fragile. Would love to see it done though.

Yeah, I'm going to use that rad style.

Yup, I have a foam cutter.

The wing has a span of 17-3/4" from the cabanes to the wingtip and a chord of 7". The RAF15 airfoil has a max thickness of 0.43" and an average of 0.35". Based on experience, it definitely needs a spar. Flying wires alone won't be enough. I am also toying with glassing the entire wing. I've done this on other builds and it makes the foam very stiff. The FG weave kinda simulates canvas too.

Hmm, I need a vintage looking wood prop now...

I have my Sopwith refinished. I do not know if the plane had birds painted on both sides. I put birds on both sides of the model.

Degreen,
Another great job of finishing a nice example of a Sopwith Pup. The pull/pull controls should work nice. I always enjoy looking over your work. You must have a hanger full by now.

I print this file on my laser printer. If you use inkjet it will need to be water proofed. I cut out the cooling jacket and the rectangle together. I roll the rectangle and cooling jacket into a tube and coat the inside with white glue. I cut out the body, wrap over a piece of foam. When I cut the foam I cut a tongue to fit into the cooling tube. The pieces that attach to the body I glue on thin foam before attaching. The barrel is a cotton swab plastic handle. I also have lewis, spandua, and hotchkiss gun files. I had to change the file to jpg for it to load here. If the file is not good enough I can email it in png to anyone who would like to have it. I can also email the other gun files too.

Machine gun

Thanks D! I'll tackle it this weekend when I'm in the mancave. BTW, I owe you a phone call soon. Marty

**neons** 01-18-2011 03:42 PM

I have used a pull/pull system on my now defunct Eindekker and a couple small 3D planes. I used thin magnet wire for winding motors and speakers. The wire never changes tension like a string would with atmospheric conditions and age. On one throw for the servo I used a tiny spring like the type in ball point pens. This always helped hold tension on both the leads and acts as a servo breakage protector. Works real good.

Pull-pull are really easy after you do a few. I make my own horns from plastic. Cut a square then cut a smaller square from that, it will leave an L with equal legs. I put a plastic tube from a cotton swab handle where I want the lines to go through foam. Run a line from control horn through plastic tube to hole on one side of servo arm. Run line from hole around screw(don't loop) that holds servo arm on then to hole on other side of servo arm. Thought plastic tube to other side of control horn. Pull just snug and tie. For elevator you need to run 2 lines, one for each side. Set controls where you want them and tighten the servo arm screw. You may have to add a washer to the screw depending on the size of the head on the screw. You can have split elevator using this method without haveing the 2 sides of the elevator attached to each other.

If the wire is thin enough it makes invisable antenna too. In a couple of the pictures of my Pup you can see the antenna laying on the elevator. Never see it in the air and it is hard to see even when holding the plane in your hand.

The ammo chutes are just the edges of a black foam meat tray cut to fit.

Sent you the file. Now do not pay any attention to TM1497 if he tells you I put a hex on everything I send out. Just send me the plane after it crashes. LOL

I need help. Look what just arrived. I now have 2 WW1 planes in my rebuild barn being worked on. I must be sick, I already have a scratch built Sopwith Tripe but when I learned about this Kavan Sopwith Tripe headed for the trash I just had to save it. Now I need more servoes, receiver, ESC, ETC. Hope my wife's purse is setting unguarded so I can get some money. LOL

I just thought of something D! ;-) Maybe you should ship that wounded bird to me so I can practice fixing it! After all, we don't want you to strain yourself or anything like that, not to mention you having to explain where your wife's funds disappeared to! :p>:) Marty

Degreen60 your pup looks great .

You already know the pup is a favorite of mine

The Pup flys low and slow which I like. It flys the same as my 250 Eflite models. My Sopwith Tripe will fly low and slow but also in wind that is too much for the Pup and Eflites. I am thinking about adding ailerons to the planes without changing anything else just to see if I can then roll them. Hope it does not add too much weight. If I catch the wind just right I can roll a couple of them with rudder. Have not tried to roll the Pup. Will have to get together again and maybe fly the Pups at the sametime.

degreen60 01-21-2011 06:20 PM

4 inches of snow, temp just above zero, no wind, sun out. Put skis on my Eflite N9 Jenny and went flying till the wind came up.

I will have to get pictures of the Pup flying but my wife may say wait till spring. LOL I think warming into the 20s tomorrow, maybe I can talk her in taking some pictures if the wind is light enough.

The bomber is faster than the Pup. Not as easy to fly. I found something I like to use to make bombs for it so should have it ready for a bombing run soon.

Why do I need your address?? You think I might give up a WW1 plane? I know, you just want to keep me hooked. You have any idea how bad I shake just thinking about packing one? Do I need to put a stronger hex on the next pilot I send you? Tell me again what freq you fly on so I can tell my priestess. LOL

TM4197 01-22-2011 02:26 AM

hahahaha...Nice try! Thats why they made freq. hopping!!! been flying the WW2 warbirds when I can....just a need for speed thing right now....Spring time.....I'll break the Biplanes out!!

Guys I need help just got the new e-flight Nieuport and i need the uniform colors for a french pilot. Anyone have any colored drawings they could post or a site ? thanks Doug

Here is a uniform that was common, of course large leather or wool jackets would be worn over it in flight...but this is pretty original...

Cool thank you for the pic i will use that color for starters. Doug

degreen60 01-28-2011 02:01 AM

I understand there was no flying uniform. The pilots wore what ever they wanted to stay warm. I paint my pilots like they are wearing leather coats with fun colar. I then use acrylic black thinned over 50% with water and a couple of drops of liquid soap to coat the pilot. Gives them a dirty look as I am sure the pilots were after flying.
